    Joseph T. Van Dyke, 84, Gaston, a former member of the Washington County Board of Commissioners, died June 2, 1987, at Camelot Care Center in Forest Grove following a long illness.Mr. Van Dyke was born July 17, 1902, in Forest Grove, a son of Walter and Margaret Joosten Van Dyke. On February 16, 1926, he married Theresa Cop in St. Francis Catholic in Roy and they celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year. Mr. Van Dyke received his education at Verboort Grade School and Forest Grove High School. He farmed his entire life and had lived on the same farm in Gaston since 1929. He was an avid lover of Belgium Draft Horses and was well-known in the area for his participation with his horses in the Oregon State Fair, Washington County Fair, Portland Rose Parade, Forest Grove Gay '90 's Parade and Hillsboro Happy Days Parade. He also drove the hay wagon at the Forest Grove Corn Feed. He was a past Washington County Commissioner, a committee member of ASC and a member of Washington County Planning Commission. Mr. Van Dyke was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, a Chartered Member of the Washington County Sheriff's Posse and a Chartered Member of the Oregon Draft Horse Association.

    Survivors include his wife, Theresa Van Dyke, Gaston. Three sons, Alvin Van Dyke, Gaston, Vernon Van Dyke, Forest Grove, and John Van Dyke, Woodbridge, Virginia. Three daughters, Betty Meiwes, Springfield, Beverly Meeuwsen, Forest Grove, and Janice Matias. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, six brothers, George Van Dyke, Clarence Van Dyke and Ralph Van Dyke, all of Forest Grove. Albert Van Dyke, Walla Walla, Wash., Raymond Van Dyke, Gales Creek, and Howard Van Dyke, Cornelius, and six sisters, Minnie Holzmeyer, Forest Grove, Cecilia Duyck, Roy, Christine Sahlfeld, Florence Waibel and Leona Puncochar all of Hillsboro, and Loretta Vanderzanden, Banks.

    George Van Dyke - life long resident, Forest Grove age 87 died January 5, 1991 at his home, of causes related to age. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated this morning, at Visitation Roman Catholic Church in Verboort. Rev. Frank Walsh and the Rev. (retired) James Harris officating. Interment followed at the Visitation Cemetery in Verboort.Mr. Van Dyke was born November 12, 1903 in Verboort, a son of Walter and Margaret (Joosten) Van Dyke. He was educated at Visitation School and on December 28, 1928 he married Ethel Kummer in Forest Grove. Mrs. Van Dyke preceded her husband in death on November 17, 1983. Mr. Van Dyke lived on the family property his entire life. He built a home in 1932 across from the family home and had lived there since. He worked at BirdsEye Cannery for 37 years and retired in 1954 as assistant manager. He was member of Visitation Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

    Survivors include his four sons; Wayne of Mt. Angel, Marion Co. Gene of Forest Grove, James of Rock Creek, Washington Co., David of Chehalis, Washington Co. A daughter; Mrs. Charles (Joanne) Scabery of Portland, Multnomah Co., 19 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers; Clarence of Forest Grove, Ralph of Forest Grove, Howard of Cornelius, Raymond of Gales Creek, Washington Co. and 6 sisters; Minnie Holzmeyer, of Forest Grove, Cecilia Duyck, of Roy, Was. Co. Loretta Vanderzanden of Roy, Was. Co. Christine Sahlfield of Hillsboro, Florence Waibel of Hillsboro, Leona Puncochar of Hillsboro.

    Wilhelmina Mary Holzmeyer

    Wilhelmina Mary “Minnie” Holzmeyer, 101, a resident of the Forest Grove community died Thursday afternoon, January 25, 2007 at her home.

    Recitition of the Holy Rosary will be said at 10:00 AM on Monday January 29, 2007 at the Visitation Catholic Church 4289 NW Visitation Rd. in Verboort. Funeral Mass will follow the Rosary to be held at 10:30 AM at Visitation Catholic Church in Verboort. Burial and Vault interment will take place at Mountain View Cemetery in Forest Grove following the Funeral Mass. Friends and family are invited to a reception following the burial to be held at the Harris Center at Verboort.

    Minnie was born on March 29, 1905 in on the family farm in Verboort, OR. She was the oldest of 14 children born to Walter and Margaret (Joosten) VanDyke. She was raised and received her education in the Verboort community and attended Visitation Catholic Grade School up to the 8th Grade. Minnie did not attend high school. The only high school at that time was in Forest Grove; she had no transportation and was needed at home to help her mother. Following grade school Minnie helped her mother with the growing family and would often help other families as well. She attended many social activities in these early years in her life including; dances, plays, baseball games, and music programs. Minnie went to the beach the first time at the age of 14.

    When she was 16 years she worked at the Ray Mailing Cannery in Hillsboro. Minnie had worked there for 12 years and had worked her way up to “floor Lady” when and retired. Minnie also worked for Martin’s Greenhouse which was a short walk from her parent’s home. It was here she developed her love of flowers ad gardening. In 1933 Minnie and her cousin, Frances VanDyke, took and 4 month vacation (from May to September) to visit relatives in Wisconsin. During this trip they visited California and the World’s Fair in Chicago.

    In October of 1934 when she completed working at the cannery for the season Minnie was asked to help at Casper Holzmeyer’s farm on David Hill were Casper’s wife Joanna was ill with cancer. It was here she met her future husband, Henry; they married on July 9, 1935. Following their marriage they made their home at the Holzmeyer place. They raised prunes and nuts and operated a prune and nut dryer. When Casper died in 1945 they built a new house and continued living and working on the farm.

    Minnie was active in her garden and flower beds. She raised ducks, chickens, and some orphaned pigs. She maintained a busy life and enjoyed going clam digging and trips including several to Wisconsin, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Alaska, Hawaii, and Germany. She enjoyed good health and was very active for her age.

    She is preceded in death by her husband Henry, a son; Carl, parents and eight siblings; Joe, Ted, George, Burt, Raymond, Clarence, Howard VanDyke and Cecelia Duyck

    She is survived by her children and their spouses; Richard and Bea Holzmeyer of Forest Grove, OR. Gilbert and Pat Holzmeyer of Edmonds, WA., Mary Jo and Bob Vandehey of Banks, OR., four sisters; Christine Sahlfeld, Loretta Vanderzanden, Florence Waibel, Leona Punchocar ten grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.

    The family wish donations placed in Minnie’s name to St Anthony Catholic Church; 1660 Elm Street Forest Grove, OR 97116.
