    Gitter, Bernice Naomi


    Bernice Naomi Gitter, age 83, of Appleton, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2009, at Appleton Health Care Center following a long and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 10, 1926, daughter of the late J. Edward and Myrtle (Law) Ellefson. Bernice graduated from Appleton High School class of 1943. On March 22, 1947, Bernice was united in marriage to Clem C. Gitter and together they farmed in Greenville until his death in 1995.

    Bernice is survived by four step-grandchildren: Greg (Karen) Gitter, Appleton; Sheri (Jody) Gorges, New London; Julie Gitter, Neenah; and Amanda (Brian) Nushart, Appleton; a step-daughter-in-law, Sandy Gitter, Appleton; and five step-great-grandchildren. She is further survived by two brothers: Lloyd and Norman Ellefson, both of Appleton; two sisters: Dorothy Papenfus and Myrtie (Russ) Krueger, both of Appleton; in-laws: Lester (Mary) Gitter, Eugene (Helen) Gitter, Lillian Gitter; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

    In addition to her husband Clem, she was preceded in death by a step-son, Terry Gitter; two brothers: Elven (Ruth) Ellefson and Edwin (Geraldine) Ellefson; a sister, Lucille (Herb) Kahler; sisters-in-law: Eva Ellefson and Regina (Gene) Ellefson; and brother-in-law, Gordon Papenfus.

    A funeral service for Bernice will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at Star of Hope Chapel (Highland Memorial Park) with Deacon Dave DeYoung presiding. Interment will be held in Highland Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until the hour of service at the chapel on Wednesday.

    A heartfelt thank you to the staff, Doctors and Nurses of the Oncology Department at Appleton Medical Center, to the staff of Appleton Health Care Center and to the family and friends for their prayers and support. A special thank you to a very devoted niece and nephew David and Darlene Maves.

    Bernice will be remembered for her sewing talent and her ease of conversation. She will be missed by many.

    Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Darlene (David) Maves, Greenville; two sons, Franklin (Fran) Papenfus, Appleton; and Dennis (Kathryn) Papenfus, Neenah; two brothers, Lloyd Ellefson, Appleton; and Norman Ellefson, Appleton; one sister, Myrtie (Russell) Krueger, Appleton; daughter-in-law, Karen Papenfus; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; two sons, Ebben Papenfus and Allen Papenfus; two brothers, Elven Ellefson and Edwin Ellefson; two sisters, Lucille Kahler and Bernice Gitter; four sisters-in-law, Ruth Ellefson, Gerry Ellefson, Eva Ellefson and Gene Ellefson; and two brothers-in-law, Clem Gitter and Herbert Kahler.

    Funeral service will be at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at EMMANUEL UNITED METHODIST CHURCH, 740 East College Ave., Appleton, with the Rev. Mark Geisthardt and the Rev. Lynn K. Kollath co-officiating. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park.

    Russ Krueger, age 87 of Appleton, passed into Jesus' arms on Friday afternoon, December 2, 2016 at ThedaCare Medical Center in Appleton. Russ was born in New London on July 3, 1929, son of the late Karl and Adeline Krueger.

    He graduated from the New London High School in 1947, and on January 3, 1951 married Myrtie Jane Ellefson. Just two days later, he entered the United States Army and was stationed in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan during the Korean War. He was discharged on Christmas Eve, 1952. Many will remember Russ for his many years of employment at AAL (Thrivent). He retired in 1987. Russ was very active with the Americanos Drum and Bugle Corps for many years - he drove the equipment truck, served as chaperone, and did just about anything else Bill Schultz asked him to. In his retirement, Russ stayed very active. He served as president, secretary, and treasurer for AAL Branch 3258 and volunteered for many AAL activities; was a life member of the VFW Post 2778 and had acted as Post Commander, Chaplain, and on the Honor Guard; volunteered as a docent at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center; guided tours at Hearthstone; lead retirement planning workshops for AAL's SMART program; active member at St. Matthew Ev. Lutheran Church, serving as church treasurer and choir member; organized bus tours to Milwaukee's GermanFest; valued member of the AAL Choir and the Valley Lutheran Chorale; and was a familiar face to several local bowling leagues.

    Russ is survived by his loving wife: Myrtie Krueger of Appleton; four children: Gary (Wendy) Krueger of Sharps Chapel, Tennessee; Jim (Ann) Krueger of Appleton; Bruce (Beth) Krueger of Darboy; and Cheryl (Dave) Chase of Greenville. His grandchildren are: Erin (Jeremy) Muraszewski, Joshua (Fabrizia) Krueger, Matthew (Kristy) Bergstrom, Emily (Chris) Thompson, Ben (Meredith) Bergstrom, Katherine Bergstrom, Karmen (Joe) Junemann, Kirby (Megan Dimech) Krueger, Kole Krueger, Justin (Kari) Krueger, Jason Krueger, Lauren Krueger, Kali Schoen, and Joseph Schoen. His step-grandchildren include Dennis (Michelle) McRae, Karey (Damien) Perez, Kristy (Tom) Gaddis, and Dawn (Jonathan) Leemon-Berryhill. There are also 4 great-grandchildren, 10 step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild. Other loved ones include: Bernard (Carol) Krueger of New London, Verlaine Parcher of LaCrosse, Avis Rucks of Oshkosh, David (Linda) Krueger of Swartz Creek, Michigan, Henry Williams of North Lauderdale, Florida, Lloyd Ellefson of Appleton, Norman Ellefson of Appleton, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Russ was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter: Kay E. Bergstrom in 1996; a grandson: Brandon Joel Krueger in 1991; a daughter-in-law: Dawn Krueger in 1994; a sister: Marlene Williams in 1999; and a brother-in-law: Rev. John Parcher in 2011.

    The Christian Funeral Service for Russell will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, December 8, 2016 at ST. MATTHEW EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 129 S. Mason Street in Appleton, with Rev. Thomas Mielke officiating. Full military honors will follow the worship service and entombment will take place at Highland Memorial Park. Family and friends are invited to gather at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior Street in Appleton on Wednesday from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM, and again at the church on Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until the hour of the service. Memorial funds in Russell's name are being established at St. Matthew Lutheran Church and Fox Valley Lutheran High School.
