    Friday, February 22, 1918
Frederick Balgie, an old and highly respected pioneer of Calumet County, who had been confined to his bed for some months past through the infirmities of old age, passed peacefully away Thursday morning, February 21, 1918, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. M.A. (Ida) Raught of this city at the age of 82 years 2 months and 21 days.
Frederick Balgie was born in Pommern, Germany, in 1836 and while in the employ of a Reverand Mr. Sontag, a Lutheran minister in Pommern became acquainted with Miss. Caroline Liedecker who was also connected with the ministers household. The young people were united in marriage in 1859 by Rev. Sontag and remained with him seven years after their marriage, receiving respectively the salaries of $20 and $10 a year for there services. Yet out of this meager amount they were able by thrift, prudence and care to save sufficient money to pay there Passage from Germany to this country, landing in New York in 1866. They came west and rented a farm in Waukesha County where they lived for 11 years. Through unremitting industry and frugality they accumulated money enough to purchase a tract of thickly covered timber land in Calumet County in the town of Woodville, next to the old Beach Homestead on the early Military Road. Here they encountered and over came the hardships of pioneer farming, in due time clearing the ground and erecting in place of the original log hut a comfortable home, developing what became under their careful management one of the finest and most productive farms in that section of the state.
In 1907 after 30 years of active life the aged couple placed the management of the farm in the hands of their son Edward and lived in an adjoining apartment, both to leave the place into which they had placed their life-energy and had spent the best years of their lives.
Mrs. Balgie died suddenly in November 1914, since which time her husband lived with his children, coming to Kaukauna last April where he has resided with his daughter, Mrs. M.A. Raught and enjoyed her faithful ministrations. Frederick Balgie was a fine type of the pioneers who made Wisconsin one of the foremost states in the union, quiet reserved and unassuming, unafraid of toil and undaunted by obstacles-men of sterling worth and sturdy character.
There survive him eight of his eleven children----four daughters and four sons: Mrs. William (Augusta) Retzlaff, Sherwood; Mrs. Phil (Anna) Weifenbach, Appleton; Mrs. Albert (Minnie) Luckow and Mrs. M.A. (Ida) Raught, Frank, William, Fred of Kaukauna and Edward who is living on the old homestead.
The body will lie at the home of Mr. and Mrs M.A. Raught until Sunday. There will be a short service at 12 o'clock from the home and from there to the Evag. Lutheran Church at Woodville where the customary services will take place, conducted by the Rev. John Reischell, the deceased having been a regular attendant at this church for about 40 years. Interment will be in the family lot at the parish cemetery.
