Charles Friar, aged 30 years, died Tuesday afternoon at five o'clock at his home on Depot street after a long illness.

Mr. Friar had been employed several years by the Chicago and Northwestern Railway company as a boiler maker until about 18 months ago when his condition became such that he laid off. Last April he purchased the grocery stock of Charles Ristau at the corner of Draper and Depot streets, which business he was able to oversee until a month ago when he was taken more seriously ill and kept his rooms until death came.

    Dahlin, Mark J.

Mark J. Dahlin, 83, Kaukauna, crossed the Rainbow Bridge to begin his life in Heaven on Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at home with his family at his side. The tenth child of Mary Louise Frigo Dahlin and Carl Henry Dahlin, Mark was born on Dec. 6, 1926, in Ironwood, Mich. Mark was united in marriage to Anita Carol Erspamer on Sept. 25, 1954, in Hurley, Wis., sharing nearly 40 years of marriage. She preceded him in death on Aug. 9, 1994.

Mark took pleasure in the scenic route and never missed an opportunity to take a shortcut while traveling, though more often than not the shortcut was not always the most direct route. A member of the Class of 1942, Mark graduated from Luther Wright High School in Ironwood, and later earned a degree from Gogebic Community College in Bessemer on June 7, 1956.

A proud American, PVT 2 (95th AAA Gun Battalion) Dahlin served his country in the Korean War, stationed in Germany (1951-52). With an adventurous soul and a penchant for fun, Mark was an accomplished ski jumper, placing as runner-up in the 90 M Slide Army Ski Jumping Championships in Garmisch, Germany, 1952.

Mark was employed as a Switchman by the Chicago & North Western Railroad for 40 years until his retirement on Dec. 21, 1988, never complaining about the wrath of Mother Nature or Old Man Winter.

Mark is survived by three children, Joellyn (Frank J. Walker) Dahlin, Fond du Lac; Peggy Dahlin, Kaukauna; Mark P. Dahlin (Jaime Lopez), Kaukauna; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Rose Dahlin; special nephew, David W. (Susan) Dahlin and children, Lauren and Marc; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Mark's granddogs, Two Spot, Gucci, Annie, Lucy and Ethel, held a very special place in his heart.

In addition to his parents and his beloved wife, Mark was preceded in death by his siblings, Thomas, Grace, Bernice, Virginia, Artis, Howard, Carl Henry, Gene, Mary Louise; and dear daughter-in-law, Kathryn Coonen Dahlin.

The Mass of Christian Burial in the celebration of Mark's life will be at 12 Noon on Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH at ST. ALOYSIUS SITE, 2401 Main Ave., Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. The family will greet friends directly at church on Monday from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. Internment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna. Complete Military Rites will be served by Post 3319 immediately following the service at church.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Mark's name will be established.

The Boettcher Family Funeral Home, Kaukauna, is assisting the family. 920-766-2099.

The family extends its deep appreciation and gratitude to ThedaCare at Home Hospice and Dr. Bruce Danz for the compassionate care of Mark, allowing him to leave this Earth on his terms with dignity and on the wings of love.
