    John Hilgers, a well known citizen of Colby, passed away Monday evening, Nov. 18th, at 7:50 P.M., complications of ailments being the cause of his death. He had been ill four weeks. Funeral services will be held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Friday afternoon, Nov. 22, at 2:00 P.M., Rev. H. Lee officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby cemetery.
    Mr. Hilgers was born in Racine, Wisconsin, on February 12th, 1861, thus reaching the age of 79 years, 10 months and six days. He was married to Kathryn Jonen at Kaukauna, Wisconsin, May 8th, 1888, to which union two children were born. Mr. and Mrs. Hilgers came to Colby in 1890.
    From 1900 to 1912, Mr. Hilgers worked as salesman for the Gaar-Scott & Co., selling threshing machines and farm machinery. In the early days he operated a threshing machine, working for most of the farmers in this territory. He also operated a well drilling machine from the early days until the present time of his death. He bought a farm in Montana in 1918 which he operated for several years. He was also supervisor of the first ward of the city of Colby for a number of years. He was a man of honest and strong convictions and had the habit of weighting things in the balance of reason, discarding what to him was not right and just. He was a good citizen, a good husband and father and had many friends who are sorry to learn of his departure to the distant shore.
    He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. O. W. Sturner of Colby. One son, Matthew, died Nov. 16th. 1924.
    He is also survived by two brothers, Peter Hilgers and Joe Hilgers, of Fort Worth, Texas, four sisters, Anna Buckley of Forth Worth, Stene Fowler of Fort Worth, Katie Neuman of Fort Worth, Margaret Van Vorst of Appleton and a half sister and half brother, Rose Gross and Ed. Gross of Fort Worth.

    Funeral services for John Hilgers, whose death was reported last week, were held on Friday afternoon at the Lulloff Funeral Home, Rev. H. Lee officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were Angus Lamont, Fred Zassenhaus, Otto Rannow, R. E. Baum, Fred Dix and Henry Forbish.
    Out of town people here for the funeral were Mrs. Lylle Degenhardt of Eau Claire, Mrs. Clemence Norwatazky and daughter, Isabelle, of Appleton, Mrs. Jake Hank and daughter and Mrs. Herman Van Vorst of Kaukauna and Mrs. Frank Fisher of Darboy, Wisconsin.

    She was born May 27, 1925 in Harrison, WI, daughter of the late Herman & Mary (Zolpriester) Thon.

    In February of 1947, she married Norman Parizek whom she met in the ship yards of Sturgeon Bay. Because of Norman's job on the Rail Road, the couple moved from Independence, WI to Wisconsin Rapids, and then to Green Bay. In later years, they built a hobby farm in DePere where they resided. Marian loved to cook and tended to a big garden.

    Survivors include her daughter: Carol (David) Mueller of Hilbert; a grandson: Scott (Michelle) Mueller and their sons, Charles, Henry and Elijah, of Waunakee, WI; a grandson: Dale (Kelley) Mueller and their daughter Elliana with another arriving in June; a brother: Robert Thon; a brother-in-law: Bruce (Ivy) Parizek; and a sister-in-law: Candace Cvancara. Marian is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; 5 sisters: twin sister, Marilyne McConnell, Georgiana Rochon, Florence Hruska, Gladys Clavers, Bernice Carducci; and her brother: Kennith Thon.

    Funeral service will be at 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home from 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013.

Norman Emil Parizek

  • Note: Norman Emil Parizek, 84, De Pere, passed away on Thursday, July 9, 2010, at the Chilton Care Center. He was born June 4, 1926, in Eureka Township, N.D., son of Emil (Amos) Parizek and Oste Rose Holman. He was baptized on March 12, 1927, and confirmed in the Norwegian Lutheran Church on Nov. 19, 1939. Norman completed his first years of schooling in North Dakota before moving to the Green Bay, Wis., area in the early 1940s.

    At the age of 17, he began working for L.D. Smith Shipyards in Sturgeon Bay, as a "Shipfitters Helper," where he met his future wife, Marian Thon (Kaukauna, Wis.). Norman entered the United States Navy during World War II on July 27, 1944, serving on the USS Frost as a Coxswain USNR. He was honorably discharged on July 27, 1946, after completing several successful campaigns in the Pacific and Asiatic waters.

    After the war, Norman began his career on the Green Bay and Western Railroad. He was united in marriage to Marian on Feb. 27, 1947. Due to his line of work, the family resided throughout Wisconsin, including Independence, Wisconsin Rapids and Green Bay. In 1976, they built their final home and hobby farm in rural De Pere/Oneida.

    Norman retired from the railroad in 1987, after 40 years of service. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family, fishing and hunting, raising cows and chickens, gardening, and taking long rides throughout the countryside with his dogs.

    He will be sadly missed by wife, Marian; his daughter, Carol (David) Mueller, Hilbert, Wis.; grandson, Scott (Michelle) Mueller and their sons, Charles, Henry and Elijah, Waunakee, Wis.; grandson, Dale (Kelley) Mueller and their daughter, Elliana, Hilbert, Wis. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce (Ivy) Parizek, Horseshoe Bay, Texas; sister, Candace Cvancara, Aurora, Colo.; brother-in-law, Robert Thon, Kaukauna; and many nieces and nephews.

    Norman was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elvina Van Rens.

    Funeral Services will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at Wieting Family Funeral Home from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, 2010.

    Thon, Steven J.


    Steven J. Thon, 93, Kaukauna, passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 19, 2010. He was born Dec. 15, 1916, in the Town of Harrison, the son of the late Herman and Mary (Zollpriester) Thon. At the age of 18 Steve lost his father, he ran the family farm to support his mother and his seven younger siblings and continued farming until his retirement in 1982. Steve was a kind and gentle person, in retirement Steve enjoyed working on small engines, cutting wood, shaking dice, taking drives and helping out at St. Vincent DePaul.

    Steve is survived by his brother: Robert Thon, Kaukauna, with whom he lived with; his sister and brother-in-law Marian (Norman) Parizek, Chilton; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

    Steve is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Mary; sisters, Georgia (Henry -James) Meyerhofer-Rochon; Florence (John) Hruska; Bernice (Raymond) Carducci; Marilyne (Leslie) McConnell and Gladys (Francis) Clavers; brother Kenneth (Betty) Thon.

Robert worked his entire career at Combined Locks Paper Mill, until his retirement in 1988. Robert enjoyed time with his brother Steve, hunting and taking drives.

    Robert is survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
