Henricus VanderWijst

M, b. July 18, 1789, d. before 1869

Parents

Family: Deliana Vandervoort (b. April 28, 1794, d. March 27, 1844)

Biography

  • Birth: Henricus VanderWijst was born on July 18, 1789 in Uden, Noord Brabant, Netherlands.
  • Marriage: He and Deliana Vandervoort were married on March 11, 1823 in Uden, Noord Brabant, Netherlands.
  • Death: Henricus VanderWijst died before 1869 in Ohio.
  • Note: He is listed as a workman, a farmer, a shopkeeper and an innkeeper. He also served in the army for five years in the 23rd Infantry Regiment according to his marriage record (1823). His wife's first child was born a month after his parents' marriage. A description (1825) says he had brown hair and blue eyes. The records in Uden have him "signing out" to seek his fortune in North America at the age of 64 with his two children Johannes and Thomas in March 1853. We have uncovered no further record of him on either side of the Atlantic after that date, except that he appears to be deceased by the time of his son Thomas' wedding in 1869.
RESEARCH CAVEAT: We are certain that Hendrikus van der WIJST (1789-1853+) is the father of Thomas van der WIJST (1830-1907) because Thomas returned across the Atlantic in 1868 to marry in the Uden records, and the same wife appears in American records after that date. The theory that Arnold van der WYST (d.1898), Albert VANDERWYST (d.1882) and John VANDERWYST (d.1906) of Cuyahoga Co. (Cleveland) Ohio are the same people as Arnoldus (b.1824), Albertus (b.1825) and Johannes (b.1826) is only an educated guess based on the following facts: (1) There is no record of Arnoldus or Albertus dying or marrying in Uden, suggesting they also left (possibly for America) (2) The three brothers in question and Thomas appear to be the only Vanderwysts to settle in Cuyahoga Co. Ohio, all of them appearing there in the 1860s and remaining until their deaths. This is behavior befitting four brothers in a new country. (3) Arnold, John and Thomas all swore in a Cuyahoga county court on the same day (May 29 1862) their intent to become citizens of the United States, and Arnold was the witness on Thomas' Naturalization certificate a year later (Oct 12 1863). (4) John and Albert were both coopers (barrel makers) in Cleveland, and Thomas, although listed as a laborer, lived just down the street from one of the largest cooperages in the city. (5) Albert, John and Thomas all lived within a very short distance of each other on the Near West Side (Cleveland), with Albert and Thomas both being buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery in that area (St. Mary's). (6) John's stated age in his Will corresponds exactly to that of Johannes (b.1826), Arnold's tombstone has him born the same year as Arnoldus (b.1824), and Albert's birth, although it varies in different documents, must fall sometime between 1825-1827. (7) Albert's children are named after Albertus' parents in the Dutch tradition (Bernard Henry and Harriet, after Henricus, Ida Adelia after Delianna).
