  • Note: Marie R. Michalkiewicz, age 99 of Appleton passed away on April 14, 2017. Marie was born on April, 11, 1918 in Appleton to the late Edward and Mary (Weiss) Young. On July 19, 1946 she married Joseph P. Michalkiewicz in Dubuque Iowa. Marie loved to care for her grandchildren when they were young. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was a devoted viewer of EWTN. Marie was known for her skills as a baker. She made awesome cinnamon rolls, homemade bisquits, and enjoyed cooking and canning. She was an avid reader and enjoyed reading about her favorite president, Abe Lincoln. She liked playing cards, mending clothes, sewing and created many embroidered dish towels for her family and friends. She also enjoyed her trips with Joe to Washington DC and Niagara Falls.

    She will be sadly missed by her children, Jean Michalkiewicz of Fox Crossing, Joan (fiancé Donald Vyvyan) Stellmacher of Kaukauna, James (Donna) Michalkiewicz of Appleton, Linda Flenz of Appleton and Patrick Michalkiewicz of Chicago, grandchildren, Heather Vyvyan, Lori (Bob) Harmon, Mari (Hans) Nelson, Julie (Kelly) Branner, Joseph (friend Amber) Flenz, Sara (Brian) Oberhart, Jennifer (friend Jason) Flenz, Michael Flenz, Katie (Michael) Wagner, Chad (Tracie) Michalkiewicz, 10 great-grandchildren, 1 sister and several other relatives.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Joseph, grandchild Bonnie Michalkiewicz, son-in-law Dennis Flenz, 9 siblings and many friends.

    There will be a funeral Mass for Marie on Wednesday April 19, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church of Appleton, 312 State Street, at 10:30am. Visitation will be at the church on Wednesday from 9:00am until 10:30am. Burial will be at St. Joseph cemetery in Appleton.     Lawrence G. "Larry" Young, age 84, of Appleton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 surrounded by his family. He was born on May 1, 1920 in Appleton, the son of the late Edward and Mary (Weiss) Young. Larry was a devoted husband and loving father of five daughters. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, card playing, golfing and sharing these activities with family and good friends meant much to him.
    He is survived by four daughters: Margaret "Peggy" (Richard) Wilinski of Freedom, Mary (Woody)Garrow of Winneconne, Chris (Bill) Tarrolly of Mequon, WI, and Jean (Jim) Barkholtz of Kimberly; his grandchildren: Mary (Jim) Van Dehy, Larry (Sally) Smarzinski, Gwen (Ken) Schreiber, John (Tammy) Friestrom, Jennee (James) Olson, Matthew Friestrom, Chris (Soni) Haag, Elizabeth (Dominic) Langteau, Tim Haag, Megan, Lauren, and Kristen Tarroly; Sara Probst and fiance Kirk Bell, Chad Probst and fiancee Lori Griesbach, and Emily Probst and fiance Gary Lewis; his sisters: Catherine Stepanski, Marie Michalkiewicz and Joanne (Art) Santkuyl; his brothers: Cyril (Mary Lou) Young, and Jim Young; and 22 great-grandchildren.
    He was preceded in death by his wife Jean, a daughter Kathy Friestrom, two brothers Edward and Sylvester "Dick"; and three sisters: Rita Brautigam, Leone Arndt and Armella Doro.
    The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted on Friday April 15, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, 312 South State Street in Appleton with the Rev. Michael O'Rourke officiating. Interment will take place at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Appleton. Friends may call at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. A memorial fund is being established.
    The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the love and care that was extended to Larry by the staff of Brewster Village.

    Our beloved dad and grandfather passed away peacefully on Dec. 8th at the age of 91.

    Bob was born Sept. 30th, 1923 in Menasha, the son of the late Edward and Clara (LaFave) Arft.

    He was united in marriage to Armella Young on July 2nd, 1960, having two children, Rob and Mary and sharing 16 years together before her death on May 19th, 1976. He was also married to Dolores Reinders and she preceded him in death on April 23rd, 1996.

    Bob served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was formerly employed at Gladfelter (Bergstrom Paper Company) for 40 years. He loved to garden, build models and travel.

    He will be remembered as a kind, quiet, gentle man who loved spending time with all of his family.

    He will be deeply missed by his son, Rob Arft, Kimberly; daughter, Mary (Dan) Zuleger, two grandchildren, Matthew and Travis Zuleger, Darboy; two sisters, Elizabeth "Betty" Arft, Appleton; Pat Kosiorek, Menasha and sisters-in-law, Joan Arft, Neenah; Vonnie Arft, Kimberly and many nieces and nephews.

    Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Court; brothers, Donald and Jack Arft; and his brothers-in-law Eugene Court and Ben Kosiorek.

    Funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13th at ST. THOMAS MORE PARISH, 1810 N. McDonald Street, Appleton. The visitation will be held at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. If desired, memorials to the are appreciated.

  • Note: Mary Lou Young (nee Spoerl), age 84, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 9th, 2012 at home. She was born in Appleton, Wisconsin on July 14th, 1927, to Mabel and George Spoerl, the fifth of six children. Mary Lou attended St. Joseph Elementary School and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Menasha. After high school she was employed as a telephone operator and at the bobby pin factory. When her children were grown, Mary Lou was employed at Shopko in the fabric department where she shared her love and knowledge of sewing for 25 years.

    Mary Lou married Cyril Young on October 25th, 1947. They made their home in the house that he built on Sharon Street in Appleton. Mary Lou and Cy, along with their family, also spent many happy years at their summer home on Lake Winnebago. Mary Lou had a special way of making everyone feel welcome with her open door policy, and large multi-generational parties were a regular occurrence. She will be remembered for her excellent cooking, pie making, and Friday night fish fries at the lake. She took great pleasure in sewing and many of her family and friends were blessed by her seamstress skills. She enjoyed friendships with many neighbors over the years. Mary Lou especially enjoyed spending time with her sister-in-law, Jean Young, who preceded her in death. She and Jean raised their families together, cooked and sewed together, and were known to enjoy a few manhattans together when the work was done. Mary Lou also enjoyed many of these same things with her close friend Marge Holcomb.

    Mary Lou will be greatly missed by her five children: Mark (Joann) of Appleton; Lisa (Robert) Young-Borkowski of Hartland, WI; Scott (Sue) of Zimmerman, MN; Sara Young-Spoerl of Appleton; Beth (Ted) Young-VerKuilen of Menasha; her ten grandchildren: Kevin (Rhonda) Young; Becky (Jay) McNally; Laura, Sam, and Anthony Spoerl; Ethan, Elliott, and Anna VerKuilen; Christopher Oelkers; Jackie (Zach) Norling; and her eight great grandchildren: Joselyn Wurth, Gianna and Sophia Young; Emma, C.J. and Ozzy Oelkers; and Luke and Kate Norling.

    Mary Lou is survived by her sister, Barbara (Jerry) Thiel of Appleton: sisters-in-law Marie Michalkiewicz; Joann Santkuyl; and many loving nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husband: Cyril (Bunky) Young, her parents: Mabel and George Spoerl; brothers: Thomas and Vincent Spoerl; and sisters: Mary Spoerl and Bernette Hurley.

    A memorial service celebrating Mary Lou's life will be held Friday, April 13th, 2012, at Fox Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2600 E Philip Ln, Appleton, WI. Visitation will be at 5 pm, service at 6 pm. Fellowship and light meal to follow. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in her name for Theda Care at Home Hospice.

    Mary Lou's family would like to express gratitude to her physicians, especially Jeffery Whiteside and Phil Vogt, who both went above and beyond in providing care to her over the years. The family would also like to thank her caregivers Karen Schnese and Barb Semrow, along with Joe Tessmer, RN, Trisha Vanderwielen, CNA, Duane Brown, and the other staff at Theda Care at Home for their compassionate care of Mary Lou during her illness.

    James O. Young, age 79, of Manawa, passed away at his residence on Thursday, March 25, 2010. He was born on January 11, 1931, in Appleton, son of the late Edward and Mary Young. James graduated from Appleton West High School in 1950. Following high school, he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Following his return from the service, he earned his bachelors degree from Lawrence University, and his master's degree from UW-Oshkosh. James loved to fish.

    He is survived by his children: Janet (Harlan) Linjer, Manawa; David (Kristi) Young, Manawa; Eric Young, Manawa; James Young, Davenport, IA; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild; two sisters: JoAnn (Art) Santkuyl, Little Chute; Marie Michaelwicz, Appleton. He is further survived by brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    His parents and eight siblings preceded him in death.

    It was James' wish that there not be a service.
