    Age 83, passed away at 7:30 p.m. Saturday following a short illness. He was born October 9, 1890 in Milwaukee and was formerly employed with the Chicago Northwestern Railway for 55 years as a telegrapher. He retired 17 years ago. He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church. Survivors are his wife, Odila; a son, Gordon J. of Appleton; a sister, Miss Rose Hawley of Milwaukee; five grandchildren, Thomas G. of Oshkosh, Mrs. Ken (Suzanne) Newberry of Madison, Terry J. and Calvin P. and Colleen all of Appleton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at St. Therese Catholic Church with interment in St. Mary Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin funeral Home from 5 until 9 p.m. on Monday and after 9 a.m. on Tuesday until the hour of service. The rosary will be prayed at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

    Age 59, died unexpectedly Friday morning. He was born January 4, 1916 in Appleton and was formerly employed by Kimberly-Clark Corporation in Neenah, retiring three years ago. He was also the former owner and operator of the Ace Tri-City Stamp Shop. He was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, a member of the Moose Lodge No. 367, and a veteran of World War II, serving four years in the Air Force in Europe. Survivors include his wife, June Maney Hawley; his mother, Mrs. Irving Hawley of Appleton; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Suzanne) Newberry of Sun Praire, Wis., and Miss Colleen Hawley, at home; three sons, Thomas of Appleton, Terry and Kevin, both at home; and a grandson, Sean Thomas. He was preceded in death by his father, Irving in August of 1974; and a daughter, Linda, 21 years ago. The funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church with the Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Trettin Funeral Home after 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday after 2 p.m. A prayer service will be held at the funeral home at 7:30 Sunday evening.

    Funeral services for August Mercks, 83, a long time railroad employee, will be at 11 a.m. today (Tuesday) at Holy Cross Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Kabat officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.

    Mr. Mercks, a resident of this city for the last 55 years, died Friday, November 30, at the Kaukauna Community Hospital. He had formerly resided at 924 Taft Street.

    He was born April 8, 1896, in Belgium, and had worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Loyal Star of Railroads.

    Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary) Desotell and Mrs. Eugene (Margaret) Ashauer, both of Kaukauna; two sons, Frank of Kaukauna, and John of Mc Farland, Wis.; a brother, Frank of New Jersey; four sisters, Mrs. Wesley (Louise) Guilfole of Kaukauna, Mrs. Leone Stammers of De Pere, Mrs. Peter ("Clem") Wachtendonck of Seymour, and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Maes of New Jersey; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers; and two sisters.

    The Fargo Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

    Desotell, Mary Louise


    Mary Louise Desotell, age 84, of Kaukauna, passed away on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at Appleton Health Care Center with her family at her side. Mary was born on December 14, 1924, in Kaukauna, to the late August and Gabriel (Vermeulen) Merckx. She married Donald Desotell on October 1, 1949, in Kaukauna he preceded her in death on February 7, 1996. Mary was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She enjoyed bingo, card playing and especially the time she spent with her grandchildren.

    Survivors include her son, Dan (Sue) Desotell, Freedom; her daughter, Karen (Scott) Funk, Kaukauna; her grandchildren: Lisa (Vince) Oliver, Amy Butler, and Becky Desotell; her great-grandchildren, Brandon Desotell, Jayden Butler, Tianna and Makenna Oliver; her sister, Muggy (Eugene) Ashauer, Kaukauna; her brother, Frank (Laura) Merckx, Kaukauna, and her sister-in-law, Evelyn Merckx, McFarland, Wisconsin.

    She was preceded in death by her brother, John Merckx.

    A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 19, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. A memorial has been established in her name.
