Preceded in death 37 years ago by her husband and the love of her life, Bob; parents Severe and Mame (Joyce) Savageau, and six brothers and sisters.

Mom was born April 21, 1924 in De Pere, Wis. Her widowed mother, Mamie Joyce Savageau, raised a large, young family during the very difficult depression years. Mamie's work ethic, honesty, dignity and Irish sense of humor shaped mom. Mom married Bob Clancy of Green Bay in 1948. They raised their children in Wis., Penn. and Minn., but never lost their Green Bay roots. She and Dad passed on their love of the Packers and sports and attended as many of their kid's activities as possible. In later years, Mom continued to attend many of her grandchildren's school and athletic activities. She traveled to visit her daughters and enjoyed several Las Vegas trips with her children. Years ago Mom made a pilgrimage to the holy land - Ireland - with her two daughters to sample an authentic pint. A woman of deep faith and a daily mass-goer all her life, she was known for her smile, sharp mind, quick wit and loving, gracious and engaging manner. People loved being around her. Mom was never shy to inspire and remind us what was important in this world, and it always involved faith, honesty and striving to lead the best lives we could. That will be her legacy. A heartfelt thank you to all her caregivers, including Connie and Leslie for their care and compassion, and Eva, whose tender care for mom in her last days at home was a source of great comfort to Mom and us. While we will miss you mom, you leave us with a life of beautiful memories. Now you see the face of God and of Dad, reunited after so many years. It is what you prayed for everyday. For this, we are so grateful.

Stephen J Joyce

M, b. February 15, 1815, d. February 19, 1896

Parents

Family: Elizabeth Duffy (b. July 10, 1826, d. February 2, 1897)

Biography

  • Birth: Stephen J Joyce was born on February 15, 1815 in Garroman, County Galway, Ireland.
  • Marriage: He and Elizabeth Duffy were married on April 20, 1851 in Lynn, Essex Co, Massachusetts.
  • Death: Stephen J Joyce died on February 19, 1896, at age 81, in Town of Rockland, Brown Co, Wisconsin.
  • Burial: He was buried in Allouez Catholic Cemetery, Green Bay, Brown Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Stephen J. Joyce was born in 1815 in County Galway, Ireland where he was reared and educated. The Joyce family owned and operated a marble company in Ireland. Stephen was allergic to marble dust so he was not able to join the family business. He left Ireland in 1847 at the age of 32 and came to Rockland, Brown County, Wisconsin in 1851 from County Galway, Ireland via Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Boston, Massachusetts where in 1851 he was married to Elizabeth Duffy. Stephen was advised by a Boston doctor to go to Wisconsin where the tall pines are so that he could get relief from asthma. At the time, the U.S. Federal Government gave the State of Wisconsin Section 16 of each township in the state. These sections were to be sold and the monies used to start the University of Wisconsin. On January 27, 1855, Stephen Joyce bought 40 acres in Section 16 in the Town of Rockland, Wisconsin. On April 1, 1856, he bought an additional 40 acres. The deeds for this land purchased are in the Historical Museum in DePere, Wisconsin. Stephen had to cut down trees and build a cabin. Woodsmen passing through at the time took time to make doors for the cabin because of animals in the woods. Stephen had temporarily hung blankets over the doors to keep out the cold. Stephen and Elizabeth had 7 sons and 4 daughters. Two of the sons graduated from the University of Wisconsin. Stephen and Elizabeth Joyce`s graves are in the old section of Allouez Cemetery. Records show that the graves were moved there as the old cemetery was near the east end of the Mason Street bridge. (Story and research provided by Marcella Joyce Anderson for the James Joyce family.)
