  • Note: Fred J. Selig, age 87, of Appleton died peacefully Wednesday, September 7, 2011. Fred was born September 12, 1923 in Appleton, to Fred and Carolyn (Vanendenbergen) Selig. Fred graduated from the Tech in 1942. After spending 3 ? years in the Coast Guard, serving in the Pacific Theater, he married, Magna E. Dunn on October 8, 1945 in Sault Ste Marie, Canada. The happy couple then moved to Appleton. Fred then worked construction and for the Neenah foundry over the next 7 years.

    He was a long standing member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. October 1st, 1952 Fred joined the Appleton Fire Department. In February, 1961 he was appointed Driver and 4 years later he became a Captain, in charge of training. Fred was appointed Fire Chief in 1975 and was instrumental in watching the department grow from 40 men in 3 stations to 94 men in 4 stations, stating "Without the men, without their efforts, and without their cooperation, the man who sits behind this desk is nothing". At 61, Fred walked out of Fire Station No. 1 with the satisfaction of a job well done.

    After his retirement, Fred spent time as a courtesy driver for Cloud Buick/Bergstrom. He also enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and working his yard.

    Fred will be missed sadly by his wife, Magna of 65 years, his three children; Gary (Jan) Selig, Gail (Rick) Jones, and Gaye, (Mike) Tassoul. His seven grandchildren; Jill Fickel, (Corey), Appleton, Greg, (Pam) Selig, Appleton; Tami (Corey) Shannon, Houston, Texas; Troy (Alissa) Beyer, Appleton, Shane (Shane) Tassoul, Appleton; Shannon, (Robbie) Dilworth, Naples, Florida; and Shawna Tassoul, (Craig); Neenah. Fred is also survived by his 13 great-grandchildren; Tanner, Jordan, Justin; Megan, Brandon, (Whitney) Phoenyx and Xander , Jacek and Tycen; Cassidy and Zachary; Sophia and Ryker; 2 brothers; Vernon, (Millie); Dick, (Connie); 2 sisters; Betty Koehn and Marge Lausman as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

    Fred was preceded in death by his parents; Carolyn and Fred; a son, Todd; and 3 brothers; Kenneth, Eugene and Jack.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton. Family and friends may visit at Valley Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. and there will also be a visitation on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the mass. Military honors and Fire Dept. honors will be held at the church on Tuesday. A memorial fund is being established for the American Heart Association .

    Fred's family expresses their sincerest thank you to the staff of both the Theda Care Hospice, and The Renaissance for their exceptional care and support and also to the staff of Valley Funeral Home for their compassion and professionalism.

    Magna Selig was called to her heavenly father on September 16, 2016 with her family by her side. Magna was born to Peter J. and Clarissa (Ladouceur) Dunn on March 18, 1924 in Thessalon, Ontario, Canada. She attended Thessalon High School and then moved to Sault Ste. Marie, working for Dr. Smith and then for Alpha Grill where she met and married Fred J. Selig of Appleton, WI on October 8, 1945. She then moved to Appleton where she and Fred settled and together raised their family. He preceded her in death, September 7, 2011. Magna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. She devoted her life to her family. Magna worked for Babe Van Camps in her earlier years. After raising her family, she worked for Kimberly Clark, and H.C. Prange. She enjoyed her many travels with loving husband, Fred, her time with the girls from "Club" and trips to the Casino.

    Magna will be sadly missed by her three children: Gary (Janet) Selig, Appleton; Gail (Rick) Jones, Menasha and Gaye (Mike) Tassoul, Menasha, along with her seven grandchildren: Jill (Corey) Van Dera, Appleton; Gregg (Pam) Selig, Appleton; Tami (Corey) Shannon, Katy, TX; Troy (Alissa) Beyer, Sherwood; Shane (Shane) Tassoul, Appleton; Shannon (Robbie) Dilworth, Naples, FL; Shawna (Craig) Reichelt, Neenah and 12 great grandchildren: Tanner, Justin and Jordon Fickle; Megan Selig, Brandon (Whitney) Cox; Sophia and Ryker Shannon, Jacek and Tycen Beyer; Phoenyx and Xander Tassoul; Cassidy and Zachary Dilworth; Cambria Reichelt, and two great-great grandsons, Drake and Conway Cox.

    Magna is further survived by her sister, Geneva (Dunn) Dewar, brother, Frank (Anne) Dunn, Sault Ste Marie, Canada; brother in law, Dick (Connie) Selig, San Diego, CA, Sisters in law; Mildred, Karen, Lois Selig and Margie Lausman, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many of her friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Clara Dunn, her husband, Fred, a son, Todd Peter, sister, Azilda Dunn, Bothers; John (Laurene), Bill (Ruby), Albert "Bert" (Elaine) Dunn, brothers in law; Vernon, Kenneth, Gene and Jack, sister in law, Betty (Robert) Koehn.

    Funeral services will be held at 11:30am on Thursday, September 22, 2016, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St, Appleton with Fr. Andrew Kurz officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, Appleton, and again, from 10:30am until the time of service on Thursday at the church.

    The family would like to give a special thanks and recognition to the all staff at the Renaissance Assisted Living, Appleton for their special care and attention they all gave to mother, Your kindness will be remembered in our hearts forever.

  • Birth: Myron J Tassoul was born on July 8, 1937 in Algoma, Kewaunee Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: He died on September 21, 2016, at age 79.
  • Note: Myron James "Mike" Tassoul was called to heaven with his family by his side on Wednesday, September 21, 2016.

    Mike was born July 8, 1937 in Algoma, WI, son of the late John B. and Ida (Tombal) Tassoul.

    Mike began his grocer career in 1955 with the local Red Owl store. He managed Red Owl stores throughout the country for the next several years, and in 1971 he moved on to open his first store, Mike's Towne and Country in Appleton where he met and married Gaye A. (Selig) Tassoul on March 20, 1979. Together they expanded their business to six stores throughout the Fox Valley and Clintonville. He retired in 1992 to spend more time with his family, but never really quit working. He spent the remainder of his life investing in various real estate opportunities.

    Mike was a member of St. Bernard Parish for 30 years, and was very active in his local community. He was a member of the Appleton Noon Lion's Club for 45 years during which he climbed the ladder to President. Mike also sponsored Ducks Unlimited and The Rocky Mountain Elks Foundation, and was heavily involved in Goodwill Industries.

    His hobbies included travel, hunting, annual fishing trips to Canada, golfing, and spending his winters in Naples, FL. He was also an avid Green Bay Packer fan, loved the outdoors, boating, yard work, and shopping at Menard's.

    Mike will be missed by his wife, Gaye and his seven children: Kathleen (Mark) Kinderman, Oshkosh, WI; Michael (Kathy) Tassoul, Queens Creek, AZ; Patrick Tassoul, Menasha, WI; Michelle (Ryan) Roth, Chandler, AZ; Shane (Shane) Tassoul, Appleton, WI; Shannon (Robbie) Dilworth, Naples, FL; Shawna (Craig) Reichelt, Neenah, WI. He also enjoyed spending time with his eleven grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 28, 2016, at St. Bernard Parish, 1617 W. Pine St., Appleton with the Rev. Dennis Ryan officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton, and again, from 10:00 a.m. -10:45 a.m. on Wednesday at the church.

    The family would like to give a special thanks and recognition to the all staff at Prairie Home Assisted Living, Menasha, for the special care and attention they all gave to Mike. Your kindness and love will be remembered in our hearts forever.
