    Injuries Prove Fatal to Estimable Resident; Funeral Thursday

    Anton H. Scherer, 75, resident of this city for more than thirty years, passed away about 6:45 o'clock Monday evening in the M. and M. hospital, where he had been a patient for the past seven weeks. He was taken to the hospital after he was seriously injured when struck by an automobile, and had suffered the fracture of both legs, one arm and three ribs.

    The deceased was born in Oconto, August 5th, 1859. He was a millwright and carpenter by trade.

    He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. F.W. Lindsay, 937 Main street, this city and Mrs. Charles Crossman, Hammond, Ind.; one son, Bernard, West Allis; also a brother, John Scherer, DePere, formerly of Marinette, and three sisters, Mrs. Al Whittaker, Mrs. D. D. Keefe, and Miss Etta Scherer, Oconto.

    The deceased was a member of the Holy Name society of Our Lady of Lourdes church.

    Remains were removed to the McLain funeral home and on Wednesday will be taken to the family home, 602 Terrace Avenue.

    Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9 a. m., in Our Lady of Lourdes church. The Very Rev. Dean John R. McGinley will officiate at the requiem mass.

    Interment will be at Forest Home cemetery.

    Jacob H. Scherer, 71, died Monday, Sept. 26, at his home, 210 Scherer Ave., where he was born and raised. He suffered a paralytic stroke eleven weeks ago, never recovering.

    Funeral services were held Wednesday Afternoon at 2 o'clock from St. Joseph's Catholic church with the Rev. Fr. L.C. Becker officiating. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery.

    Pallbearers were John VanGaal, Theodore Meeuwsen, Joseph Keefe, Patrick Nagel, John and Antone Merline.

    Jacob Scherer was born Nov 12, 1861 in Oconto. On Feb. 26, 1900 at St. Joseph's Catholic church he married Edith Kehl. Mr. Scherer was a retired mechanic. For 33 years he was a fireman, served as an alderman for 12 years and was a supervisor for eight years.

    The survivors are the widow; three sisters and two brothers, Mrs. A.E. Whittaker, Mrs. D.T. Keefe and Miss Etta Scherer, all of Oconto; John of Green Bay and Antone of Marinette.

    The out-of-town attendants at the funeral were: Fr. A.M. Keefe, DePere; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kehl, son and daughter, Green Bay; Jack Kehl and Florine Schroder, Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. John Scherer, Antone Scherer, Mrs. F.H. Jaeger, Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Jaeger, Mrs. Frank Lindsay, Mrs. T.J. Sander and son, and Mrs. Wm. Ingram of Marinette; Miss Elizabeth Scherer of Chicago, Joseph Melchoir and son Orton of Walace, Mich.

    Funeral services for Mrs. Lena Whittaker, 77, who died of complications Tuesday at 1:35 p.m. after an illness of two weeks, will be held Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. from the Gagnon Funeral home and at 9:00 a.m. from St. Joseph's church, Rev. M.G. Alt officiating, with burial in the Catholic cemetery.

    Mrs. Whittaker, nee Scherer, was born in Oconto, November 25 [Mar 25], 1864. Her husband, Albert Whittaker, preceded her in death eight years ago. She was a member of St. Joseph's Altar society and of the Lady Foresters.

    She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Drolet, Pensaukee, with whom she had been making her home for the past two months; one son E.H. Whittaker, Duluth; one sister, Mrs. Dennis Keefe, Oconto; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

    ALBERT WHITTAKER, 76

    At 9 o'clock this morning the Rev. Fr. A. Keefe, DePere, conducted funeral services for Albert E. Whittaker, 76, at St. Joseph's Catholic church. Burial was in the Catholic cemetery. The Rev. Keefe is a nephew of Mr. Whittaker.

    Death claimed Mr. Whittaker Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 3 A.M. at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Urban Drolette. He suffered a paralytic stroke three days previous to his death from which he never recovered.

    Albert Whittaker was born Sept. 14, 1857 at Newport, Maine. He has lived in Oconto for 30 years. On May 2, 1886 he took as his bride Lena Scherer, the wedding taking place at St. Joseph's Catholic church of this city.

    Surviving are the widow, one daughter, Mrs. Urban Drolette, city, and one son, Edwin Henry of Duluth, Minn., and five grandchildren.

    Those carrying the casket were Ed. Young, Wm. and A. Merline, Peter McGovern, Theodore Meeawsen and Joseph Keefe.

    OCONTO - Mrs. Mary Margaret Keefe, 88, Oconto resident who has made her home at St. Mary's Home in Oshkosh for nine and a half years, died there Tuesday. Her home in Oconto was located at 513 Washington St.

    She was the former Mary Scherer, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Scherer, pioneer residents of Oconto. Mrs. Keefe was born here May 30, 1868. Her husband, Dennis Keefe, died in 1944.

    Mrs. Keefe was a member of the Altar-Rosary of St. Joseph's church.

    She was the mother of the Rev. Anselm M Keefe, a St. Norbert College administrator, who will officiate at a solemn requiem high mass in St Joseph's church at 10ยท30 a m Thursday.

    Besides Father Keefe, she is survived by a daughter, Miss Barbara Keefe of Oconto.

    The body is at Sheffield funeral home where friends may call from this evening until time for services. A rosary service will be held by the parish and Altar Rosary society at 7 :15 tonight in the mortuary.

  • Note: Mardelle M. Kamke, Kaukauna, age 77, passed away on Monday, August 6, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center. She was born on February 13, 1935, daughter of the late Bernard and Ethel (DeKeuster) Rolf. Mardelle was born and raised in Kaukauna and attended St. Mary's School. On July 3, 1956 she was united in marriage to Raymond Kamke in South Carolina. She had a love for cats, owls, and her baked cinnamon rolls. Most of all, she enjoyed times spent with family, especially her grandchildren.

    Mardelle is survived by her four children: Michael Kamke, Kaukauna, Mark Kamke, South Carolina, Christine (Robert) Zierler, Georgia, and Jeffrey Kamke, Georgia; seven grandchildren: Tracy (James) Hurda, Joshua Kamke (special friend Kayla), Caroline Kamke, David (Tanya) Zierler, Justin Zierler (special friend Katie), Creg (Amanda) Zierler, and Desirea Kamke; six great-grandchildren; two brothers: Barney Rolf and Carl (Henrietta) Rolf; and a sister, Evelyn Quever. She is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers: Bob, Charles, Lee, and Clifford; and a sister, Margaret.

    A Memorial Service for Mardelle will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at BOETTCHER FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 2401 Fieldcrest Dr., Kaukauna. To provide for his family, Ray found a passion for finished carpentry; he was a "natural" at it.

    He is survived by his four children: Michael (Vicki Lynn), Kaukauna, Mark, South Carolina, Christine (Robert) Zierler, Georgia, and Jeffrey, Georgia; seven grandchildren: Tracy (James) Hurda, Joshua Kamke, Caroline Kamke, David (Tanya) Zierler, Justine Zierler, Creg (Amanda) Zierler, and Desirea Kamke; six great-grandchildren; his siblings: Geraldine (Alden) Moeller, Seymour, Darwin (Alice), Appleton, Alvin (Ginny), Kaukauna, and Allen, Hilbert; numerous nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his wife Mardelle in 2012.

    Funeral Services for Ray will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday June 29, 2013 at ST. JOHN EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, N9125 Military Rd., Kaukauna with Pastor Andrew Luehring officiating.
