She is survived by one daughter, Ann Smedley and her husband, Waylan of Fort Smith; one son, John Alexander Eckes of Wilmington, Calif.; two grandchildren, Paul and Tim Wiles; and two great-grandchildren, Emaline and Josa Wiles; one sister and one brother. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Redondo Beach, Calif. Robert John Maas

  • Birth: Robert John Maas was born on September 9, 1928 in Kimberly, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: He died on March 27, 2006, at age 77, in North Carolina.
  • Note: Robert John Maas, 77, of Hendersonville died Monday, March 27, 2006, at Four Seasons Hospice Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.
    He was the husband of Elaine Betty Gustman Maas and son of John C. Maas and Johanna DeWildt Maas.
    He was born Sept. 9, 1928, in Kimberly, Wis. He relocated to Rhinelander, Wis., and began his printing career with Daniels Packaging in 1950. In 1975, he was assigned as the plant manager of Banta Corporation in Mountain Home. He finished his 46-year career with Print Pack Inc. in Mountain Home, retiring in 1996.
    He celebrated his retirement by traveling with his brother in-law, Ernest Gustman Jr., to Alaska by vehicle. The trip was the source of a lifetime of wonderful fishing stories.
    He is survived by his daughter Kathi Rogers of Hendersonville and granddaughter Stephanie; son, Bruce Maas and his wife, Jan, of Shorewood, Wis., and grandchildren Dan, Becky and Michael; son Bryan Maas and his wife, Brenda, of Charlotte, and grandsons, John and Bradley; son Lee Maas and his wife, Beth, of Florida, N.Y., and grandchildren Ryan, Savannah and Jeremy; and daughter Barbara Maas Merrell of Hendersonville and grandsons Matthew and Tyler. He was blessed with 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
    He is also survived by brothers David Maas of Appleton, Wis., and Carlton Maas of Fresno, Calif., and his sister, Margaret Summers of Appleton, Wis.
    A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel. The Rev. Steven Lorimer will officiate. He will be entombed in Shepherd Memorial Park Mausoleum next to his wife of 47 years, Elaine. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Thos. Shepherd & Son Funeral Directors.

  • Death: Bernice Ann Gerrits died on June 14, 2012, at age 89.
  • Note: Mrs. Elmer "Bernice" Leonhard, 89, of Sheboygan passed away at her home accompanied by her devoted daughter on Thursday morning, June 14, 2012.

    Bernice was born on August 3, 1922 in Hollandtown, a daughter to the late Theodore and Petronella (VanVreede) Gerrits. She graduated from Chilton High School in 1941. On August 16, 1941 she was united in marriage to Elmer Leonhard at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Chilton. Elmer preceded her in death on May 8, 1987. Bernice had been employed at Wigwam Mills and St. Nicholas Hospital. Bernice always enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, taking car rides and traveling with her daughter to Door County. Her many interests included crocheting, cooking and baking.

    Bernice was a member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, the Women's Catholic Order of Foresters, Catholic Women's Charity Club and the St. Anne's Christian Women. She had served on the Citizen Advisory Committee under Mayor Schneider.

    Bernice is survived by her daughter, Georgene Leonhard of Sheboygan; a daughter-in-law, Carol Leonhard, of Kiel; a son, Richard (Mary) Leonhard of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren, Richard (Julie) Leonhard, Jodi (Scott) Miller, Todd (Christi) Leonhard, Ryan Leonhard, Aristotle Leonhard and Alezandria Leonhard, all of Sheboygan, Michael (Sandra) Leonhard of West Bend, Robb (Tiffany) Leonhard of Plymouth and Tanya (Robert) Wiesner of Cedar Grove; 14 great-grandchildren, Emma, Estelle, and a new great-granddaughter, Hunter and Logan Leonhard, Jordon and Justin Miller, Joshua and Lindsey Leonhard, Maxwell, Benjamin and Zachary Leonhard, Thomas and Oscar Wiesner; a sister, Evelyn Keller of Appleton; a brother, Donald (Edith) Gerrits of Fond du Lac; sisters-in-law, Marcella Thieleke and Margaret Miennert both of Sheboygan and Helen Ziarnik of Manitowoc and a brother-in-law, Arvin (Renate) Leonhard of Georgia. She is further survived by nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by a son, Gerald "Jerry" Leonhard, a great grandson, Michael Tyler Leonhard, sisters, Ethel Dupler, Hilda Veit and Betty Slater and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 3 p.m., Monday, June 18, 2012 at Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church with Rev. Daniel Lasecki as celebrant. Family and friends may gather at the church, N. 8th and Huron Ave. on Monday from 1 p.m. until the time of Mass at 3 p.m. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

    Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 23 at the Poole Funeral Home, Port
    Washington for Betty J. Slater, of Port Washington, who died Saturday, April 20,
    2002 at St. Mary’s Hospital-Ozaukee, at the age of 77. Reverend Joseph Haas of St.
    Peter of Alcantara Catholic Church, Port Washington, officiated at the ceremony.
    Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Fredonia. Poole Funeral
    Home, Port Washington, assisted the family with arrangements.
    She was born on Dec. 2, 1924 in Hollandtown, Wash., daughter of the late Ted and
    Nell (Van Vreede) Gerrits. In May, 1948 she married Allan E. Slater of Random
    Lake in Dubuque, Iowa.They raised their family in Fredonia before moving to Port
    Washington in 1964.
    Mrs. Slater was a secretary for the former Peiffer Advertising of Port Washington for
    many years. While living in Fredonia she started their first Girl Scout troop and
    remained a leader when she moved to Port Washington. She volunteered in city
    voting polls and with the former Port Washington Mariners Drill Team.
    She is survived by her husband, Allan; daughters Shari (Mike) Lohuis of Medina,
    Ohio, Pam (Bob) Thill of Cedarburg, Alison (Bob) Benter of New Fane; son Ted
    (Theresa Schwartz) Slater of Cudahy; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson;
    sisters Evelyn Keller of Appleton; Ethel Dupler, Hilda (Clarence) Veit, Bernice
    Leonhard, all of Sheboyan; brother Don (Edith) Gerrits of Fond du Lac; other
    relatives and friends.
    She is preceded in death by an infant daughter Marciana and granddaughter
    Heather.
    Memorials to the American Cancer Society or charity of the donor’s choice are
    appreciated.
