    Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Cross Catholic church, Kaukauna, with burial in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Fargo Funeral home, Kaukauna, where the rosary will be said at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
    Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. J. V. Molter, Arlington Heights, Ill., Mrs. W. L. Halpine, Helena, Mont., Mrs. Giles Dunphy, DePere, Mrs. Melvin LaFond, Black Creek, and Mrs. Harold Merkl, Appleton; three sons, John, Little Chute, Simeon, Kentucky, and Orville, Kaukauna; three sisters, Mrs. Dell Nash, Idaho, Mrs. Joseph Balthazar and Mrs. William Balthazar, both of Fond du Lac; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

  • Note: Melvin R. La Fond, 98, of Black Creek passed away Thursday, February 5, 2015 in Freedom at the home of his daughter surrounded by his family. He was born May 21, 1916 son of the late Edward and Sarah (LeJoyce) La Fond. On April 14, 1937 he was united in marriage to Almira Willey in Wrightstown. She preceded him in death on September 4, 2003.

    He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Black Creek.

    Melvin served in the US Air Force during WWII in the South Pacific.

    He worked a few different jobs over the years and retired from Wisconsin Michigan Power Company in 1982. Melvin and Almira also operated an 80 acre dairy farm.

    Spending time with his family was important to Melvin, especially with his sweetheart Almira. In his free time, Mel enjoyed horseback riding, woodworking, and stained glass artwork.

    He is survived by his children: Rene La Fond, Bonduel; Rachel (John) Olofson, Freedom; Roberta (Roger) Jezeski, Black Creek; daughter-in-law, Joan La Fond, Hilbert; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren; sister, Dolly Rudd, El Paso, TX; two sisters-in-law: Francis Willey, Louisville, KY, and Grace Willey, Kaukauna; and brother-in-law, Harold Merkl, Wrightstown.

    In addition to his wife and parents, Melvin is preceded in death by a son, Roderick La Fond; grandson, Ryan La Fond; great-grandson Phillip Ryan Groskinsky Jr; siblings: Marie, Florian (Vi) La Fond, Babe (Joe) VandeWalle, and Royal La Fond; and brother-in-law, Donald Rudd.

    Friends may call at Muehl-Boettcher Funeral Home, Seymour on Monday, February 9, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. visitation will continue at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 9:30 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Fr.     Mullen, Ernest J.


    Ernest John Mullen, 78, of Sturgeon Bay, passed away at Door County Memorial Hospital on January 20, 2010. He was born August 15, 1931, in Wausau to John and Susan (Bronk) Mullen. He served his country in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War. Ernest graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Madison with a BA in electrical engineering and went to work for Wisconsin Public Service. On August 4, 1962, he married Bonita "Bonnie" Kaster in Green Bay. Ernie was a leader of public power systems in Wisconsin serving as the General Manager of Waupun Utilities from 1970-1972, Kaukauna Utilities 1972 - 1995, and Interim Manager Sturgeon Bay Utilities in 2000. Ernie was the President of the Municipal Electric Utilities of Wisconsin from 1976-1977. Ernie was the first president of Wisconsin Public Power Inc., serving five terms in that position from 1976-1981. Ernie served as president and then chair of the Board of Directors of WPPI and its Executive Committee from 1981-1994. Ernie also served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Public Power Association (APPA) for two terms from 1981-1987.

    Although his career achievements were quite impressive, most who knew him were unaware of his accomplishments. Anyone who was fortunate enough to meet him had a lasting memory of the genuineness of his character and the sincerity of his heart. Ernie was most proud of his family, especially his 10 grandchildren. He loved sharing his passion of gardening with all who would visit with a special "tour" of his garden.

    Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; four children: Lisa (Jim) Jenkner, Algonquin, IL; Linda (Chuck) Wheaton, Sturgeon Bay; Karla (Chris) Hammen, Appleton; Brian (JoAnn) Mullen, Carol Stream, IL; 10 grandchildren: Jessica and Julia Jenkner; Austin, Lauren, and Evan Wheaton; Mitchell and Kyle Hammen; Abigail and Sydney Mullen; Zoe Marmitt; a brother, Donald (Arlene) Mullen, Rothchild; and a sister, Grace (Bill) Detroit, Schofield.

    A concelebrated mass will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, January 25, 2010, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church, the Rev. Robert J. Kabat, Rev. Carl Schmitt and Deacon Paul Zenefski, concelebrants. Burial with veteran services will be at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the church after 9 a.m. on Monday until time of services. Memorials may be given to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or Corpus Christi Church in his name. The Forbes Funeral Home of Sturgeon Bay is in charge of arrangements.
