  • Note: "Mrs. Martin (Louise) Smits, 91, 220 S. Ontario St., De Pere, died Sunday morning. She was born Oct. 12, 1880 in the Netherlands and came to this country at the age of 12. The former Louise Van Dyck married Mr. Smits in May 1904 at St. Mary's Church, De Pere. She was a member of St. Mary's Christian Mothers Society.

    Survivors are her husband; seven daughters, Mrs. Emil (Florence) Van Ermen and Mrs. Fabian (Margaret) Reince, both of Green Bay; Mrs. Alden (Joan) Evearts, Suamico; Mrs. Ray (Angie) Schumerth, Mrs. John (Stella) De Groot, Mrs. Howard (Eloice) Zirbel and Miss Marion Smits, all of De Pere; two sons, Ossie, Manistique, Mich.; Ray (Bud) Smits, De Pere; 28 grandchildren, 64 great-grandchildren.

    Smits, Raymond "Bud"
    Raymond "Bud" Smits, 82, De Pere, passed away Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008. The son of the late Martin J. and Louise H. (Van Dyck) Smits was born Jan. 20, 1926, in De Pere, and was a lifelong resident. Bud graduated from St. Mary Grade School and East De Pere High School. He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1946, stationed in the Pacific Theater. Bud married the former Doris L. Frey on April 10, 1947, in De Pere. He worked at Nicolet Paper Co. for over 40 years. Bud was a member of the Optimist Club in the 1960's, and was a lifetime member of the American Legion. He was an avid bowler and golfer.
    Survivors include two daughters and their spouses, Linda Sue and Michael T. Anderson, De Pere; and Rebecca Ann and Steven Lambert, De Pere; five grandchildren, Jill (Russ) Patton, Marinette; Janelle Anne French, Green Bay; April (Michael) Tommarello, De Pere; Abbie Ann Lambert, De Pere; and Tyler John Lambert, De Pere; and four great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Stella De Groot, De Pere; and Margaret Reince, De Pere; two brothers-in-law, Donald (Jean) Frey, Green Bay; and Darrell (Eleanor) Frey, Oregon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris L. (Frey) Smits, on Feb. 25, 1993; a daughter, Jennifer Lynne Smits, in October of 1967; his parents, Martin J. and Louise H. (Van Dyck) Smits; Doris' parents, Arthur and Martha (Berthold) Frey; five sisters, Joan Evearts, Angie Schumerth, Florence Van Ermen, Eloise Zirbel, and Marian D. Smits; and one brother, Ossie Smits.
    Friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Community, Pope John XXIII Circle off Sportsman Drive, Town of Ledgeview, on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008, from 2 p.m. to the hour of the Mass. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m., Tuesday, at St. Mary Catholic Community with the Rev. John H. Harper officiating, followed by military veteran honors. Interment in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Cotter Funeral Home, De Pere, is assisting the family.

    De Groot, Stella M.


    Stella Marie De Groot, daughter of the late Martin & Louise (Van Dyck) Smits, was born in De Pere, December 17, 1913, and lived in this area most of her life. The former Stella Smits and John De Groot were married in St. Mary Catholic Church, De Pere, May 27, 1935. He preceded her in death on December 18, 1986. Stella was a member of St. Mary Christian Ladies, St. Mary Quilters, and Meals on Wheels.

    Stella and husband John were well known in the bowling circle taking many honors. Stella took high single game in the City Tournament in 1958 and many first place trophies. Stella and John loved camping and spending time with their many friends at Berry Lake.

    She is survived by two children: Wayne (Carol) De Groot and Kathy Smits; four grandchildren and spouses: Scott and Sue De Groot, Julie and Jerry Brockway, Todd and Rene Smits, and Kristina and Chad Olsen; eight great-grandchildren: Alex Brockway; Kieran and Samantha De Groot; Noah and Cameron Smits; and Kaitlyn, Marissa and Conner Olsen; a sister, Margaret Reince; a very dear friend, Lois Le Duc; and many dear nieces, nephews, and extended family of Brian, Todd, Jon, Renata and Julie.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters: Joan Evearts, Angie Schumerth, Florence Van Ermen, Eloise Zirbel, and Marion Smits; two brothers: Ossie Smits and Raymond "Bud" Smits; son-in-law, Neil F. Smits; granddaughter, Mary Louise Smits; and a very special friend, Carl Matzke, who Stella was very proud to have known.

    A special thank you to the entire staff at Birch Creek for their amazing care and kindness, and to Southern Care Hospice for their dedication and concern.

    Family and friends may call Monday, June 15, 2009, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:45a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Community, Pope John XXIII Circle, off Sportsman Drive, Town of Ledgeview. On November 16, 1946 she married Fabian Joseph Reince at St. Mary Catholic Church, De Pere. She was a member of St. Joseph Parish Altar Rosary Society in her earlier years. Margaret enjoyed reading, playing solitaire, cooking and making her own candy.

    Margaret is survived by her children, Craig (Shirl) Reince, Karen (Gary) Borman, Joy (Rod) Parus; son-in-law, Dan Besson; grandchildren, Stephen Reince, Nicole Wickman Carter, Andrew Wickman, Michael (fiancé Leisha) Borman, Beth (Chris) Monroe, Amy (Neil) Van Severen, Thomas Borman, Bridget (Michael) Milosch, Patrick (fiancé Julie) Holzinger; great-grandchildren, Zach, Ashley and Dominic Carter; Dawson and Olivia Wickman, Isabella Borman, Kaitlyn Borman, Hailey and Emma Monroe, Damian Borman, Madison Kowalski, Arianna Orth and Levi Milosch; sisters-in-law, Betty Delain, Ceil Reince, Joan Reince, Gail Wunsch; many nieces and nephews.

  • Note: "Mrs. Alden (Joan) Evearts, 87, a former De Pere resident, died Thursday noon, August 6, 1992 at a local hospital. The daughter of the late Martin and Louise (Van Dyck) Smits, was born May 5, 1905 in De Pere and lived in this area all of her life. The former Joan Smits and Alden Evearts, were married on July 19, 1932 and he preceded her in death on July 1st 1981. Joan had been a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, De Pere, and the Christians Ladies Society at the church. She had also belonged to St. Matthew Catholic Church and St. Benedict Catholic Church, Suamico. Joan enjoyed skiing and playing cards and loved to bowl, which she did until she was 81.

    She is survived by her children and their spouses, Lois Greene, Palos Verdes Estate, Calif.; Nancy and John Noel, Green Bay; Rita and James Brault, Suring; Alden and Bonita Evearts, Eugene, Oregon; James and Maria Evearts, East Tawas, Mich.; Mary Jeanne Melchior, Green Bay and her fiance Harold Sternhagen; Dianne and Joseph Brud; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; her brothers and sisters, Ozzie and Olive Smits, Manistique, Mich.; Florence Van Ermen, De Pere; Eloise and Howard Zirbel, De Pere; Margaret and Fabian Reince, Green Bay; Raymond and Doris Smits, De Pere; Stella De Groot, De Pere; a brother-in-law, Raymond Schumerth, De Pere; many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Alden; a great-granddaughter, Lea Noel; two sisters, Angie Schumerth and Marion Smits.

    Friends may call at Cotter Funeral Home, 860 N. Webster Ave., De Pere, from 4 until 8 p.m. Sunday and prior to the funeral on Monday. Christian Ladies Rosary at 6 p.m. Sunday and Parish prayer service at 7. Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary Church, De Pere with Rev. Anthony Dolski, officiating. Eloise graduated from East De Pere High School in 1934. She married her husband Howard Smits (sic-Zirbel), August 18, 1941. She worked for Kraft for many years and for Larson Canning Co. for 10 years, retiring in 1978. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church on St. Norbert College campus. Eloise enjoyed spending time with her family at their cottage on Rolling Stone Lake.

    Survivors include her husband Howard; her children, Barbara and Richard Hooyman, De Pere; Lynne Doherty, Green Bay; Dennis and Nancy Zirbel, Ashwaubenon; Debbie and Gordy Hutjens, 13 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, her brothers and sisters, Florence Van Ermen, DePere; Ossie and Olive Smits, Manistique, Mich.; Stella De Groot, De Pere; Margaret and Fabian Reince, Green Bay; Bud Smits, De Pere; and brother-in-law, Ray Schumerth, De Pere.

    She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Joan Evearts, Angie Schumerth, and Marian Smits.

    Friends may call at the Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. Tenth St., De Pere, from 4 to 8 p.m. today. Funeral 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church on St. Norbert College campus with the Rev. Gery Meehan officiaing. Burial in the Mount Olivet Cemetery.
