  • Note: Donald G. "Don" Holzer, age 83, of Stockbridge, died on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at the Chilton Care Center in Chilton. He was born August 23, 1931 in the Town of Stockbridge, son of the late George & Thelma (Haag) Holzer. Following the death of his father, Don became the head of the household at an early age and continued to operate the family homestead in the Town of Stockbridge.

    He married Jean Vollmer on June 4, 1955 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Hilbert. Following his retirement from his dairy herd, Don continued to raise crops and began driving school bus for the Stockbridge School District.

    He was a lifelong and faithful member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Don had a passion for fishing Lake Winnebago all year long, but Sturgeon Spearing held a special place in his heart. He also enjoyed playing Sheepshead in various card clubs, spent many hours tinkering on his old Model A's, and went out of his way to listen to and care for his elders.

    Survivors include his wife: Jean; children: George (Patti) Holzer of Hartford, James (Ann) Holzer of Chilton, Robert (Amy) Holzer of Stockbridge, Ronald (Ann) Holzer of Stockbridge, Gail (Daniel) Lichte of Baraboo; 10 grandchildren: David & Amy Holzer, John, Maria, Anthony & Thomas Holzer, Michael & Kelly Holzer, Rachel & Jack Lichte; 4 sisters: Joan (Charles) Hemauer, Mary (Willard) Hemauer, Jayne (Dale) Jaffke, Eleanor Gerhartz; a brother: Harvey Holzer; a sister-in-law: Carol (Paul) Gehl; a brother-in-law: Daniel (Barbara) Vollmer; and an aunt: Doris Haag. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Don was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father: Donald Barrett; and a brother-in-law: Charles Gerhartz.

    Funeral service will be at 11:00 am on Friday, February 13, 2015 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Stockbridge with the Rev. Michael Betley officiating. Burial will follow in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wieting Family Funeral Home (411 W. Main St.) in Chilton from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thursday, February 12, 2015 and on Friday at the church from 9:30 am until 10:45 am. A parish vigil service will be held Thursday evening at the funeral home at the close of the visitation.

    Les Abel, age 84 of Kaukauna, passed peacefully at his home on the river on Wednesday evening, May 31, 2017. Les was born on a dairy farm in Greenwood, Wisconsin on May 6, 1933, son of the late Theodore and Verna (Vollrath) Abel. He received his education at a country school in Clark County and was a 1951 graduate of the Greenwood High School. Les moved to Kaukauna in 1954 and worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper until 1967 when he founded Abel Insurance. On September 1, 1956, Les married Joyce Meyer at Zion United Church of Christ in Greenwood, and the couple recently celebrated sixty wonderful years together.

    Over the course of his professional life, Les was a voracious learner. He took many additional courses and classes, all intended to improve himself and his professional career. He was also extremely active in the community, having been a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ where he served on the Christian Enlistment Community, the building committee, and as a head usher for many years. He was also a member of the Kaukauna Alcohol and Drug Abuse Board, Kaukauna Educational Enhancement Network (KEEN), the Redevelopment Authority for the City of Kaukauna, Kaukauna Development and Design Committee, as a strategic planner for the Kaukauna School System, was a member of the Kaukauna Kiwanis Club and the Appleton Masonic Lodge #349. Les enjoyed volunteering at the Grignon Home and 1000 Islands Environmental Center.

    Les is survived by his loving wife: Joyce Abel of Kaukauna; a son: Mark (Jackie Haen) Abel of Kaukauna; a daughter: Kay (Mark Priebusch) Abel of Sherwood; two granddaughters: Marie (Dan) Putman and Janel (Kyle Megna) Abel; a brother: Ronald (Jean) Abel of Marshfield; and a sister: Janis Priewe of DePere. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by a brother-in-law: Daniel Priewe.

    The funeral service for Les will be held at 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 4, 2017 at IMMANUEL UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 510 Sullivan Avenue in Kaukauna. Rev. Gail Irwin, and private burial will take place at Union Cemetery. Family and friends of Les are invited to greet the family directly at the church on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.     Age 88, died unexpectedly Friday at a Green Bay hospital. He was born January 9, 1891 in the Township of Maine, Outagamie County. He lived at his present address most of his life, where he farmed and operated a saw mill and lumber business, known as the Schaumann Lumber Company. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Albert (Amelia) Klawitter, Route 1, Suring; a son, Norbert, Route 1, Menasha; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers: Harold and Alfred, both of Route 1, Menasha; two sisters: Mrs. Edna Casper and Mrs. Esther Curtis, both of Appleton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Fields Schaumann in 1976; also a sister preceded him in death. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Oneida Methodist Church with the Rev. Eldon Riggs officiating. Interment will be in Highland Memorial Park, Appleton. Friends may call from 2-9 p.m. Monday at the Muehl Funeral Home Seymour, and from 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church until the time of the service.

  • Note: David A. Bigfire, 44, Village of Howard, passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at St. Mary's Hospital in Green Bay, after a long battle of cancer. He was born in Green Bay on January 30, 1969 to the late Elmer J. Bigfire Jr. and JoAnn Bigfire (Van Ven Roy). David attended Bay Port High School and graduated in 1987 from Southwest High School. He enlisted in the Army and was stationed in Germany from 1987 to 1990. He was honorably discharged in 1990. He married Lisa A. Wessley on July 17, 1993 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Oneida, WI and together raised their three children. He was a resident of the Village of Howard for 13 years. David was employed at Pancake Place as a prep cook for the last four years. Prior to that, he held various positions at Richco and Stock Lumber.

    David was an avid Badger fan. He enjoyed gambling, going up north to Michigan, playing cards and cribbage, and babysitting. He liked helping at the Optimist pancake and porkie breakfast at River's Bend. More than anything, he especially enjoyed spending time with his family and pets, Sheila and Rukus. He was always skeeming up ways to make money and he liked his "Bud". He was always a good friend, there when you needed him. He was stubborn to the end.

    Survivors include: his loving wife of 19 years, Lisa A. Bigfire (Wessley); his children, Michael, Amber and Joshua; his mother, JoAnn Bigfire; his sisters, Julie (Steve) Bannow, Janet Bigfire, and Lisa Bigfire (Shane Skenandore); uncles, Gene Van Ven Roy and Joseph Bertrand; his In-laws, Carroll and Otis Wessley; and his grandmother, Stella Bigfire. David is further survived by five nieces, four nephews, two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

    He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer J. Bigfire Jr.; brother, Joseph M. Bigfire; uncle, Hilbert Van Ven Roy; aunts, Esther Bertrand and Rosie Gossen (Van Ven Roy), grandmother, Rose Heezen (Van Ven Roy); grandfathers, Jacob Van Ven Roy and Elmer Bigfire Sr.

    A Memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, April 23, 2013 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Pfotenhauer Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Howard-Suamico location, 1145 Cardinal Lane, Green Bay.
