  • Note: The start of the old Lancashire family of Standish came into beingshortly after the Norman Conquest, when the Bussel family acquired thetwo adjacent villages of Stanedis and Longetre, (now known as Standishand Langtree) as gifts from a grateful William the Conqueror. Later,an elder daughter of the family, Juliana, married Radulphus deStanedis, who took the name "de Standish". The family held theunbroken Lordship of the Manor of Standish over the following sevencenturies (1220-1920). Later the name was simplified to Standish. Thecountry seat of the family is at Standish Hall, which was first builton its present site in 1574 by Edward Standish. The family of Standishheld extensive lands in Lancashire, including coal mining rights overtheir lands in Adlington, near Macclesfield. In 1840 Sir ThomasStandish of Duxbury is reported to have sold a coal mine in Duxburyfor £8,000. Henry Noailles Widdrington Standish, the last Lord of theManor, died without any heir at Contreville in France and the house ofStandish came to an end.

With the marriage of Radulphus and Juliana, whose dowry gave them landand a name, we must say that the Standish family had begun. Ownershipof land brings legal documents or deeds and now, from the beginning ofthe thirteenth century, the story of the Standish family can befollowed.
One such deed records that in about year 1202 Siwardus de Dokesbury(Duxbury) and Hugh, his brother, granted some land in Burgh, nearChorley, to Radulphus de Stanedis, for which he paid a rent of twoshillings. This amount was far different from modern values.
In the year 1206 Radulphus de Stanedis and Siward de Longetre made anagreement concerning the partition of the manors of Standish andLangtree and of the advowson of the church of Standish. The advowsonapparently belonged to the manors jointly. (An advowson is the rightof presentation or recommendation of a clergyman to a benefice in thechurch.) By this agreement Radulphus retained the ploughlands ofStandish, 'common of wood and other easements' (i.e. use of wood andother land not one's own) and sixteen acres of 'assarted' land (i.e.cleared forest) on the south side of the church of Standish. Inaddition the two brothers-in-law divided the advowson between them andagreed to present new Rectors to the benefice of Standish alternatelywhen vacancies occurred. It appears that the Rector of Standish atthat date was the father of Radulphus and was named Leising.
Radulphus de Stanedis died in either 1219 or 1220 and should have beensucceeded by his son Richard, but his younger son, Alexander, who bythat time had become Rector of Standish, almost immediately succeededhim in the manor.
