    Achtner, Maxine H.

Maxine Achtner, 63, Neenah, peacefully joined family in heaven Sunday, August 16, 2009, with her family by her side following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born December 12, 1945, in Hancock, Michigan, daughter of Maxwell and Seraphine (Lenci) Gertz. Maxine was a Business Education graduate from Northern Michigan University and always had fond memories of growing up in Michigan. Maxine began teaching at Oshkosh West High School and met her husband David W. Achtner in Oshkosh, WI. David and Maxine were married in 1973 in Marquette, MI, and moved to Neenah, WI, in 1976 where they both continued their teaching careers. Maxine was most recently a business technology instructor at Fox Valley Technical College in Appleton before learning that the cancer she had fought in the past had once again returned. In years past she had also enjoyed working at Kimberly-Clark while raising her two children.

Maxine always enjoyed camping, gardening, ice-skating, traveling, crafting, and helping those in need. She always cherished spending time with family, friends and co-workers. She was a strong, humorous, and generous woman dedicated to helping others. Maxine will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, beloved sister, caring friend, and dedicated teacher.

Maxine is survived by her family: husband, David; two children: Andrew D. Achtner, Appleton; Angela (Chad) Tucker, Milwaukee; four sisters: Mary (John) Kimichick, Gladstone, Michigan; Joanne (Barry) Climie, White Lake; Jean Gertz and Jane Gertz, both of Big Bay, Michigan; brother-in-law, Richard (Patricia) Achtner, Mexico City, Mexico; four nieces and nephews: R. Mark (Suzanne) Achtner, Amy Achtner, Todd Achtner, and Eric Achtner; and cousins: Theresa (Lawrence) Jukuri, Joe Gertz, and Mike (Sue) Mickus, all from Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and Bette (Don) Singler, Appleton. Maxine is also survived by many close friends and godchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts, uncles, father-in-law and mother-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 20, 2009, at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger St., Neenah, with Fr. Bob Lexa officiating. A visitation for friends and family will be held at Kessler Funeral Home, 304 S. Commercial St., Neenah, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 19, and at the church from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of mass. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Maxine's name.

Maxine's family wishes to thank the Martha Siekman Cancer Center and staff, Dr. Kevin Mortara, Dr. John Swanson, and the Cherry Meadows Hospice staff for their compassionate care. A special thanks to John and Laura Tucker and the rest of our family, friends, and neighbors for all of their constant love and support.

"We will miss you and remember your love and generosity forever. We love you so much."
