M, b. December 3, 1937, d. April 20, 2014

Biography

  • Birth: Larry D Laes was born on December 3, 1937.
  • Death: He died on April 20, 2014, at age 76.
  • Burial: He was buried on April 20, 1968.
  • Note: Laes, Larry D.

A great heart stopped beating on April 20, 2014 due to damage beyond repair. Larry Donald Laes, age 76, passed away peacefully with his family by his side. He was born on December 3, 1937, the only child of the late Albert and Clara (Schunke) Laes. He married Janet Bloy on April 20, 1968 and cherished her for 46 years, staying just long enough to be with her on their final anniversary. On April 1, 1964 he joined the Brown County Sheriff's Dept and retired as a Sergeant in the Photo-ID department 26 years later. Photography was one of his hobbies as well as part of his work. He also enjoyed volunteering at Heritage Hill with his daughter, Beth, dressing up in characters of past days. He and his son, Eric, also volunteered and spent many happy hours parking planes at the EAA every summer. The day after he retired from the Sheriff's Dept he started working as an interpreter at Heritage Hill State Park. His specialty was blacksmithing, although he also worked in the print shop, cheese factory, the Belgian farm and fur trader's cabin. There are many school children and adults who learned about blacksmithing or how to print their very own bookmark from him. Larry loved all things history and also loved boats, serving in the U.S. Naval Reserves for a number of years. He actually built several small boats and a cedar strip canoe in his younger days and at age 71 achieved his life long dream of owning a Boston Whaler. He was one those remarkable people who could fix anything and had an innate curiosity about how things worked. He also belonged to the Fort Oneida Muzzleloaders Club and enjoyed their shoots and rendezvous. He was a pretty good marksman too! He and Jan loved their time in Door County where they had their trailer in Egg Harbor Campground for over Twenty Years.

He is survived by his loving wife, Jan; his much loved children, daughter, Bethany (Chris) Rogge and their children, Christopher Jr., Rebecca, Kassandra, Jessica (his pride and joy) and great-grandson, Rilee; son Eric (Kelli) Laes and granddog, Roz. He is further survived by his mother-in-law, Mabel Bloy DeGrave, his brothers and sisters-in-law, Harlan (Ruth Jean) Bloy, Barbara (Ben) Cruz-Uribe, Bonnie (Stan) Waslowski, nieces and nephews, especially his goddaughter, Kathy Waslowski, his paternal cousins Diane (Paul) Wallner and James DeCota III and his maternal cousins, Richard (Jane) Schunke, Diane Schunke, Shirley Urbanek, Diane (Larry) Schneider and Lou Ann (Ron) Sisel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Donald Bloy, his step father-in-law Roland DeGrave, his sister-in-law Ruth Ann Bloy, a special friend and Jan's aunt, Joan Bergman Crowe, cousins Harold Schunke, James (Mary) DeCota, cousin-in-law, Ed Urbanek, and his canine walking buddy, T.J.

Gathering of family and friends will be held from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Resurrection Catholic Church 333 Hilltop Drive Allouez. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M. with Bishop Robert Morneau officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Unity Hospice or Heritage Hill State Park. The family wishes to thank the staff of St. Vincent's 4th floor and 6th floor ICU; also the staff of Jack and Engrid Meng Residence. You are all Angels!

A blacksmith knocked at the Pearly Gate

His face was scarred and old

He stood before the man of fate

    For Admission to the fold

What have you done asked St. Peter

    To gain admission here?

I've been a blacksmith, sir! he replied

For many and many a year!

The Pearly Gates swung open wide

And St. Peter touched the bell

Come in, he said, and choose your harp

You've had your taste of Hell!

Larry~ we will love you and miss you always.
