    He lost his brother Richard, and father who were attacked andkilled by the indians. Mrs. Maxson escaped in a shallop toAcquetneck and her son was born soon after the landing in thespring of 1638 before the purchase of the island from theindians. He was the first white child born on the island ofRhode Island." Be this as it may in 1639 Richard Maxson was oneof the 14 men who signed their names 15 others making theirmarks to the following: "We whose names are underwritten doacknowledge legal subjects of his majesty, King Charles and hisname do bind ourselves into a civil body polotike unto his lawsaccording to matters of justice." The 29 men were of thesettlement which later was called Acquetneck (RI records, Vol.I, p. 70).
    Richard's widow, goodwife, deeded away her property in 1644.There is mention of one Maxson family, and only one has beenfound in the records of Mass. and RI. before the time of JohnMaxson and family. Richard Maxson was admitted to the church inBoston Aug 2, 1634, a journeyman and blacksmith employed byJames Everell who was a shoemaker and had a tanyard. Dec 7,1638 complaints were made against one Richard Maxson atPortsmouth charging oppression in the way of his trade(Blacksmith). He promised amendment and satisfaction.
    parents with others from England attempted a settlement atThrog's Point, sometimes called Maxson's Point, about thebeginning of the Pequot
    in a shallop. The next day Richard Maxson and his son Richard,said to have been 13 years old, and other men landed again toget goods and food when all were massacred by the indians. Mrs.Maxson and others left on the boat escaped and after a tryingvoyage landed on the island of Rhode Island where her son Johnwas born in the spring of 1638.
    purchasing and settling a tract of land called by the IndiansMisuuamcutwhich now comprises Westerly, Charlestown, andHopkinton, RI. He was married about 1665 and was made freeman atWesterly Oct. 29, 1668. He served as deputy to the generalassembly from Westerly 1670, 1686, 1690 and 1705. He wasoverseer of the poor 1687. The colony of Westerly had connecteditself as a branch to the Newport Seventh-day Baptist church ofwhich William Hiscox was pastor. John was a member of thisbranch before 1692. In 1708 the Westerly branch was made aseparate church. Sept. 20,1708 John Maxson Sr. was ordained tothe office of Elder (pastor) to the congregation in and aboutWesterly, now called the First Hopkinton SDBC at Ashway, RI.
    He was buried in the Clark burying ground near the Paytucketriver whereon a slate stone was the following inscription:
    of his life".
    The early ministers of the First Hopkinton church have beenreinterred on the spot where the church stood and a monument hasbeen erected to their memory.

Richard Francis Nuhlicek

  • Burial: He was buried in Knollwood Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, Manitowoc, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Richard Nuhlicek, 82, E2668 Sandy Bay Road, Kewaunee, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at the Aurora BayCare Medical Center of Green Bay, after a brief illness. Richard was born Nov. 17, 1928, on the family farmstead in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, to the late Charles and Mary Bauer Nuhlicek. He married the former Bernice Nooker on June 19, 1954, in Tisch Mills.

    Richard ran the family farm where he resided his entire life. He had many other jobs including driving a milk truck, a painter at Hamilton Mfg. and a welder at Hamachek Machine Company. He also operated a sand and gravel business. Richard later converted the barn into a shop where he spent many hours engineering and building his projects, helping all neighbors who needed something fixed and sharing his vast knowledge with his sons.

    He enjoyed playing his accordion with several local bands and especially liked entertaining with his music to the local nursing homes for the past ten years.

    Survivors include his wife, Bernice; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Wally Krueger, Appleton; Regina and Gary Brusky, Kewaunee; two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Wendy Nuhlicek, Hudson; Dave and Sue Nuhlicek, Kewaunee; five grandchildren, Karen (John) Onderko, Neenah; Jason Krueger, Chicago; Nicole (Damian) Rahmlow, Manitowoc; Heather Nuhlicek, Mishicot; and Brandon (Jadie) Krussow, Minneapolis, Minn. He is further survived by one two-year-old great-grandson, Christian Onderko; one great-granddaughter and great-grandson who will arrive in May; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

    In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his aunts and uncles, Tilly and John Blahnik, Joe and Leona Bauer, Bessie and Leo Engeldinger and Jimmy Bauer.

    Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church in Tisch Mills, with the Reverend Dennis Drury officiating, assisted by Deacon Robert Pribek. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at the Lambert-Eckert Funeral Home, 344 So. State St., Mishicot. There will be a parish wake service Tuesday evening at 6 p.m. at the funeral home led by Deacon Bob. Visitation will continue after 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday at the church, until the time of service at 11 a.m. Entombment will follow in the Knollwood Mausoleum, Hwy. 310, Manitowoc.

    A memorial fund has been established in his name.

    The Nuhlicek family would like to express a very special thank you to the First Responders and Kewaunee Rescue Squad for their special care shown to Richard and our family. Your kindness will always be remembered.
