    Van Straten, Leonard J. "Lenny" Leonard J. "Lenny" Van Straten, age 73, of Shiocton, passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2007, due to complications of pneumonia, at St. Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay. Leonard was born on April 14, 1934, in Shiocton, son of the late Aloysius and Cecilia (Dietzler) Van Straten. He attended Shiocton schools and worked on the family farm. He helped with the cabbage, the apple orchard, and took care of the leaves in the yard. After his dad died he went to work at the Sheltered Workshop in Appleton, where he enjoyed his work on an assembly line. Leonard was a lifetime member of St. Denis Church in Shiocton. He enjoyed watching ball games and going for walks.

    Leonard is survived by five brothers: Roger (Gerry) Van Straten, Shiocton; Gerald (Arlene) Van Straten, Shiocton; Russell Van Straten, Shiocton; Carl (Linda) Van Straten, Black Creek; Daniel (Ervida) Van Straten, Sheboygan; four sisters: Joyce Van Straten, Shiocton; Alice Van Straten, Shiocton; Karen Van Straten, Shiocton; and Mary (Robert) Van Kirk, Shawano. He is further survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Donald (Marvella), and a sister-in-law Gerri.

    Funeral Mass for Leonard will be held on Thursday, November 15, 2007, at 11 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church in Shiocton with Fr. John Kastenholtz and Sr. Pauline Feiner officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call directly at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

  • Note: Gerald A. "Gug" VanStraten, age 87 of Shiocton, died peacefully at his residence on Saturday, September 19, 2015. Gerald was born in Shiocton on June 1, 1928, the son of Aloysious and Cecilia (Dietzler) VanStraten. On October 12, 1955, he married Arlene Ellis at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Stephensville, WI. Gerald owned and operated VanStraten Oil in Shiocton for 55 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing making 55 trips to Canada.

    Gerald is survived by his wife, Arlene; children, Randy VanStraten, Diane Seidler, Wayne (Diana) VanStraten, Doug (Sue) VanStraten and Jennifer (Marvin) Garrison; grandchildren, Annette (fiancé Justin) Priesler, Theodore VanStraten, Matthew and Brian Powers, Jackson VanStraten, Shawn and Vanessa Young, Leah (Brian) Kern, Kimberly (Corey) Huettl, Tanner (Chelsey) Tate, Kylie (George) Faskell, and Ashley, Shannon, and Lauren Dillard; and 11 great-grandchildren. He is further survived by siblings, Roger VanStraten, Russell VanStraten, Carl (Linda) VanStraten, Daniel (Ervida) VanStraten, Alice VanStraten, Karen VanStraten, and Mary (Robert) Van Kirk; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

    Gerald is preceded in death by his parents; father and mother in-law, Burr Sr. and Ruth Ellis; daughter, Helen Elaine; daughter-in-law, Kerrie VanStraten; and siblings, Joyce, Donald, and Leonard VanStraten.

    The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015, at St. Denis Catholic Church, Shiocton. Family and friends are invited to visit directly at church on Thursday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and again directly at church Friday morning from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be in St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Township of Bovina.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

  • Note: Arlene Van Straten (Ellis), age 81 of Shiocton, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2017. She was born on September 11, 1935 to Burr and Ruth (Ross) Ellis. On October 12, 1955, Arlene was united in marriage to Gerald A. "Gug" Van Straten at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Stephensville, WI.

    Arlene was employed at several jobs over the years including the Marion Rest Home, Sno-Cap Drive in Oshkosh as well as driving school bus in Oshkosh. Arlene and Gerald owned and rented two houses in Oshkosh for college students for eight years. They also owned a wholesale ice business for eight years where Arlene did the books, ran production crews, and drove delivery truck. Arlene also worked at the family's gas station, Van Straten Oil in Shiocton for 22 years.

    Aft the age of 46, Arlene was diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer and was told she had only months to live. At the time of her passing, Arlene was the longest known Pancreatic Cancer Survivor in the world, over 35 years.

    Arlene is survived by her children, Randy VanStraten, Diane (James) Seidler, Wayne (Diana) VanStraten, Doug (Sue) VanStraten and Jennifer (Marvin) Garrison; grandchildren, Annette (Justin) Priesler, Theodore VanStraten, Matthew and Brian Powers, Jackson VanStraten, Shawn and Vanessa Young, Leah (Brian) Kern, Kimberly (Corey) Huettl, Tanner (Chelsey) Tate, Kylie (George) Faskell, and Ashley, Shannon, and Lauren Dillard; and 12 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

    Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald in 2015; daughter, Helen Elaine; daughter-in-law, Kerrie VanStraten; brothers, Eugene, Burr "Bud", and Lee Ellis; and sisters, Naomi Ellis and Ramona Donley.

    The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at St. Denis Catholic Church, Shiocton. Family and friends are invited to visit directly at church on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be in St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Township of Bovina.

    The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at both St. Joseph Residence and Hartland Hospice for the tender care given Arlene.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.

    Joyce E. Van Straten, Age 85, Shiocton, died on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at St. Joseph Residence in New London. Joyce was born on November 5, 1923, in Stephensville, daughter of the late Aloysius and Cecilia (Dietzler) Van Straten. She graduated from Shiocton High School in 1942. Joyce attended many school and community functions, rarely missing any. She was a lifelong member of St. Denis Catholic church in Shiocton. Joyce was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 60 years and also the Shiocton Senior Citizens. Joyce was very instrumental in holding the family together for many years. She also was a baby sitter for many Shiocton families over the years.

    Joyce is survived by five brothers: Roger (Gerry) Van Straten, Shiocton; Gerald (Arlene) Van Straten, Shiocton; Russell Van Straten, Shiocton; Carl (Linda) Van Straten, Black Creek; Daniel (Ervida) Van Straten, Sheboygan; three sisters: Alice Van Straten, Shiocton; Karen Van Straten, Shiocton and Mary (Robert) Van Kirk, Shawano. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Besides her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by two brothers: Donald and Leonard and two sisters-in-law, Gerri and Marvella.

    Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at 11 a.m. at St. Denis Catholic Church, Shiocton with Fr. John Kastenholz officiating. Visitation will be held at the church on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
