In March 1351 he was created Earl of Stafford and constituted Lieutenant and Captain General of the Duchy of Aquitaine. He died Aug. 31, 1372. This nobleman attaining his majority in 17th of Edward II, 1324, and then doing his homage, had livery of his father's lands, and the next year became a Knight by Bathing, and other sacred ceremonies, had robes, etc., as a banneret, allowed him out of the King's wardrobe for the solemnity; after which he soon became a personage of celebrity in the wars of Edward III, and after many years service to the King he was elected a Knight of the Garter, being one of the original members of that noble order. For his eminent services he was created March 5, 1351, Earl of Stafford, and constituted Lieutenant and Captain General of the Duchy of Aquitaine, in France, and in right of his wife acquired a considerable inheritance, and the Barony of Audley is supposed to have merged with that of Stafford. Biography

  • Birth: Hervey Bagot was born in 1150 in Bramelle, Staffordshire, England.
  • Death: He died in 1219, at age ~69.
  • Note: Hervey Bagot II, called the Younger, married Millicent, the daughter of his feudal lord, Robert de Stafford. She had two brothers and it was not foreseen that Millicent would be the great heiress which she subsequently became. The male line of the original family of Stafford was extinguished by the Crusade of 1190-92, and on the Staffordshire Pipe Roll of 5th of Richard I, 1192/3, Hervey Bagot is returned as owing 200 marks to have the Barony of Stafford, which was the inheritance of his wife, following the deaths sine prole of her two brothers. The following year shows his fine increased to 260 marks (to include the 200 marks) by William, Archbishop of Rouen, the famous LongChamp, who had been left guardian of the realm during the absence of King Richard, Coeur de Lion, on the Crusade; from his captivity in Germany Richard did not return until 1194. The elevation of Hervey Bagot, as he became known, having adopted his surname of Bagot, from the position of a simple knight to that of a feudal lord, appears to have given umbrage to many of the Stafford tenants, who considered themselves superior to him in birth and rank. Neither Hervey Bagot nor his son Hervey de Stafford were able to collect scutage from the tenants, and in 3rd of Henry III, 1219, after the death of Hervey, Millicent de Stafford and Hervey, her son, who took his mother's name, gave œ15 to be quit of all arrears of the scutage of King John, of all the fee of Hervey, her husband, so that the King may obtain all arrears by means of his bailiffs from those who had not paid or made fine for them. After this date the scutage was collected for several years by the Sheriff of the count (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 622.)
