  • Note: John Harrington was born about 1281. He succeeded his mother in 1293 and his father in 1297, being still under age. He was ceremonially knighted May 22, 1306, when Edward, Prince of Wales, was made a knight at Westminster, and probably accompanied the Prince on his expedition to Scotland to avenge the murder of Comyn. He was summoned to military services 1309-1335 and to Council 1324-1341 and to Parliament from December, 1326, to July 30, 1347, being from 20th of Edward II to 21st of Edward III, by writs directed to Johanni de Haverington or Harynton, whereby he is held to have become Lord Harrington. On the death of his brother Michael he succeeded to his vast estates. He married Joan, probably Dacre. Her husband's guardian had been a Dacre and the Dacre arms are on the Harrington tomb (Cokayne's Complete Peerage, Vol. 6, pp. 314/5). However, Crosten, in his History of Lancaster and Cheshire families, says that he married Juliana, daughter of Richard Berlingham. They had four sons: Robert, his heir, John, Thomas and Michael. (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 1015-1016.)

Biography

  • Birth: Robert de Harrington was born circa 1255 in Flemingby, England.
  • Death: He died in 1297 in Aldingham, Lancashire, England.
  • Note: Sir Robert de Harrington of Harrington in Cumberland, who in the latter half of the 13th century married his wife Alice, daughter of Sir Richard Cancefield and his wife Agnes, daughter of William le Fleming, Lord of Aldingham, an ancient Saxon Manor in Furness, and who, in 1273, acquired the Lordship of Aldingham, which had come into his hands in right of his wife on the death of her two brothers, John and William Cancefield, both of whom died in their minority and while under ward of the Abbot of Furness. The Flemings, from whom these Lancashire estates were inherited, had been in possession of Aldingham almost from the time of the Conqueror. One of them, Michael Flandreusis, or le Fleming, a military adventurer who came to England out of Flanders, is said to have been in the retinue of Duke William of Normandy, and to have taken part in the struggle on the red field of Senlac and was rewarded by William the Conqueror with a grant of the Manor of Aldingham, of which the Saxon Thane, or Thegn, Ernulf, had previously dispossessed. He was living in 1126 when Stephen of Blois and Boulogne, afterwards King of England, founded the Abbey of Furness, and his lands were exempted from the privileges granted the Abbot of Furness. (1. Michael le Fleming had three sons, William, who inherited Aldingham, Richard, who married Elizabeth Urswick, and Daniel. 2. William, eldest son of Michael le Fleming, married Alice, daughter of Thomas, son of Gospatric of Galloway. His son Michael and daughter Alice. 3. Michael le Fleming died young, about 1269, leaving a widow, Alina, and the Manor of Aldingham passed to Alice, sister of Michael, who conveyed it in marriage to Sir Richard Cancefield. They had John, William and Agnes, who at the death of her brothers, as stated above, received the estates and brought them to Sir Robert Harrington, who became Lord of Aldingham, and in this way the Harringtons first connected themselves with Lancashire.) Sir Robert Harrington and his wife, Agnes Cancefield Harrington, had two sons, John, who ultimately succeeded as heir, and Michael, whose line soon became extinct, and a daughter Elizabeth, who married William Neville of Liversedge. Robert of Harrington died in Cumberland 1297. (Kin of Mellcene Thurman Smith, page 1015.)
