Richard Knight

  • Note: In 1635 John Knight, Sr. came with his brother, Deacon Richard Knight from Romsey, England where they were merchant tailors. They came in the vessel "James" to Newbury, MA. They sailed from Southam on on April 5 and arrived in Boston on June 3rd. They were both listed as tailors of Romsey, County Hants. He was made a freeman of MA Bay on 25 March 1636 and that year he was elected one of the selectmen of Newbury and again in 1662. Much of his service to the town was in laying out lots, roads and grants, from 1638, when he first became lot-layer, until as late as 1675 when he was still acting in that capacity. His only jury service was in 1647 when he was on a trial jury, but that year he was appointed by the General Court to be a commissioner to end small causes, a local justice. He was engaged in dividing common lands in 1651 and in the division of Plum island in 1656. He was a deacon of the church for many years. He was educated enough to be able to make copies of town records for court purposes. In 1663 Richard and his friend Hugh March sat down for a game of cards at Knight's home. This was an offense against Massachusetts morality and informed upon, the two were presented at the quarterly court, one of the two witnesses against them being Bathsua, wife of his hephew John Knight. In King Philip's war he supplied a dragoon horse for thirteen weeks, bridles, a horse to Dedham, Ipswich and Salisbury, a gun and two horses. Richard made his will 17 August 1681 and it was proved 25 September 1683.

    John Knight and Richard Knight, tailors of Romsey, Hampshire, England, were brought to the Massachusetts Colony by the James of London, a ship of 300 tons. It sailed from Southampton on April 5, 1635 and arrived on June 3rd with passengers and cattle. John and Richard Knight, whose parents were probably William and Joan Hill Knight, settled in Newbury, Mass. Richard married Agnes Coffley. They had four daughters and he died Aug. 4, 1683 without male heirs. John Knight and his brother, Richard, became freeman on May 25, 1636. (Seven Hundred Ancestors, page 50.)

  • Note: 1653 September 27: The wife of Nicholas Noyes being presented for wearing a silk hood and scarf, upon proof that her husband is worth above two hundred pounds is cleared of her presentment. The wife of Hugh March and the wife of Richard Knight were charged with the same offence, but were discharged on proof that their husbands were worth two hundred pounds each. The wife of John Hutchins was discharged upon testimony of her being brought up above the ordinary ranke. At the same court the wife of Joseph Swett and the wife of William Chandler were convicted and fined ten shillings for wearing a silk hood and scarf. (Ipswich Court Records, vol. i, leaf 34.   • Note: Came to Lynn, MA abt 1646, He was one of the first settlers of Topsfield, MA. On Sept. 11, 1649, he was tried for winning the affections of a daughter of John Tarbox without the consent of her parents. He was fined for this romantic mischief five pounds, two shillings, and sixpence, and her parents were allowed six shillings for three days' attendance at court. His death date of "ye 30th day of Aprill, 1686," is given in the Inventory of his property/estate. (The Stanley Families, page v)

    Mathew Stanley, the immigrant ancestor, came to Lynn, MA, from England, about 1646. He was one of the first settlers of Topsfield, MA, and his descendants have been numerous in that town. He was probably related to Thomas Stanley, who settled in Saugus, near Lynn, and was deputy to the general court in 1635, removed to Hartford, Connecticut, and afterward to Hadley, Massachusetts. Thomas Stanley had a brother John who died on his way to New England, and a brother Timothy who settled in Cambridge and removed to Hartford.
