Family: Jeanne Catherine Lemoine Hus Cournoyer (b. May 16, 1680, d. January 2, 1744)

Biography

  • Birth: Jean Baptiste Lavallee was born on February 14, 1674 in Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.
  • Marriage: He and Jeanne Catherine Lemoine Hus Cournoyer were married on November 19, 1702 in St François-du-Lac, Yamaska, Québec, Canada.
  • Death: Jean Baptiste Lavallee died on December 30, 1743, at age 69, in Sorel, Richelieu, Quebec, Canada.
  • Note: Jean Lavallée, was the son of Jean Lavallée dit Petit-Jean and Marguerite Dusson, the first Lavallée settlers in the Sorel area and part of the original Sorel settlers. He was born on February 14, 1674, in Sorel. On November 19, 1702, he married Jeanne-Catherine Hus, daughter of Paul Hus and Jeanne Baillargeon, also "habitants" (inhabitants) of Sorel and original settlers, The marriage was registered and possibly performed at the Abenakis Indians mission of Saint-François-du-Lac, about 20km east of Sorel. In those days the whole area was served by a single travelling missionary; thus registrations and/or ceremonies did not necessarily happened at the location where people lived, but rather at the most convenient place on that day. Sometimes before 1723, and very likely at the time of his marriage in 1702, Jean Lavallée was given a concession on the fief of Paul Hus, his father-in-law. The fief of Paul Hus was located in the Seigneurie (seignory) of Yamaska, at a place commonly known as Chenal du Moine (Monk's Channel). Paul Hus never left his original concession in the Seigneurie of Sorel but acquired the fief which was still unconceded sometimes around 1694 from the Seigneur Pierre Petit, a merchant from Trois-Rivières. The eastern boundary of his fief was separated from his Sorel concession where he lived by only 5 km. In 1699 Paul Hus also acquired the adjacent Île du Moine (Monk's Island) also in the Seigneurie of Yamaska.

On the land census of the Seigneurie of Yamaska taken June 03 1723, we find the land of Jean Lavallée described as 3 arpents of width along the shore by 25 arpents of depth. This is equivalent to 576 feet and 4800 feet, about 56 acres. The original concession of Jean Lavallée was the westernmost lot, hence likely the first conceded, on the fief of Paul Hus, the latter being one lieu (about 3 miles) long along the Chenal du Moine. By checking older maps showing seigneurial boundaries it was relatively easy to match the concession to today's survey. The land of Jean Lavallée is now part of the Camp Ground at Chenal du Moine. It is interesting to note that today's land boundaries are the same or at least are parallel to the ones that were established more than 300 years ago. Today this area is part of the parish of Sainte Anne de Sorel. Jean Lavallée lived on this lot all his life, aside from his travelling for the fur trade. In 1727, he was given two additional pieces of land by his old father-in-law, by then 82, and the right of common pasture on the Île du Moine. I have not yet located the two other concessions, one of 4 arpents width, the other one arpent width. Being at least 1.5 miles downstream from his first concession it is unlikely that they were ever cultivated as in those days the area was not irrigated and was subjected to yearly flooding. Hence the benefit was mostly for hunting, in one of the world's top spot for migrating fowls. The "décharge" are XX century drainage ditches to the swamp of Baie de Lavallière.
