    Age 83, passed away at 7:45 p.m. Friday, January 1, 1988, at Appleton Medical Center following a short illness. She was born December 18, 1904, in Hortonville. She married Matt Hoffmann Sr., in 1921; they celebrated 62 years together on September 22, 1985. She was a resident of the Appleton area most of her life with the exception of six years she and her husband spent in Florida. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She found great joy raising fresh vegetables and flowers in her garden. Survivors include five daughters and fours sons-in-law, Virginia and Clifford Apitz of Florida, Mary Jane Kettner, La Crosse, Elaine and Maxwell Beattie, Appleton, Sylvia and LE Roy Sauer, Appleton, and Doris and Cyril Stadler, Appleton; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Matt Jr. and Dorothy Hoffmann of Florida, and Richard and Janet Hoffmann, Spencer, Wisconsin; three brothers and a sister-in-law, John and Bernice Fischer of Florida, Oscar Fischer of Florida, and William and Millie Fischer, Appleton, three sisters, Mary Van Heuklon, Appleton, Caroline Sedo, Menasha, and Cecilia Fischer, Appleton; 29 grandchildren, and 27 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Matt J. Hoffman Sr., in 1986; a sister, Angelina La Plant; and a grandsom, Timothy Stadler. The complete funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday, January 5, 1988, at 10 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Lawrence and Division Streets, with Rev. Joe Doerfler officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Wichmann Funeral Home, 537 N. Superior St., on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m., and also on Tuesday from 8 a.m., until the cortege leaves for the church. Parish and prayer scripture services will be at 7 p.m. Monday. A memorial fund is being established.

    Elaine Beattie, age 85 of Neenah, passed away surrounded by her family, at her home on Wednesday morning, February 4, 2015. Elaine was born in Appleton on August 25, 1929, daughter of the late Matthias and Anna (Fischer) Hoffmann. She was a 1947 graduate of the Appleton High School. She attended Fox Valley Technical Institute where she studied data processing. As a young woman she taught dance in Waupaca, Freedom, Kaukauna, and Menasha. She was also active as a Physical Education teacher at St. Joseph School in Appleton and was a teachers' aide to special need students at Highland, Huntley, and McKinley schools in Appleton until her retirement in 1997. Elaine loved to play Bingo, going out for lunch (especially with the Birthday Club), and until her eyesight gave out, reading. Elaine was a loving grandmother who doted on each of her grandchildren, and was an important part of their upbringing. She was always there with an encouraging word, hugs and kisses galore, or maybe a scratch on the back.

    Elaine is survived by four children: Jane (Jesse) Schiltz of Neenah; Patrick Beattie of Neenah; Frank (Ginger) Beattie of Neenah; and Sue (Mark) Tillman of Neenah; twenty grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; a brother: Richard (Joann) Hoffman of Marshfield; and two sisters: Doris (Cyril) Stadler of Appleton and Sylvia (LeRoy) Sauer of Appleton; three sisters-in-law: Dorothy Hoffmann, Ina DeCleene, and Jean Baumann; and two brothers-in-law: Jerry Kettner and Cliff Apitz. Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Maxwell, a brother Matthias Hoffman, Jr., sisters Mary Kettner and Virginia Apitz, and her in-laws: Nancy (Herbert) Byatt, Nick Baumann, and Vince DeCleene.

    The funeral liturgy for Elaine will be held at 11:30 AM on Friday, February 13, 2015 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 900 Geiger Street in Neenah, with Fr. Richard Allen officiating. Inurnment will be in Appleton's St. Joseph Cemetery. Family and friends are welcome to gather at the church on Friday morning from 10:30 AM until the time of the mass.     Beattie, Maxwell G. "Scotty" Maxwell G. Beattie, age 83, passed away Tuesday, October 2, 2007, surrounded by his family at his home in Neenah. He was born February 6, 1924, in Ayrshire, Scotland, the son of Francis and Jane (McCormick) Beattie. Scotty enlisted in the Argyle and Sutherland Highlanders at the age of 16. He landed on Sword Beach on D-Day and served in the European Theatre for over five years. Scotty was injured in battle and was a former prisoner of war. He helped with the liberation of Norway and the freeing of prisoners in the Jewish concentration camps. Scotty also served in Burma. The family came to the United States in 1948, and Scotty enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1949. Scotty met Elaine Hoffmann in Appleton. They were united in marriage on June 24, 1950, at St. Therese Catholic Church. He was a member of the BPOE Elks Lodge, Appleton, and the Masonic Lodge.

    Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Elaine; his sons, Patrick Beattie, and Francis (Ginger) Beattie, Neenah; his daughters, Jane (Jesse) Schiltz, and Susan (Mark) Tillman, Neenah; there are 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jean Baumann and Ina DeCline, Appleton; and many nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Nancy Byatt, and his step-father, Gavin Morrison.

    Funeral services for Scotty will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 5, 2007, at WICHMANN TRI-COUNTY CHAPEL, with Chaplain Jordan Kuczwara officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday until the time of services at the funeral home. Scotty will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery. A memorial is being established in his name.

    The family would like to express their thanks to Dr. Elisberg and Dr. Claypool, as well as the ThedaCare At Home Hospice staff. Scotty thought so much of you all.

    Sylvia was born July 25, 1931 preceded by her parents Matthew and Anna (Fischer) Hoffmann Sr.

    Sylvia attended St Therese Elementary School 1st through 9th grade and graduated from Appleton West in 1950. On September 25, 1952 Sylvia married Le Roy Sauer and was a stay at home mom and home-maker. She enjoyed an organic, holistic lifestyle and was a resident of Appleton most of her life. She was a much valued charter member of her parish, St. Thomas More and enjoyed helping many hours at church for 40 years with bulletins, bingo nights, and funeral dinners. Going to Florida for 4 months, January to the first of May, from 1997 to 2007 was one of her life enjoyments. She loved spending the holidays with family and friends, especially putting up all of the decorations at Christmas time. The years of camping, traveling, including trips to Hawaii were also her cherished pleasures.

    Sylvia is survived by a loving husband of 64 years Le Roy and children Linda Knapton, Gary Sauer, Thomas Sauer and by her granddaughter Jennifer Knapton. She is furthered survived by one brother, Richard (Joan) Hoffmann; one sister, Doris Stadler and brothers-in-law Cliff Apitz, Cy Stadler, Richard Zemke and sister-in-law JoAnn Chase.

    Sylvia was preceded in death by her daughter Sandra; one brother, Mathias Hoffmann; three sisters: Virginia Apitz, Mary Kettner, and Elaine Beattie; two brothers-in-law, Jerold Kettner, and Maxwell Beattie.

    Visitation for Sylvia will be held Friday, March 24th, at Valley Funeral Home from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and at St. Thomas More Church, 1810 N. McDonald Street on Saturday, March 25th from 9:00 am - 10:45 am followed by the funeral Mass at 11:00 am with Father Gerald Falk officiating.

    We would like to thank the Caregivers, Nurses and all of the people of St Paul Elder and Hospice Services who gave her the support and special care, honoring her values and wishes for her in her final stage of life.

    Bernice E. Fischer, 87, passed away on Saturday, August 27, 2005 at Century Oaks Home. She was born in the Town of Deer Creek on July 4, 1917 to the late Steve and Olive (Sayers) McClone. On May 14, 1936 she was united in marriage to late John Fischer. Bernice was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Bernice and her late husband John owned and operated John Fischer and Sons Construction. They built, owned and operated the Country Aire Supper Club. She loved cooking and was known for her pies and breads, she was also an avid gardener.

    Bernice is survived by her children: James (Nancy) Fischer, Winneconne, Richard (Delores) Fischer, Greenville, LeRoy (Patricia) Fischer, Appleton, and Judy (Jim) Dorn, Greenville sister Lucille (Kenneth) Jischke, Melbourne, Florida grandchildren: Randy (Kay) Fischer, Louann ( Brian) VandenBerg Terry Jo Schuman Tom (Lisa) Fischer Jenny (Kurt) Sommers Michael Fischer Patrick Fischer Cheryl (John) Trent Farrah (Craig) Haese Todd Schwebs Kim Schwebs Trisha (John) Kostelny Korey (Robin) Fischer David (Shannon Bailey) Fischer 17 great grand children Best friend of 70 years Loretta Bosin other relatives and friends.     Funeral service will be held Wednesday August 31, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 404 W. Lawrence Street, with father Larry Abler officiating. The visitation will be on Tuesday at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m.with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m and visitation on Wednesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial has been established in Bernice's name.
