He was born in Florence on December 27, 1932, the son of Gus and Ida (Leitze) Dunkel. He served his country as a proud member of the United States Army in the Korean War.

Paul believed that volunteering was very important. As one of the founding members of St. Bernard Catholic Church, he was involved as an usher and catechist for many years. He also volunteered his time for the Fox Cities Convention Bureau, coached a youth baseball team for Tusler Pontiac, and he continued his love for baseball by volunteering at the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship. Paul also volunteered at his winter home in Arizona for the Senior PGA. Later in his retirement years he was a driver for the Disabled Veterans Association. Paul enjoyed deer hunting, trout fishing, the outdoors, including the wildlife in his own backyard. He was known to his family as "Mr. Fix-it", and was always thinking of innovative ways to fix anything. His hobbies included wood carving, woodworking, snowmobiling and designing jewelry. His Grandchildren frequently saw their grandfather at their many extracurricular activities where he always offered free advice. Paul retired from Neenah-Menasha Ford as an auto technician. He enjoyed traveling in his RV and around the world with his loving wife.

Paul and Shirley (Lukas) were married on June 1, 1957 in Armstrong Creek. He is survived by his wife Shirley; their four children, Cheri (John) Kane, Deb (Chuck) Kaufman, Patty (Kevin) Lillge , and Paul Dunkel, Jr; grandchildren, Connor and Kendall Kane, Naomi (Ryan) Wickens , Benjamin and Nathaniel Kaufman, Brittany and Maria Lillge, and Parker, Trevor and Spencer Dunkel; and one great-grand child, Satori Kaufman.

Survivors include his sister, Betty (Stan) Novak and sisters-in-law, Carol and Lorraine.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1617 W. Pine Street, Appleton, on Thursday morning, August 14, 2014, from10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 noon. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 12 noon, in the church, with Father Dennis Ryan officiating.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Theda Care at Home, and the Oncology Staff at Appleton Medical Center and Hospice for their compassion and loving care.
