In 1816 he emigrated to Tioga county from Schoharie, N.Y. and settled in the township of Middlebury, where he remained until 1843, when he removed to Sycamore, Ill., where he resided until his death.

  • Note: It is reported by the family that Samuel, who married Mary Hix, emigrated to Osceola, PA with 4 of his sons (Charles, Samuel, Jedediah, Abijah). No direct proof that Samuel emigrated but Mary did, as she died there. The family was there as early as 1801. Samuel and Jedediah bought in company jointly in 1808; after their mother died, they sold out in June. The signatures were "Samuel and wife Sally" and "Jedediah and wife Sarah." Whether the father died in Richmond, NH or Osceola is not known.

  • Note: Samuel, the son of William and Abigail Carpenter lived in Rehoboth MA all his life. It was recorded that he advanced money to carry on "Phillips War". This may refer to the Wamponpag Indian leader which led the Indians in the worst New England Indian war, starting in 1675, when three Wamponpag Indian warriors were executed for the murder of a Christian Indian, an informer of an alleged Indian conspiracy against the whites. When the 3 Indians were tried and executed he declared war. By 1676 however the whites gained strength and destroyed the Indians crops, captured their women and children, including Phillips wife and son. From all the gatherings, he was a man of fairability, reliable, and a worthy citizen; probably not educated, as his father died when he was young, and the work of the farm which was given to him and his mother gave him no time for schooling.

    Records show that he was a finewriter, a man of affairs, possessed of much ability. Other Information includes but not limited to; Deputy to the Genera lCourt from Weymouth in 1641-43 and from Rehoboth in 1645, Constable in 1641. He was a close friend to Gov. William Bradford, who married his cousin Alice Carpenter. He bought the area now called Rehoboth (8 miles square) from the Indians.Proprietors' clerk from 1643-49. Contributed toward the expenses of King Phillips War. He was a Captain of militia.
