  • Note: Jack Miller, age 77, of Appleton, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at his home. He was born on May 6, 1934 in Shawano, the son of the late Eli and Madge (Downs) Miller. Jack served his country in the U.S. Navy. He retired from Calnin & Goss in Appleton after more than 30 years of employment. Jack was a member of the Operating Engineers #139, VFW Post #2126, Menasha and Jacob Coppus Post #258 - American Legion, Little Chute. He will be remembered as a very generous man, always feeding the neighborhood dogs and feeding the birds. Jack enjoyed listening to polka music and his trips to the casino.

    Jack is survived by his loving wife, Jean "Dolly" Miller; son: Jay Miller, Appleton; sisters: Delores Reitz, Amberg; Yvonne Squires, Union Grove; Rosemary "Gail" Koehnke, Elkhorn and Dawn Collova, Burlington; brothers: Jerry (Nancy) Miller, Burlington and James (Norma) Miller, Burlington; Dolly's siblings: Millie (Norm) Bodway, Menasha; Elaine (Dan) Stevenson, Appleton and Jim (Marilyn) Derks, Appleton; godson, Steve Haag and special great-niece, Brooke Zimmer. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Jack was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Marie Fitzpatrick; father-in-law, Ed Derks; brothers-in-law: Bert Reitz and Danny Squires.

    The funeral service for Jack will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME with Deacon Mark Farrell officiating. Interment with full military honors will take place at Highland Memorial Park in Appleton. The visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service.   • Note: Marilyn Derks, age 70, of Appleton, entered into eternal life after, a courageous battle with cancer, at 9:26 AM, on December 5, 2013 at her home, with family by her side. Marilyn was born on January 10, 1943 to the late Alton "Tony" and Ruth (nee Schmidt) Miller in Milwaukee. She was united in marriage with James Derks on November 2, 1968 in Appleton. Marilyn attended St. James United Methodist Church in Appleton. She worked as a waitress when her children were young, and went on to have a successful career of over twenty years at Sears until her retirement.

    Marilyn's biggest passion in her life was caring for her family and her home. She had a creative sense to bring old items back to life; from painting her cottage to sewing her own curtains to designing and maintaining her beautiful rock garden. She had a profound motivation to be engaged in projects and activities with her family, and especially her grandchildren. All those that knew her were impressed at her determination to start a project and follow it through until completion.

    Marilyn enjoyed her summers at Lake Poygan with her family and grandchildren. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, her pride and joy, and created fond memories with them by sharing herself and keeping them active by showing them how to cook, build a bonfire, fish, play cards and be loved.

    Marilyn enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening, sewing, landscaping, fishing, painting, and canning her home grown fruits and vegetable jams. Marilyn would be best defined as an artist, she had unique talent and creativity in challenging herself to take practical items and make them into treasures. She was well known all her life for giving haircuts to all the men in her family; they would be lined up to get a haircut from Grandma.

    Marilyn will be sadly missed by her husband, James Derks; children: Troy Derks, Appleton; Todd (Renee) Derks, Appleton; Grandchildren: Bailey and Bradley Derks, Appleton; brothers: Maynard (Beverly) Miller, Colorado Springs; Richard (Kay) Miller, Waupaca; sister: Carol Zuleger, Larson; sisters-in-law: Millie (Norm) Bodway, Menasha; Elaine (Dan) Stevenson, Appleton; Jean "Dolly" Miller, Appleton; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

    She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Twilla Jo; brothers: Robert and Alton "Junior" Miller; parents-in-law: Marie Fitzpatrick and Edward Derks; brothers-in-law: Paul Zuleger and Jack Miller.

    A funeral service for Marilyn will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 9, 2013 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, with Rev. Mark Klaisner officiating.   • Note: Todd J. Derks, 42, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, October 9, 2016. Todd was born on November 16, 1973 to James and Marilyn (Miller) Derks in Appleton. On June 17, 1995 he was united in marriage to Renee Krause.

    Todd spent his childhood riding bikes and exploring the neighborhood with his brother Troy and special friend Jerimiah (Snar) Parker. He enjoyed learning to hunt and fish with his best friend, his brother, Troy Derks; they loved to be together and had fun preforming a variety of other outdoor activities. His family took vacations at Shawano Lake during the summers. Todd was confirmed at St. James United Methodist Church in Appleton in 1988. He graduated from Appleton West High School in 1992. Todd worked for over 20 years at Outagamie Co-op Services where he worked his way up to Assistant General Manager. He then started his own business with many business ventures including businesses, rental properties, and ATM vending. After Todd married Renee in 1995, they were blessed with two wonderful boys who made their family complete. Todd loved his dogs, who he had around him his whole life, most recently his best pal Shadow. Todd loved to go boating and fishing with his family, especially on Lake Poygan. Everyone looked forward to his cooking and grilling, both of which he loved to do. He loved to sit around the fire telling stories and playing guitar. Music was an important part of his life, especially Elvis and The Beatles. He was a great story teller and always made people laugh. He loved to learn new things about history, science, politics, or anything else that peaked his interest. One of the greatest things about him was his determination, no matter what projects he was working on, he put all his efforts into it; even if it took days, with multiple trips to the hardware store.

    Todd is survived by his wife Renee, two sons; Bailey and Bradley Derks, his father, James H. Derks, a brother Troy, his God mothers; Carol Zuleger and Jean Haag, his mother-in-law, Anne (Paul) Wollangk, his father-in-law, David Krause, sisters-in-law; Melanie (Brendan) O'Brein, Lacy (Justin) Challe, and Nicole (Adam) Kovar, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Todd was preceded in death by his mother, an infant sister Twila Jo Derks, and one of his special friends, his dog Tipper.

    The funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, 537 N. Superior St. A time of visitation will be held on Friday, October 14, 2016 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Wichmann Funeral Home and on Saturday from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Highland Memorial Park.
