Earle, 95 The Andover Townsman Thu Apr 04, 2013, 02:00 AM EDT Andover — Born in Dawson Springs, Ky., to Irbie Earle, a civil engineer who helped design the El in Chicago, and Mary Frances McKenna Earle, who studied voice at the New England Conservatory of Music, Robert Earle came of age in Carbondale, Ill., where he became the first Boy Scout in southern Illinois to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. During high school he was an athlete, poet, essayist, and saxophonist. At age 13, he formed a jazz band, The Egyptian Ambassadors, performing throughout the Little Egypt region of Illinois for the next five years. While attending the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., he met his future wife, Margaret Peck, a student at the St. Paul School of Art. They celebrated 72 years of marriage in September of 2012. After 11 years in the U.S. Army, including assignments at the Pentagon and at the American Embassy in Copenhagen, he settled his family in Massachusetts, where his career in corporate management included proposing and spearheading a late 1960’s Avco Corporation program that employed exclusively minorities to build, staff, and manage a state-of-the-art printing company in the heart of Roxbury. Preceded in death by an infant son, a grown daughter, and a grandson, Robert is survived by his wife, five children, nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. We strive to carry on the legacy of this quiet man of honor, humility, humor, faith, and devotion. Memorial donations may be made to Smile Train (www.smiletrain.org).
