    Age 86, died Monday after a short illness at the Omro Care Center. She was born May 17, 1900 in Dubuque, Iowa and has been in Menasha since 1920. She was a member of the St. Ann Society of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Neenah-Menasha Top's Club, and the Menasha Senior Citezens. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Donald (Adeline) Dorzweiler, Appleton; three sons and daughters-in-law: Ben Peter and Maryann, Menasha; Harold and Dorothy, and Harvey and Shirley, Neenah; a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Gert Joos, Tigertown; three sisters; Mrs. Mathilda Nabbefeldt and Mrs. Viola Hein, Menasha; Mrs. Clarine Burt, Frederickstown, Ohio; 27 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two daughters and one son. Funeral services will be Thursday, 10:30 a.m. at the Lammrich Funeral Home, 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. William O'Halloren SSS officiating. Interment will be in the St. Margaret Cemetery, Neenah. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 until 9 p.m. Wednesday. There will be an 8 p.m. prayer service. A memorial fund has been established for the Easter Seal Society.

    Mrs. Joseph Barrens, 49, of 910 W. Brewster street, died about 11:30 Tuesday morning after a long illness.

    Surviving are the widower; two daughters, Mrs., Louis Brum, Appleton, and Miss Audrey, at home; two sons, William and Joseph, Appleton; two brothers, Henry and William Scherer, Menasha; two sisters, Mrs. John Karsten, Kaukauna, and Mrs. Louis Cybulski, Gilman; and a grandchild.

    Friends may call at the Ellenbecker Funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock tonight and at 8:30 Thursday night.

    After the cortege forms at the funeral home. at 8:45 Friday morning, services will be at St. Therese church at 9 o'clock with the Rev. M. A. Hauch in charge. Burial be in St. Joseph cemetery,

    Mrs. Berrens was born July 6, 1900, at Stockbridge and lived in Appleton the last 12 years. She was a member of the Christian Mother's society of St. Therese church.

    Age 88, died Wednesday, January 1, 1992 at Oakridge Gardens Nursing Home. William was born May 29, 1903 in Stockbridge, Wisconsin, son of the late Henry and Gertrude (Puetz) Scherer. He farmed as a youth in Stockbridge and also worked at the High Cliff Lime Kiln in his younger years. William worked at American Can for over 40 years retiring in 1967 at the age of 63. He was also a member of their Quarter Century Club. William enjoyed fishing, making toys and play ing Santa Claus. He also enjoyed blackberry picking at his cottage in Mountain, Wisconsin and he loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by a daughter, Betty (Rueben) Hoelzel, Menasha; six grand children: Thomas (Sharon) Hoelzel, Beverly (James) Meyers, Wayne (Shirley) Hoelzel, Linda (Gerald) Kersten, Barbara (Dennis) Clow, Michael (Susan) Hoelzel; 10 great- grandchildren: Scott Hoelzel, Debbie (Tom) Galinsky, Deborah (Robert) Lee, James (Denise) Meyers Steven Meyers, Brian Hoelzel, Michelle and Kevin Flowers, David and Stacy Hoelzel; three great-great-grandchildren: Chandra and Charissa Lee, Brandon Andrew Meyers; three step- great-grandchildren: Loren, Ottilia and Lenny Hoehne; a step-great great-grandchild, Kyla Hull. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his wife, Abbie E. Dunn; six sisters and a brother. Services will be Saturday, January 4, 1992 at 2 p.m. from the Westgor Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy Geenen officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery. Friends may call on Fri day from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Westgor Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. A memorial has been established.

    Honorary pallbearers include: James G. Meyers, Steven P. Meyers, Kevin Flowers, Brian HoeLzel, David Hoel zel, and Scott Hoelzel.

    William was a loving father, grandfather, great and great-great-grandfather, father-in-law, and he will be missed by all but we are comforted in knowing he is in the presence of the Lord.

    Age 83. Died Saturday morning at Theda Clark Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. She was born May 23, 1901, in Hortonville, the daughter of Thomas Dunn and Abbie Kimbal. She was a loving wife and beloved mother and grandmother. She was married to William on Dec. 14, 1922, in Waukegan, Ill. She had been a Menasha resident for over 60 years. Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Reuben Hoelzel of Menasha; six grandchildren, Thomas and Joseph Hoelzel, Mrs. James (Beverly) Meyers, Wayne Allen Hoelzel, Mrs. Linda Rose Flowers, Mrs. Barbara Jean Clow, Michael William Hoelzel; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters and four brothers. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Westgor Funeral Home with the Rev. Michael O'Rourke officiating. Burial is at Resthaven Cemetery. Friends may call today from 4 until 8 p.m. A memorial has been established.

Thomas Joseph Hoelzel

  • Note: Thomas J. Hoelzel, of Neenah, age 70, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 at Rennes Health Center in Appleton, following a yearlong battle with GBM brain cancer. He was born August 24, 1942 in Neenah, son of Reuben and Betty (Scherer) Hoelzel.

    Tom married Sharon Kossel on September 15, 1962. He worked for 42 years at George Banta Co. until his retirement in 2002. Tom then worked for Bergstrom Ford for 8 years until retiring in 2011.

    Tom was a Master of Lake Winnebago and was an avid fisherman of Walleye and Perch. He loved NASCAR and the Brewers and was an overall sports fan. Tom enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

    Tom was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Menasha and currently a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Neenah. He was also a member of the Graphic Arts International Union Local 77.

    Survivors include his wife, Sharon; two children: Scott (Lea Anne) Hoelzel, Deborah (Tom) Galinsky; four grandchildren: Kiela Hoelzel, Chelsea, Aaron and Evan Glinsky; his beloved pet, Annie; five brothers and sisters: Beverly Meyers, Wayne (Shirley) Hoelzel, Linda Kersten, Barb (Dennis) Clow, Mike Hoelzel; his mother, Betty Hoelzel; a brother-in-law, Donald Kossel; sisters-in-law: Lucille Kossel, Ruthie Kossel; and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

    Tom was preceded in death by his father, Reuben; and numerous brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

    The funeral service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home with Fr. Michael Ingold officiating. The visitation will be held at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the hour of service. In lieu of flowers a memorial is being established for the Fox Valley Brain Tumor Coalition.

  • Note: Shirley Ann Hoelzel, age 66, of Menasha passed away on Wednesday evening, January 15, 2014 at Appleton Medical Center. She was born on March 25, 1947 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, daughter of the late William H. and Elizabeth D. (Zenisek) Gibson. Shirley graduated from Menasha High School in 1965. On June 29, 1968 she married Wayne A. Hoelzel at St. Patrick's Parish in Menasha. The marriage was blessed with one son, Brian, and 45 wedding anniversaries. In 2012 Shirley retired from SCA Tissue after 42 years, and continued her hard work by volunteering for Sturgeon for Tomorrow. She showed her eagerness to help others by her many deeds, including grocery shopping for her elderly neighbor, Dorothy. Shirley's greatest joy was time spent with her beloved family, especially with her grandsons. She also enjoyed shopping, vacations, and going out to lunch with her husband and their friends.

    She will be sadly missed by her loving husband, Wayne; her son, Brian Keith (Linda) Hoelzel, Waupaca; grandsons, Carter and Bennett Hoelzel, Waupaca; her sister, Virginia (Jerome) Baer, Neenah; her brother, Gerald (Karen) Gibson, Neenah; mother-in-law, Betty Hoelzel, Appleton; sisters-in-law: Barbara (Dennis) Clow, Menasha, Beverly Meyers, Menasha, Linda Kersten, Appleton, Sharon Hoelzel, Neenah; brother-in-law, Mike Hoelzel, Menasha; as well as nieces, nephews, and friends too numerous to list. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Tyler Keith Hoelzel; twin sister, Sharon Gibson; brother, Dave Detlaff; sister, Sandra Lee (Dave) Hermes; father-in-law, Rueben Hoelzel; sister-in-law, Sue Hoelzel; brothers-in-law: Tom Hoelzel, Jerry Kersten, James Meyers.

    Memorial Mass will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Menasha, with Father Paul Paider officiating. Friends will be received on Monday, January 20, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Neenah's Westgor Funeral Home, and again on Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of Mass, directly at the church. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
