  • Note: Rosemary Van Straten started a new life in heaven Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011, joining her husband of 62 years, son, and many cherished friends and relatives.

    Although Rosemary's passing leaves a void in the lives of many, all are thankful for the example of strength and compassion that she shared during her 83 years of life.

    A lifelong resident of De Pere, she was one of 12 children, daughter of the late Alphonse and Petronella (Baeten) DeVleeshower. On July 10, 1946, she married Bernard Van Straten. During the early years of their marriage Bernard took ownership of his parent's farm and together they were blessed with nine children.

    Rosemary dedicated her life to her family. As a mother, she took pride in each child, always encouraging each other to offer help when needed and to celebrate the joy of accomplishments.

    Her family includes the following children and their spouses, Carol and Joseph Biese, Green Bay; Marlene and Jim Johnson, Katy, Texas; Darlene Van Straten and Hann Shyu, Portsmouth, R.I.; Debbie Van Straten and Tom Zwicker, Germantown; Lou Ann Bannow, Suamico; Gail and Bob Cuene, De Pere; Ron and Jessica Van Straten, De Pere; Judy and Joseph Siudzinski, Green Bay. She leaves behind 19 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

    Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; son, Wayne; nine brothers and sisters, Joe and Helen DeVleeshower, Eleanor and Pete Patterson, Art and Verna DeVleeshower, Angie Baeb, Eda and Louis Gerrits, Earl and Ida DeVleeshower, Ervin DeVleeshower, Pearl DeVleeshower, and Henry DeVleeshower.

    Relatives and friends may call at St. Mary Catholic Church, 4805 Sportsman Drive in Ledgeview on Monday, Nov. 7, 2011, from 9 to 11 a.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the church on Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev.     Van Straten, Bernard Bernard Van Straten, 87, lifelong resident of Ledgeview, passed away peacefully at St. Vincent Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 2, with his family at his side. He was born Nov. 4, 1919, in Ledgeview to Peter and Louise (DeCleene) Van Straten. When his parents retired, Bernard took over the farm. Farming and gardening gave him great satisfaction. An enthusiastic inventor never more at home than when welding in his garage, Bernard created every sort of small motorized car, and even an electric swing. His children and grandchildren were his willing testers. His pride and joy was a modified Model T that he built as a young boy. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Rosemary (DeVleeshower) Van Straten; and his seven "favorite" daughters, Carol (Joe) Biese, Green Bay; Marlene (Jim) Johnson, Houston, Texas; Darlene (Hann Shyu) Van Straten, Portsmouth, R.I.; Debbie Van Straten (Tom Zwicker) Germantown, Wis.; Lou Ann Bannow, Suamico; Gail (Bob) Cuene, Ledgeview; Judy (Joe) Siudzinski, Ledgeview; and "most favorite" son, Ron (Jessie), Ledgeview; 19 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; and three well-worn tractors. Also surviving are his two sisters, Sister Mary Conrad and Sister Mary Louise of Elm Grove, Wis. He is preceded in death by his son, Wayne. Family and friends may call on Saturday, Oct. 6, 2007, for a public visitation from 9 a.m. to 10:40 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Community, Pope John the XXIII Circle, off Sportsman Drive, town of Ledgeview. A family only prayer will be held at 10:45 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church with the Rev. John H. Harper officiating.     Berken, Roy
    Roy Berken, 90, Ashwaubenon, passed into eternal life on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at his home. He was born on Oct. 7, 1917, in De Pere, to the late Hubert and Mary (Baeten) Berken.
    Roy worked on the family farm until 1942 when he began to serve his country in the Army Air force during World War II, in which he participated in the Rhine Invasion. He received numerous Air metals and a certificate of recognition from France. On May 31, 1948, he married Mary (Maloney) Berken. He worked for many years as a truck driver for the Green Bay Chicago Lines, retiring in 1979. Roy was an avid sportsman. He enjoyed baseball, hunting, fishing, bowling, and recorded 2 hole-in-one's golfing. Roy was an avid Packer fan who looked forward to game day when he parked cars in his yard. Socializing with many "regular" parkers was the highlight of his day. He also had his weekly card games with the "boys" in De Pere. On his 89th birthday memories of his younger days were relived when he flew a World War II single engine Warbird, including doing two barrel rolls. Roy tried to live life to its fullest and will be remembered for his astute political analysis.
    Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Mary; one son and daughter and their families, Joel (Debra) and their children, Kaitlyn and Krista, Green Bay; Belle (James) East and their children, Trevor and Myles, Fallbrook, Calif.; brother-in-law, Gerald (Hope) Maloney; sisters-in-law, Elizabeth (Robert) Hogan and Carol Maloney as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gary, three brothers, three sisters, two nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
    Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 N. Tenth Street, De Pere, with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. to end the evening. Visitation will continue after 10 a.m. Saturday at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, Ashwaubenon, until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. with Fr. John Becker officiating.     The daughter of the late Howard and Elizabeth Maloney married the love of her life, Roy Berken, May 31, 1948. Together they adopted and raised 3 children: Gary, Joel and Belle.

    Mary had a passion for African violets, rummage sales, a challenging game of bridge and always welcomed a spirited game of cribbage with Roy. When fishing day came, she often had the first catch of the day.

    Mary is survived by a son, Joel (Debra) Berken of Green Bay; daughter, Belle East of Fallbrook, CA and grandchildren: Kaitlyn and Krista Berken of Green Bay and Trevor and Miles East of Fallbrook, CA. She is further survived by a brother, Gerald (Hope) Maloney and sister-in-law, Carol Maloney along with many nieces, nephews and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy; son, Gary; brother, Patrick Maloney; sister, Elizabeth Hogan; brothers-in-law and sister-in law.
