    Age 20, died of injuries sustained in an automobile accident at 2:30 a.m. Sunday. He was born April 10, 1957 in Appleton. He graduated from Appleton West High School class of 1975. He was an Eagle Scout with Troop No 607 of the V.F.W. He was also an apprentice electrician at the Fox Valley Technical School and was employed by the O.B. Electric Company, Neenah. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church.

    Survivors include his parents; Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Golden, Appleton; a sister; Miss Peggy Ellen, at home; his maternal grandmother; Mrs. Martha Weyenberg, Appleton; and his paternal grandmother; Mrs. Myrtle Golden, Kaukauna.

    The complete funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Pius X Catholic Church with the Rev. David Barrett officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Brettschneider-Tretten Funeral Home from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday and after 8:30 a.m. Thursday until the time the cortege leaves for the church.
    The rosary will be prayed at 8 Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established in his name.

  • Note: Lucille "Ceil" Mader, completed her life here on earth on August 10, 2010, at the age of 96. She had been a resident of the Ridgeview Highlands Circle Senior Housing Complex in Grand Chute for 16 years. She was born October 7, 1913, in Appleton, WI, to George J. and Salina (Piette) Barrett. After Salina died early in Lucille's childhood, George married Julia Aldrich. Lucille graduated from St. Mary Springs Academy, Fond du Lac, and attended UW-Milwaukee. She married Charles C. Mader on June 20, 1935, at St. Therese Catholic Church, Appleton. They had four children, sharing 35 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1970. Ceil was employed by Zwicker Knitting Mills, retiring as a supervisor, after 26 years. She loved to travel, enjoyed playing cards, Friday night fish fry, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and many memorable years at the cottage she and her husband built on Moshawquit Lake. One of the things she will be remembered for was her love of sports, especially the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers and the Badgers.

    Ceil is survived by her children: Julia "Judy" (James) Ebben; Georgianna "Georgie" Pankratz, Appleton; Louis (Deborah) Mader, Kansas; daughter-in-law Leann Mader, Appleton; and a dear former daughter-in-law Donna (Merrill) Mader, Kansas; three sisters-in-law: Irene Langenberg, Combined Locks; Marge Foss, Washington; Mildred Mader, Madison. She was the cherished grandmother of 15 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, and 9 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and godchildren. Ceil also had many personal friends, of which included her very special card playing friends, Arlene Jochman, the late Rosie Callan and the late Luella Van Ooyen and Doris Vander Velden being her longtime valued friend and also the Ridgeview Tuesday card players.

    Lucille was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Charlie; her son; Charles "Chuck" "Skip" Mader, son-in-law James Pankratz, brother, Ronald Barrett; sister, Frances (Barrett) Forster; a cherished former daughter-in-law Janice (Voigt) Mader; three great-grandchildren; father- and mother-in-law: Henry and Mary Mader; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and loved ones.

    Lucille was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. A Mass of Resurrection for Lucille will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH (410 W. Lawrence St.) with Fr. Larry Abler officiating. Burial will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the Church.

    In lieu of flowers, per Ceil's request, memorials to the American Cancer Society, MS, Spina Bifida or Diabetes are appreciated. A special thanks to her longtime physician, Dr. John Elisberg, Deacon CF, the Heartland Hospice team, Alma, Sam, Sister Ruth and a hospice volunteer friend Jean Mauthe. Also another special thanks to The Island Shores staff for their compassion and care for our mother.

  • Note: Cycle Accident Kills Soldier From Appleton. PFC Anthony Eckes Apparently Misses Curve in Tennessee. PFC Anthony Joseph Eckes, 20, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Eckes, 210 S. Pierce St., Appleton, was killed in a motorcycle accident in Clarkesville, Tenn., over the weekend, it was learned today. Authroriies said Eckes, a paratrooper stationed at Ft. Campbell, Ky., was last seen by fellow soldiers at the Fort Friday. A search was begun for Eckes when he failed to report for duty Saturday morning. His body was found behind a pile of land fill within the Clarksville city limits where it could not be seen by passing motorists. Two unidentified fishermen found the body and notified police. Dr. D.R. Shipley, coroner of the Tennessee county in which the accident happened said Eckes died late Friday or early SAturday. Police said the motorcycle apparently missed a curve, shot over the mound of dirt and crashed. Medical officials at Ft. Campbell, where the body was taken for an autopsy, listed the cause of death as severe head injuries. In addition to his parents Eckes is survived by one brother, Russell, two sisters, Carol and Rosemary, and his grandparents. Funeral services are incomplete.

    Anthony J. Eckes, Jr., 210 S. Pierce Ave. Age 20, passed away over the weekend in Clarksville, Tenn. He was born July 10, 1943 in Appleton and attended the Appleton High School. He was serving in the armed forces at the time of his death. Anthony is survived by his parents. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Eckes Sr.; two sisters, Miss Carole and Miss Rosemary; one brother, Russell, all at home, his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Nick Eckes, Appleton. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ellenbecker Funeral Home after 2 p.m. Friday. Rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

    Rosella (Sally) De Groot was born on April 7, 1918, in LeRoy, WI; she married Robert De Groot on October 6, 1943. Sally and Robert had five children. Three survive: Gemma (Doug) Fickess, Fulton, MO; Pauline Beaty, Roy, UT; and Mary De Groot, Madison, WI. Sally was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 1962, her son Peter in 2002 (survived by her loving daughter-in-law Corinne De Groot) and daughter Wanda Warner, (survived by her loving son-in-law Richard Warner), in 2011. Sally is also survived by five grandchildren: Rob De Groot (Julia) of New London, Brian De Groot of New London, Aaron Page of Fulton, MO, Brad Warnock (Sherri) of Germany, and Andrew Warner (Kelly) of New York City; five great grandchildren Amanda Ludwig, Rylee and Kaden Page, Gwen Sturgis, and James Warner, and two great-great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Seth Ludwig.

    Rosella was one of thirteen children born to Henry and Magdelene Eilbes. Three siblings survive--Jerry (Pat) Eilbes, of Brownsville, Colletta Smith of Lake Mills, and Valeria Straub of Campbellsport. She was preceded in death by her siblings Roman, Richard, Robert, Melvin, Ambrose, Alvin, Edward, Armella, and Grace.

    Sally was a life-long homemaker who loved taking care of her family; she especially enjoyed her grandchildren and the "greats."

    She loved gardening, and was widely known and praised for her beautiful roses. Sally took her roses to many in the neighborhood who needed comforting, a smile, or just a friend.

    As was typical of many females of her generation, Sally did not have a formal education past the eighth grade. So it was with great pride that she announced a few years ago that she had completed her GED. She never told anyone she was doing this, but we were thrilled for her, and proud.

    Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday January 11, 2014 at ST. THOMAS MORE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 1810 N McDonald, Appleton, with Fr. Robert Vandenberg officiating. Visitation will be at the church on Saturday beginning at 10:00 until 10:45 AM. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

    The family wishes to especially thank the staff of both Living Tree Estates of Greenville, and Southern Care Hospice for their excellent care of Sally these last few years, and to thank Sally's daughter-in-law Corinne De Groot for providing the care of a daughter many times over.

    Memorials in Sally's name can be made to St. Thomas More, to the Living Tree Estates, or to the charity of one's choice .

  • Note: Margaret M. (Wiedenhaupt) Harke, Kimberly, age 96, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, February 20, 2011, at Parkside Care Center. She was born on May 16, 1914, in the Town of Buchanan to the late John and Ida (Hupfauf) Wiedenhaupt. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church. On September 29, 1934, she married Fred Harke at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Appleton. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1984. Margaret was a founding member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in 1937 and an honorary member of their Christian Women's Society and other church organizations.

    Margaret is survived by three sons: Roger (Rose) Harke, John (Alice) Harke and David (Marilyn) Harke; daughter, Judy (David) Williamson; 14 grandchildren: Ron, Mark, Paul, Lee, Lisa and Johnny, Sadie Lee, Lucas and Abby; Sara, Molly, Brad, Laura and Fred; 28 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Bernice Arps and Grace Dercks; and many nieces and nephews.

    She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; four brothers and their wives: Ervin (Millie), Victor (Gert), Chuck (Hilda) and Howard; and two brothers-in-law: John Dercks and Gilbert Arps.

    Christian services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, February 24, 2011, at MT. CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH, N8728 S. Coop Rd., Menasha (South on Hwy. N, right on Woodland Dr., before Hwy. 10 roundabout, left on S. Coop Rd.) with Rev. Ronald Szep officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Thursday from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Appleton. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church would be greatly appreciated.

    Grace was blessed by her Lord during her life and now she has received the greatest blessing God has given her, life in heaven. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Appleton. Grace K. (Wiedenhaupt) Dercks, age 99, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 3 at St. Paul's Home in Kaukauna.

    Grace was born December 29, 1916, in the town of Buchanan, growing up on the family farm, the daughter of the late John and Eda (Hupfauf) Wiedenhaupt. She was united in marriage to John Dercks on December 29, 1945. John preceded her in death on May 11, 1987.

    Grace attended Lone Hickory Grade School, town of Buchanan, Kimberly High School, and was a graduate of the class of 1934. She was a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Menasha. She was a member of the Ladies Aid, the Altar Guild, the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society, and the Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W.

    Survivors include a daugher, Mary K. (Doug) Gosse; a son, Jeffrey J. (Pam) Dercks; grandsons: Ryan (Vera) Gosse, Jason Gosse, and Dan (Angela) Zeman; and great-grandchildren: Miette Grace, Claire Grace, and Alex John. She is further survived by her sister, Bernice Arps, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

    In addition to her husband, John, and her parents, Grace was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Lois Ann; four brothers: Ervin (Mildred), Victor (Gertrude), Harold (Hilda), and Howard; one sister, Margaret (Fred) Harke; brother-in-law, Gilbert Arps; also on John's side, Richard (Delphine) Dercks, Margaret (Martin) Wildenberg, and Helen (Henry) Haupt.

    Special to Grace were the many travels that she took with her husband, family, and friends.

    Christian services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, 2016, at MT. CALVARY LUTHERAN CHURCH N8728 S. Coop Rd., Menasha (from Hwy N. west on Woodland Dr., south on S. Coop Rd.) with Pastor Jesse Johnston officiating. A time of visitation wil be held on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery, Appleton.     Arps, Gilbert H. "Gib"


    Gilbert Arps, 96, Kaukauna, was called to the hands of the Lord on Friday, Oct. 30, 2009. He was surrounded by his loving family when he was called home. Gib was born near Shiocton on June 16, 1913, son of the late Henry and Olga (Hildebrandt) Arps. He graduated from the Kaukauna High School in 1931 and on Nov. 13, 1941, he married his sweetheart, the former Bernice Wiedenhaupt.

    Gib served his country faithfully during and after World War II as a member of the United States Army. He was a member of the American Legion Post #41, the Electric City VFW Post #3319 and the 40 et 8, where he was also Chef De'Gare. For over 40 years, Gilbert "Granny" worked at Thilmany Pulp and Paper in Kaukauna.

    He enjoyed working with wood, making gifts for family and friends. Gilbert will also be remembered as being a loving husband, father and grandfather who loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dear to him was his lifelong faithful membership at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Kaukauna.

    Gib is survived by his loving wife, Bernice Arps, Kaukauna; three sons, Kenneth (Jean) Arps, Freedom; Karl (Bonnie) Arps, Hortonville; and Kirk (Paula Winarski) Arps, Kaukauna; four grandchildren, Christopher (Sarah) Arps, Omro; Kelly (Tim) Hanson, Kaukauna; Kerry (Steve) Ebben, Combined Locks; and Bob (Melissa) Arps, Francis Creek; eight great-grandchildren, William, Collin and Lillian Arps; Matthew and Allison Hanson; Maya and Kyle Ebben; and baby Arps, who will join the family in April; two sisters, Ruth Wier and Leatrice (John) Bowman, both of Kaukauna; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Harke, Kimberly; and Grace Dercks, Kaukauna.

    Gib was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters, Mildred Schmidt, Wilma Rausch, Beulah Jensch, Melvin Arps and Kenneth Arps.

    The Christian Funeral for Gib will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009, at TRINITY EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 804 Grignon Street in Kaukauna, with the Rev. Mark Luetzow officiating. Entombment will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday afternoon from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Gilbert's name.

    The family would like to offer their thanks to the special men and women, especially his granddaughter, Kelly, who took such great care of Gib in the Cardiac Care Unit on 2South at Appleton Medical Center. You will always be in our thoughts and prayers.
