  • Note: Mary Jane Rice-Van Lyssel, age 92 of Appleton, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton. She was born on October 27, 1922 in Kaukauna, the daughter of Cornelius and Ella (Krueger) Giesbers.

    Jane lived in Kaukauna until she was 11, and then moved to Appleton with her family, where she later graduated with the Appleton High School class of 1940. Following high school, she then attended Technical School where she took tailoring classes.

    In 1943, Jane married Warren Rice. Warren passed away in 1979. She then married George Van Lyssel in 1998, and he preceded her in death in 2006.



    Jane worked for Sear's Men's Wear, and later for Gimbels, Marshall Fields and Dayton's, retiring in 1993, after doing alterations for 34 years. She loved the work she did she further enjoyed her customers and spending time around people. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Jane loved spending time with her family and traveling. Jane will always be remembered for having a positive word for everyone she came in contact with.

    Jane is survived by her sons, Jeff (Bev) Rice of Greenville and Russell (Heidi) Rice of Appleton; daughter-in-law, Jenny Rice of Freedom; grandchildren, Jeremy (Tiffany), Ben (Gwen), Andy, Matthew (Jamie), Amanda (Amro), Michelle (Matthew); and great- grandchildren, Lauren, Nathan, Jaden, Elias, Jacob and Hannah Mahlock, Michael and Jenna Rice and Crystal Berres. She is further survived by her step-children, George Van Lyssel and Sandy Day, and close friend of 29 years, Liz Hopfensperger. In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husbands, Warren Rice and George Van Lyssel; daughter, Constance Rice; son, Daniel Rice; and sisters, May Johnson and Ruth Bestler.

    Family and friends may call from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m., on Thursday, April 30, 2015, at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette Street, Appleton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m., in the church, with Father Thomas J. Farrell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park.

    Bartels, Norman "Socks"
    Norman Bartels, "Socks", Kaukauna, age 80, passed away on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at Parkside Care Center in Little Chute. He was born April 1, 1928, to the late William and Ruth (Kessler) Bartels. Norman retired from The Bowling Bar in Kaukauna following several years of employment.
    He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, John and Flora Bartels, Freedom, numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
    He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby, two brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert (Esther) and Donald (Shirley).
    Norman's Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 14, 2008, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends will be received on Thursday at Church from 9 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.     Pieters, Elizabeth A. "Betty"


    Betty Pieters, 86, passed away at her home in Kaukauna, on Friday, Sept. 11, 2009. She was born on April 7, 1923, in Kaukauna, to the late Henry and Rose (Hoks) Maes. Betty married Victor Pieters on May 29, 1943, in Monroe, La. He preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1998. She was a bookkeeper at Tuttle Press in Appleton for many years.

    Betty enjoyed the time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was also an avid sports fan, enjoyed embroidery and was a lifelong member of Holy Cross Catholic Church. Betty wintered in Arizona in her later years.

    Survivors include her daughters, Rose (Jim) Hooyman, Sun Lakes, Ariz.; Jeannie (Gerry) Ebben, Kaukauna; Tess (Bobby) Martin, Greenleaf; her sons, Joe (Gloria) Pieters, Boyceville, Wis.; and Tom (Debi) Pieters, Kaukauna; her 22 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and great-great-grandson; her brothers, Paul (Margaret) Maes, Seabrook, Texas; John (Sharon) Maes, Tacoma, Wash.; and Daniel (Jeannie) Maes, Reed Springs, Mo.; her sisters, Marie Reybrock, Little Chute; and Joan Fahl, Little Chute; her sister-in-law, Bernice Maes, Kaukauna; and her brother-in-law, Jim (Doris) Vanden Heuvel, Greenleaf. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Betty was preceded in death by her son, Bill Pieters; her sister, Dorothy Vanden Heuvel; her brother, Henry Maes, Jr; her brothers-in-law, Norman Reybrock, Matthew Hopfensperger, Werner Fahl and Francis (Lee) Pieters; and three grandchildren and one great-grandson.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 12 NOON, on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2009, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.

    A memorial has been established in her name.

  • Note: Betty (Verfurth) Niesen, age 94 of Kaukauna, died at her home on April 19, 2016. She was born in Kaukauna on February 7, 1922, daughter of the late Matt and Stella (Fischer) Verfurth. Betty graduated from the Kaukauna High School and also graduated from Bowlby's Business College in Appleton. On March 16, 1944, she married Robert Niesen; he preceded her in death in 1998. Betty was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church (St. Katharine Drexel) in Kaukauna.

    She is survived by six children: Bob (Dianna) Niesen of Kiel; Bill (Donna) Niesen of Minocqua; Pat Niesen of Yuma, Arizona; Peggy Niesen of Yuma, Arizona; Joann Stephens of Appleton; and Sue (Dave) Popp of Neenah; thirteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; thirteen great-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister: Jane Voet of Albuquerque, New Mexico; a brother: Richard (Catherine) Verfurth of King; a brother-in-law: Wayne Malchow of Neenah, as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and special friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Robert, sons Donald and John, a sister Mary Malchow, a brother-in-law Robert Voet, and a granddaughter Anne Niesen.

    The funeral liturgy for Betty will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 at ST. KATHARINE DREXEL PARISH - ST. MARY'S CHURCH, 119 W. 7th Street in Kaukauna, with Fr. Jerry Pastors officiating. Interment will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to gather at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of the service.

    Betty enjoyed life, her friends, but the thing most dear to her was time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

  • Note: Ethel M. (Schreurs) Femal, Age 85, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at Parkside Care Center. Ethel was born on September 26, 1926 in Wrightstown, Wisconsin the daughter of the late John and Agnes M. (Gerrits) Schreurs. She grew up in Wrightstown, graduated from Wrightstown High in 1944 and married Clifford R. Femal on October 10, 1947. Ethel was a devoted mother and wife and with Cliff raised three children in Kaukauna. She worked for short periods at the Woolen Mill in Appleton and at Kaukauna Klub Cheese. She liked to garden and put a little love in all the fruit and vegetables she canned and the food she prepared. Ethel was a longtime member of Holy Cross Church and the Fox Valley Golf Club. She enjoyed golf, fishing, playing cards and was an avid Packer fan.

    Ethel is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Paul) Tanoura, Honokaa, Hawaii and his children, Kristian and January; a son, John (Julie) Femal, Eugene, Oregon and their two childen, Brenden and Claire Femal; a granddaughter, Nicole (Femal) Earle, Augusta, Georgia; and great granddaughter, Courtney Earle; four step great grandchildren, Hayley, Kristina, Isaac and Trevor, all of Hawaii; her sister, Mary Jane Johnson and five in-laws, Lorraine Schreurs, Clayton McCabe, Robert Geenen, Bill Baldwin and LaVerne Femal.

    Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Femal, a son, Daniel Femal, a brother, Robert Schreurs, and nine in-laws, Harry and Phelan Femal, Helen (Pat) McCabe, Kathleen McCabe, Mary Ellen (Don) Hoh, Sally Geenen and Grace Baldwin.

    A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 22 at HOLY CROSS CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna with Fr. Jim Vanden Hogen officiating. Family will receive friends and family at a dinner to follow in Friendship Hall.,
