  • Note: PIERRE PARENT AND JEANNE BADEAU: PIONEERS OF NEW FRANCE
    by
    GUY PARENT
In 1645, the French authorities realized that the settlement of emigrants to New France was progressing
too slowly. The last fur trading company responsible for bringing new settlers, the Compagnie des
Cents-Associés (the Company of One Hundred Associates) had not fulfilled its obligations. A new
organization called the Communauté des Habitants (Community of Inhabitants) was given the task to
populate New France. In return it had the monopoly on the fur trade and the responsibility to administer
the new country. Soon, however, the Communauté des Habitants ran into serious financial problems,
primarily due to bad administration of funds and the costly Iroquois wars. In 1651 they stopped taking
new settlers. Pierre Parent would have landed on North American soil during these years of our
    history.
    Pierre Parent’s origins
Compared to their British counterparts, the French were not particularly successful in such colonization
efforts. During its 150 years as a French colony, no more than 10,000 immigrated to New-France.
Almost 4,000 of these were engagés like Pierre Parent, who was among the early pioneers. Travel by
sea was arduous, subject to a variety of hazards, including inclement weather, piracy, and the threat of
illness to both crew and passengers. Because navigation of the time used dead reckoning, damage to
ships (including shipwrecks) proved a risk. The voyage between the two continents lasted 62 days, on
average, although crossings in the mid-1600s ranged from 35 to 117 days. Space on board the
transportation ships was restricted due to their small size (no larger than 200 tonnes in the 17th century,
with many well under that). Accommodations were cramped and bare bones, bedding was often soggy,
and meals were typically cold. Yet despite the dangers and perils of the sea, most of the sailors and
    passengers arrived safely.
