John Cory

  • Death: John Cory died on August 8, 1768 in Westfield, Union Co, New Jersey.
  • Note: John was born on the farm near Westfield in Elizabethtown, NJ in 1703. At the death of his father he became the owner of the CORY farm that his father had gave him in his will made 1720 and proved in 1723. John and Martha lived on the farm where all the children were born. John was for many years an Elder in the 1st Presbyterian Church at Westfield. The following was taken from their tombstones in the cemetery at Westfield. "Here lieth the body of Mr. John Cory who departed Aug ye 8th 1768 in the 65th yr of his life" and beside him " here lieth the body of Martha, wife of Mr. John Cory who departed this life Sept ye 24, 1777 in the 71st year of her life" The Will of John Cory shows the date of Oct 29, 1765 proved Aug 26 1768. He willed the 63 acre home farm to son David, mentions wife Martha, sons, John (eldest) Jacob, Abner, David, brother Elnathan, Father John Cory (deceased), daughters Hannah, Phoebe, Sarah, and Rachel. Executors sons Jacob and Abner.

  • Note: John's will dated 3 March 1720 was filed at Taunton, Ma . Proved at Elizabethtown, NJ 7 January 1723. Appoints his wife Priscilla as Executrix, mentions sons Elnathan, John, Joseph and Benjamin. Daughters Mary and Hannah. Recorded Book Liber A of Wills Page 282 Essex Co NJ. He left Huntington after 1696 and prior to 1700. Records show that John bought 63 acres of land from David Watkins in 1719 about 2.5 miles from Westfield. He resided on that land until his death in 1723. By his Will he conveyed that land to John IV his son. His wife Priscilla's Will, was dated 6 March 1722 recorded Book Liber A of wills page 269 Essex Co NJ proved 17 December 1723. Mentions son Elnathan, daughters Anna Cory, Mary (Cory) Hampton, Others, Son-in-law Andrew Hampton. Witnesses, Anthony Little, Mary and William Strayhom. John III received the greate booke from his father and passed it on to his son Elnathan.

  • Death: John Cory died on October 20, 1685, at age 46, in Huntington, Suffolk Co, New York.
  • Note: John removed to Huntington, L.I. about 1660. On July 7, 1663 he bought a lot at Huntington for a home. He was granted land there in 1668, 1681 and 1682. He was at one time one of the owners of farm number nine of ten farms. He is said to be a Quaker, a man of considerable importance in Huntington, being town clerk, arbitrator, recorder, etc. His Will dated 25 January 1686 was proved 14 October 1702 Inventory of his personal property was 82 pounds 10 shillings. The Greate Booke was passed on to John III.

  • Note: Just where John I came from, in the old world, as of the publication date of the Second Edition of "Corys Of America", has not been proven satisfactorily or strong enough to say at this time. He may have arrived in America on the Ship Planter. Some of the first researchers of the Cory Genealogy tried to prove that he came from Bramerton Hall near Norwich, England. It is also believed that he came to America about 1637. He may have lived in Salem, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The latest theory is that he was the John Cory that was in Rhode Island and left under strange circumstances. Also that he may have been the father of William of Portsmouth. We believe that John was one of the men who assisted John Youngs on October 21 1640 in the organization of the First (Presbyterian) Church at Southold, LI., New York. John Cory is mentioned as being from Southold and as the Whale Commissioner 7 March 1644. The Will of John CORY I, dated 1 February 1685. Proved 2 October 1685. I give to Son John, Iron Kettle, Great Bible, Chest and its contents, a Cloke and halfe a debt of 12 pounds , half my Weaving Takell, my Bell Mette Skillet, Beds Rugs and Bolsters..I give my son Jacob halfe my Land in Ye Oyster ponds, Upper Neck, to be paid by son Abraham, 2 Cows, halfe my Sheep, Weaving Cloaths and halfe my Weaving Takell, halfe my Husbandry Tools, with halfe my Lumber and 14 acres of Land to his son..To son Abraham my lot in Ye Oyster Ponds, upper Neck, he paying halfe ye price to his brother Isaac, halfe my Sheep, a debt of 12 pounds, halfe my Husbandry Tools and halfe lumber.. Abraham my son to pay all my debts and to pay his brother Isaac 5 Shillings and to satisfy William Tuthill for what trouble he is at about, my will.. To Daughter Hannah Lot by Mill and her Daughter Hannah an Iron pot and one Heifer.. Daughter Abigail an Iron pot, 1 Iron Kettle, Blankets and pillows, chest and whats in it.

    Just where John I came from, in the old world, as of now, can not be proven satisfactorily or strong enough to say at this time.
