  • Note: Kimberly Veteran Dies When Boy, 3, Discharges Gun
Henry Langenberg, Jr., Killed Saturday by Shotgun Blast
A 3-year-old boy who was cleaning his popgun while his step-father cleaned a rifle, accidentally discharged a shotgun and killed Henry W. Langenberg, Jr., 28, 403 N. Sidney street, Kimberly, almost instantly early Saturday evening, according to Sheriff Andrew J. Schiltz.
Langenberg, a mail carrier in Kimberly, died when a blast from a 16-gauge shotgun entered his heart. Jeffrey Ahlquist, stepson of the dead man, sobbed out the story that "I shot my daddy". The tragedy occured in the kitchen of the Langenberg home according to Undersherriff Lyman B. Clark, who conducted the investigation.
Langenberg's wife, Joan, and his mother, Mrs. Mary Langenberg, were upstairs in the home when the shotgun discharged, Clark said. They told Clark that they heard a noise, and then heart Langenberg say, "oh Jeff". Clark said the shotgun had been lying on the table, with the muzzle only 12 or 14 inches from Langenberg, when the boy accidentally pulled the trigger and the gun discharged.
Coroner Leslie Holzer said no inquest will be held.
Langenberg's mother and wife told Clark that Langenberg had taken the rifle from the basement to clean it and also had brought down the shotgun from upstairs. Langenberg had told Jeffrey to get his popgun and he could clean that while he cleaned the other gun, Clark related.
    Mother Summons Help
The woman told Clark that the boy said, "Oh, I shot my daddy". The dead man's wife tried to stop the bleeding while his mother summoned help. A Kimberly physician was called and he notified the sheriff's department.
Clark said the boy told him, "I shot him with the big gun. The one in the case. It was on the table. I pulled the trigger." The woman told clark that the shotgun had been in a case when Langenberg took it from the upstairs to the kitchen.
Langenberg was one of several persons who were stabbed by a berserk man in Texas while the Kimberly man was stationed there in the armed services during the war, Clark said. At that time, doctors (article cut off here.)
