    Powers, Sherman J. "Jim"
Sherman J. "Jim" Powers, of Denton, Texas, age 85, passed away after a short illness on Friday, June 30, 2006, in Denton, Texas. Jim was born April 4, 1921, to William and Thelma Powers in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. He attended Kaukauna Public Schools. He met and married Maydelle Parker of Los Angeles, CA in 1942. She passed away in November, 1976. He served his country during World War II and was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946.

On May 19, 1984, he married Pat Thomas of Denton. As the owner of Jim Powers' Motors, he became known as the "flag man" because of his fight before the City Council to fly the American Flag on the antennae of the vehicles on his lot. As a full blooded Irishman, Jim was full of blarney and loved to tell wonderful stories-both fact and fiction. He captivated the attention of his grandchildren with hours and hours of stories about "the little people" (Leprechauns). Jim loved to dance and he and Pat spent many good times doing so. Possessing a beautiful, tenor voice, Jim enjoyed singing Irish songs at any gathering, particularly on St. Patrick's Day, his favorite day of the year. Jim's presence always filled the room with laughter. He also enjoyed the game of poker and hosted a weekly game with his close friends. Jim was dearly loved by all his family and friends and will be deeply missed.

Jim is survived by Pat Powers of Denton, TX, his wife of 22 years; two brothers: Richard Powers and wife Marie, and Wilfred Powers, all of Appleton; former sister-in-law Olive Newman and husband Leon and former brother-in-law Robert Parker, all of CA; three daughters: Shannon Powers and Debbie Guidry of New Orleans, LA; Vicki Berg and husband Earl of Antioch, CA; three sons: Gary Thomas and wife Gaye of Denton, TX; Richard Thomas and friend Lesa Cochran of San Antonio, TX; Dave Thomas and friend Kathleen McCulloch of Mesquite, TX; four grandchildren: Amy Thomas-Varner and husband Matt Varner of Frisco, TX ; Desiree Thomas Phillips of Pflugerville, TX; and Kyle and David Berg of CA.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, sister Lorraine Damro, sister-in-law Joannie Powers, and his beloved Pekingese pets, Chang and Mindy.

It was Jim's wish to be cremated and buried next to his sister. Jim's Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 12, 2006, at ST. MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 119 West Seventh Street, Kaukauna. Friends will be received at Church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Inurnment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those wishing to make contributions, do so to their favorite charity, the American Lung Association or the American Heart Association.
