  • Note: Gerald G. Bries, 81, of Green Bay, passed away on Saturday, September 15, 2012. He was born on September 20, 1931 to the late Albert and Mary (Vandehey) Bries. Gerald served in the United States Navy as a submariner on the USS Sirago Submarine. He married Marcie Klarkowski on August 29, 1953 at SS Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church. Gerald was employed by FMC Machine Shop and part-time as a homebuilder for Kaster Construction. He was an avid hunter, Packer fan and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

    Survivors include his daughter, Debra Bries; his son, Jeffrey (Robin Madlem) Bries; 3 grandchildren, Hayden, Mason and Britney; 2 step-grandchildren, Kolton and Dylan; brother, Byron (Katherine) Bries; friend, Jacque Steeno.

    He was preceded in death by his wife Marcie; 7 brothers and a sister.

    Friends may call at Nativity of Our Lord Catholic Church, 2270 S. Oneida St. from 9:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 19. Memorial service 11:00 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. John Harper officiating. Burial in the Allouez Catholic Cemetery. Online condolences may be expressed to the Bries family at www.prokowall.com.

    Madison - Byron J. Bries, age 85 passed away at Agrace Hospice on Friday, December 5, 2014 with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 27, 1929 the son of, Albert and Mary (Vandehey) Bries in Wrightstown, Wisconsin. Byron proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1946 to 1950. On June 17, 1950, he was united in marriage to Kathleen F. Zilisch. Together they resided for many years in the Green Bay area until they moved their family to Madison where Byron was an owner and operator of the Ramada Inn until his retirement. Byron was a devoted catholic and member of St. Bernard Catholic Church in Madison. He took enormous pride in his family, particularly his grandchildren. As a family, they camped, fished and spent many family gatherings playing cards and board games together. Byron loved nothing more than being around his family and until health challenges limited him, made every effort to attend the grandchildren's school, sporting and music events. In later years, Byron and Kathleen enjoyed wintering in Florida. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren until his final moment of life.

    Byron is survived by his wife of 64 years; Kathleen, three daughters; Gail (Pat) Kohn, Julie Flugum, Joan (Stuart) Clifcorn, six grandchildren; Melissa (Brett) McLain, James Kohn, Sara (Brooks Wilcox) Flugum, Kristin Flugum, Cory Clifcorn and Amber Clifcorn as well as five great grandchildren.

    He was preceded in death by his first born daughter; Sheryl and four other infant daughters and sons, his parents, and eight siblings; Ollie, Jack, Norb, Sherman, Donald, Bobby, Gerald, and Mildred. Byron was also preceded in death by his in-laws, Harry and Valerian Zilisch who he loved like they were his own parents.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Ave., Madison on Saturday, December 13, 2014 at 12 Noon with Father Michael Radowicz presiding. Military honors will conclude Mass at church on Saturday. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday, December 13, 2014 from 10:00 am until the time of Mass. Graveside services will be held at a later date at All Saints Catholic Cemetery in Denmark, WI.

    The family would like to extend a special thank you to Richelle Fields and the staff at Meriter Wisconsin Heart, the ER staff and 8th Floor staff at Meriter Hospital, Dr. Mihai Teodorescu and the UW Health East Geriatric Clinic staff, and Agrace Hospice Inpatient Unit for all their compassion, love and care given to Byron and his family throughout this difficult time.

    Madison - Kathleen Frances "Kathy" Bries, age 87, passed away in her home on Monday, February 13, 2017 surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 24, 1929 in Denmark, Wisconsin, the daughter of Valerian (Schommer) and Harry Zilisch. She was united in marriage on June 17, 1950 to Byron Joseph Bries in Green Bay, Wisconsin where they resided together for many years until they moved their family to Madison in 1966. In their retirement years, Kathy and Byron enjoyed being snowbirds, wintering in Florida until health challenges kept them close to home.

    Kathy was a faithful Catholic and member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. She looked forward to planting flowers in her yard each spring, spending summers camping with the kids and grandkids, annual Christmas break vacation trips to Florida with the family, and years of weekend football parties shared with friends. Kathy felt blessed to have raised her family in a neighborhood filled with wonderful, caring people whom she considered beloved friends to this day. She had a kind and courageous heart and devoted many years as caregiver for her parents and husband Byron through their life limiting illnesses.

    Kathy was devoted to her family and took enormous pride in her home, children and grandchildren. She always made herself available to help out, frequently taking the grandkids to medical appointments or sports practice and made special effort to attend their many school programs, music and sporting events. Kathy lived for the frequent gatherings her family shared. She was known as the family "card shark" and loved nothing more than playing a good game of Fascination or Kings Corner, board games, decorating Christmas cookies, watching movies and old TV reruns or just sharing a home cooked meal and eating cake! She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren until her final moments of life.

    Kathy touched many hearts and will be dearly missed by all whom knew and loved her.

    Kathy is survived by her three daughters; Gail (Pat) Kohn, Julie Flugum and Joan (Stuart) Clifcorn all of Madison, six grandchildren; Melissa (Brett) McLain, James Kohn, Cory Clifcorn, Amber Clifcorn, Sara (fiancé Brooks Wilcox) Flugum and Kristin Flugum and six great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Byron, first born daughter Sheryl, four infant sons and daughters and brother Richard.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. BERNARD CATHOLIC CHURCH, 2450 Atwood Avenue, Madison on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 12 Noon with Father Michael Radowicz presiding. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10:00 am until the time of Mass. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 11:30 am at All Saints Cemetery in Denmark, Wisconsin.

    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in memory of Kathy to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 East Cheryl Parkway, Fitchburg, WI 53711.

  • Note: Sherman M. Bries, age 78, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at St. Marys Hospital. He was born on April 25, 1926, in Wrightstown, the son of Albert and Mary (Vandehey) Bries. Sherman served his country in the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific Theater. He received many commendational honors. Sherman excelled in anything he did. He worked as a successful salesman for the Hobart Papermill in Green Bay, as well as for the Kirby Vacuum Cleaner Co., where he owned several Kirby franchises over the years. He then opened his own insurance agency and worked for Old Line Life Insurance where he received many prestigious honors for being top salesman. Sherman enjoyed boating, camping, fishing, hunting and golf. He loved spending time outdoors. He touched many lives. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends, including his wife, Ruth of Cottage Grove; his children, including his daughter, Cindy (Jim) Tomlin of Scottsdale, Ariz., and their daughter, Stephanie Tomlin; his daughter, Sally (Jeff) Bries-Wiggen of Boulder, Colo.; his son, Tom (Sandy) Bries of Fitchburg, and their children, Aaron, Alex and Nicole Bries, Aaron and Brook Dealke, and Trisha Fitzpatrick. He is also survived by his step-daughters, Rene (Karen Larson) Christesen of Dodgeville; and Rise (Karin Wolf) Christesen of Milwaukee; his brothers, Norbert (Dolly) Bries, Byron (Kathy) Bries and Gerald Bries; his sisters-in law, Dorothy, Judy and Tina Bries; many nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Oliver, Donald, Jack and Robert Bries; and by his sister, Mildred Kaster. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at 11 a.m. at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, with full military honors being conducted by the Madison Veterans Firing Squad.     Mildred M. Kaster, 83, formerly of Green Bay, passed away at St. Marys Home in Manitowoc o n Holy Saturday, April 10, 2004. She had been residing in Manitowoc for the past three years . Mildred was born Nov. 19, 1920, in the Town of Lawrence, to the late Albert and Mary (Van D e Hey) Bries. On Dec. 30, 1941, she married Martin S. Kaster. He preceded her in death on Eas ter Sunday, March 30, 1986. Mildred was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Green Bay a nd a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a good Mom with a great sense of humor, an d a friendly, warm smile.

    She is survived by her children, Martin Jay and Debbie, Howard, Wis.; Richard and Nancy Rae , Oneida; Sr. Marsaia, Manitowoc; and Nancy A. Oneida St., from 9:30 un til the time of Mass. Mass of Christian Burial 11 a.m. at the church with the Rev. Len Ever s and the Rev. Jim Hablewitz officiating. Entombment will be in the Allouez Chapel Mausoleum.

She had a free spirit with a passion for life that could not be contained. She will be remembered for her humor, generosity, kindness, compassion, and love of animals. She was a collector of many unique things and memories. She was preceded in death by her parents: Robert Lappen and Janet (Roberts) Lappen and grandparents: Michael and Agnes Lappen and Eugene and Doris Roberts. She is survived by her daughter: Ariel Harp, granddaughter: Audrey Harris, and the love of her life: Todd Ardnt, all of Neenah, brother, Robert Lappen (Rhinelander, sisters, Darlene Bryant (Oshkosh), Debbie (Gene) Kurowski (Ironwood,MI), Doris (Spencer) Gambsky (Oshkosh), several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, many other friends and family. A celebration of life will be held at The Dome, 1338 South Commercial Street, Neenah on November 18th 2017 from 2:00 PM to 7:00PM.
