Biography

  • Birth: Connie Menning was born on June 13, 1940 in Appleton, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Death: She died on August 27, 2015, at age 75.
  • Note: Landis, PhD, Connie M. (Menning)

Connie M. (Menning) Landis, PhD. passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2015, after a yearlong battle with lymphoma cancer. She was born on June 13, 1940, in Appleton, WI, to Robert and Marion Menning.

Connie attended Appleton West High School and Lawrence College (now Lawrence University) in Appleton. After graduating from Lawrence, she taught elementary art in Edgerton and Neenah, WI. In 1968, after experiencing the mountains of the west, she and her husband Bob Landis, whom she had met in Junior High, moved to Billings, MT. There she taught art at Billings West High School. She became a professor at Eastern Montana College in 1978, where she remained until her retirement in 2015. In her long tenure at EMC, now Montana State University Billings (MSUB), she won many teaching awards, earned a PhD. at the University of Wisconsin and became Chair of the Art Department.

Connie Landis will be remembered as a no nonsense women who lived life on her own terms. She was a feminist when that was not a popular position to take. Her husband remembers her as a partner who would hike the wilderness of Alaska and British Columbia, survive and love their experiences in Botswana and settle in Billings, far from her home in Wisconsin. Connie loved to travel and enjoyed trips to the Caribbean, New Zealand, Africa, and Australia. In her later years, Connie traveled throughout Europe with her niece and frequent companion, Kristine Jolivette. Her friends remember her as a person with strong values and inclined to throw a party to celebrate their triumphs. Connie pushed her students to be their best and to carry the torch of art education at all levels. They will remember Connie as the teacher who, along with her demand for excellence, had time for fun and was a bit eccentric. Connie would like to be remembered as a champion of women's rights, an avid environmentalist, the need for art in everyone's life and as a fun loving person.

She is survived by her husband, Bob, Gardiner, MT; sisters, Susan (Chuck) Van Zeeland, Appleton, WI; and Kay (David) Jolivette, Kenilworth, IL; brother-in-law, John (Molly) Landis, and sisters-in-law Ruth (John) Braun and Peggy (Peter) Saecker; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, in-laws, Dr. Ralph and Pearl Landis and brothers-in-law, Chuck Van Zeeland and Peter Saecker.

A celebration of life will be held in Billings, MT on October 10, 2015. A memorial fund is being set up in her name to create a scholarship for students at MSUB. Please send all condolences to 3200 Windemere Lane, Billings, MT 59102.
