Joseph James Roemer

  • Death: Joseph James Roemer died on April 26, 2011, at age 85.
  • Note: Joe Roemer, 85, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2011, at Cherry Meadows. Joe was born in Appleton on May 2, 1925, the son of the late Joseph and Cecilia (Weiss) Roemer. He attended St. Joseph Grade School in Appleton and St. Mary High School in Menasha, where he met Velma "Val" Reimer, his beloved wife of 66 years. They were married in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, at the Army Air Field Chapel during World War II.

    Joe was employed by Wisconsin Telephone Company for 30 years before retiring and enjoying 33 more years of fun. He was a woodcarver, do-it-yourselfer, remodeler, gardener, and enjoyed playing pool with his buddies. He loved to fish at the Lake Winneconne cabin he built with his brother, Casey Roemer. Joe loved music and could play piano, banjo, accordion, and tuba. He also enjoyed Friday night card games surrounded by his family. Joe took the trip of a lifetime last October on the Old Glory Honor Flight with daughter, Jan, traveling as his guardian. He and Val also enjoyed two trips to Germany during retirement to visit relatives.

    Joe will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Val; his four children, Mark (Ellen) Roemer, Oshkosh; Chris (Debbie) Roemer, Appleton; Jan (Tom) McHugh, Neenah; Ellen (Tuffer) Kunz, Neenah; and grandsons, Colin McHugh, Madison; and Casey McHugh, LaCrosse.

    Joe was preceded in death by sisters Hilda VanBoxtel, Isabelle Kilsdonk, Ann Berghuis, Marie Knabenbauer, Rita Laux, and brother Clarence Roemer.

    A Celebration of Joe's Life will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011, at the Whiting Boathouse, 98 Fifth St., Neenah. A memorial fund benefiting Old Glory Honor Flight will be established.

    The family wishes to thank staff at Cherry Meadows and ThedaCare at Home Hospice for their compassionate care.

    Smith, Marian E. (Garvey)


    Marian E. (Garvey) Smith, of Freedom, age 86, passed away at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna on Tuesday, April 21, 2009. She was born in Freedom on June 29, 1922, the second daughter of the late John and Elizabeth (McDaniels) Garvey. On June 29, 1946, she married her husband of 47 years, Eugene Smith. He preceded her in death in 1993. Marian graduated from Freedom High School in 1939 and attended Kaukauna Normal School. She taught in one room school houses throughout the area until her marriage. In the mid 1960s, she earned a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's degree in education from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Marian was an avid traveler. Her travels took her to 49 states, and every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Marian also loved to golf and played in various area leagues.

    Marian had a strong faith in her church. She believed a good education was the key to a fulfilling life.

    Marian is survived by her children: Dave (Nancy) Smith of North Oaks, MN; Don (Kathy) Smith of La Crosse; Dan (Marcia) Smith of Middleton; Mary Delvoye of Menomonee Falls; Tim (Linda) Smith of Appleton; and Ann (Dan) Smith of Colchester, VT; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and sisters: Lillian Heaney and Betty Garvey. Her Sunday night calls will be dearly missed by her family.

    The funeral liturgy will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, April 24, 2009, at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, Freedom, with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Friends will be received at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Burial will be at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Freedom.

    The family extends a very special thank you to the staff at St. Paul Home in Kaukauna for their caring and kindness. They treated Marian like a family member.

    In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Marian's name is being established for the Providence Fund at St. Paul Elder Services and St. Nicholas Elementary School.

  • Note: Beverly M. Kolb, 80, of Freedom, passed away on Sunday June 10, 2012 at Appleton Medical Center. Beverly was born on July 30, 1931 to Otto and Marie (Kronser) Dey in Shawano. She was united in marriage to Frank Kolb on August 28, 1948 at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Shiocton and he preceded her in death in 1995. Beverly retired from the Freedom High School, after 15 years working in the cafeteria. She also assisted Frank in selling vegetables and flowers from his greenhouse. Beverly was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church where she updated the bulletins. She looked forward to Sunday afternoon cards and going out to eat with friends. Beverly also loved attending her grandchildren and great grandchildren's events. Her family was important to her and the time they spent together will always be cherished.

    Beverly is survived by five children; Carol (Russel) Lynch, Appleton, Barb (Pete) Van Wychen, Freedom, Jim Kolb, Freedom, Jack Kolb, Freedom, Jeff (Donna) Kolb, Freedom 15 grandchildren; Amanda (fiancée Anthony Kirsten) Lynch, Rebecca (fiancée Ryan Giordana) Lynch, Joshua Lynch, Dr. Lee (Krissy) Van Wychen, Lori (Corey) Dallmann, Jill (Jarrett) Dawson, Robb Van Handel, Jenny Van Handel, Ryan Kolb, Tyler Kolb, Kelly Kolb, Jessica Kolb, Taylor Kolb, Lacey Kolb, Kelsey Kolb, five great grandchildren; Tremayne Van Handel, Isabelle and Andrew Dawson, Breanna Dallmann, Marcus Van Wychen. She is further survived by a brother Donald (Shirley) Dey, a sister Phyllis Beyer, sisters-in-law; Germaine (Cliff) Corby, Irene (Don) Hues, Mary Lou Fischer, a brother-in-law Ed Belschner, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, a daughter Patty Van Handel, a grandson Marcus Van Wychen, ten brothers and many in-laws.

    The funeral liturgy for Beverly will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 5:00 PM at ST. NICHOLAS CATHOLIC CHURCH, W2037 County Road S, Freedom, with Fr. Dave Hoffman officiating. Interment will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3:00 PM until the time of the Mass at the church.

Survivors included her parents two brothers, Joshua and Austin paternal grandmother, Beverly Konkle, Freedom. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Elmer, and maternal grandparents, George and Patricia Laws. Private family services were held Friday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, Freedom, with Fr. Dennis Ryan officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery. Muehl- Boettcher Funeral Home assisted the family. A special thank you to Fr. Dennis Ryan and Dr. James Gibson and Barb Peters, RN, for all your care and consideration.
