    Age 40, died Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Hospital. He was born October 21, 1940 in Kaukauna. He had been employed at Giddings and Lewis, Kaukauna, as a supervisor. Mr. Schmalz was the secretary for the Police and Fire Commission, Kaukauna, and a member of the HOly Cross Catholic Church. Survivors include his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Schmalz, Kaukauna; two daughters: Kristine and Kari, both of Kaukauna; two sisters and brothers-in-law: Arsella and Paul Strick, Little Chute; Sandy and Gordon Fleming, Kaukauna; seven nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna, with Father Mike Hoffmann officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

  • Note: Sandra L. Hambek, age 74 of Kaukauna, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 10, 2016 in California surrounded by family. Sandy was born in Kaukauna on August 27, 1941. Sandra was an avid knitter and loved to sew. She also enjoyed traveling. Sandra married James Hambek in 1999. Jim and Sandy were blessed to be able to travel and see most of the country together over the last 17 years. They had many great adventures. She enjoyed coming back to Wisconsin to be with her grandchildren and many friends. Cheyenne and Sandy always had the nicest nails in town when she came home. She was a woman of kindness who always put others needs before her own. She spent a lot of time caring for sick people and always made sure that newborn children had a knitted baby blanket.

    She is survived by her sons: Brian (Diane) Fleming of Appleton, and Keith Fleming of Wrightstown. She is survived by her grandchildren: Zackery Fleming of Florida, Damon Fleming of Appleton, Morgin Hyler of Kaukauna, Tyler Fleming of Wrightstown, and Cheyenne Fleming of Kaukauna, and her great-grandchild Catalia Solman of Crandon. She is further survived by three step-daughters Carrie (Bret) Green of California, June Lingdgist of California, Janette Barabara of Florida, and their children.

    She is preceded in death by her husband, James Hambek, her parents, Loyal and Elsie Schmaltz, her brother, Ted, and many good friends.

    Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna at 11 A.M with Father Tom Pomeroy officiating. A time of visitation will take place at 4 P.M. until 6 P.M. on Monday, April 18, 2016 at FARGO FUNERAL HOME, 400 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Kaukauna and on Tuesday from 10 A.M. until the time of mass at church. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery. Online condolences can be expressed at www.wichmannfargo.com.

    Van Dyke, Wilma "Grandma Wimmy"


    Wilma (Janssen) Van Dyke, 95, of Kaukauna, passed away at St. Paul Villa on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Wilma was born on June 22, 1914, in Combined Locks, daughter of the late Daniel C. and Flora (Rowe) Janssen. On July 3, 1937, she married Anthony "Tony" Van Dyke, who died in June of 1974.

    She is survived by her daughter, Jean (John) Mohrfeld, Menomonee Falls; her sons: Daniel (Shirley) Van Dyke, Kimberly; and Br. James Van Dyke, CSC, Chicago; her grandsons: Michael (Sue) Mohrfeld, Andrew (Wendy) Mohrfeld, Christopher (Terri) Mohrfeld; granddaughters: Lisa (Jonathan) Bascue, Lori (Scott) Biese; her step-granddaughter Shelli Roovers; 14 great-grandchildren; her sisters-in-law: Rose Marie Van Dyke and Joan Van Dyke; and her nieces, nephews and cousins.

    Wilma enjoyed her roles as wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She liked to organize activities and outings for younger children, especially her grandchildren. A 1932 graduate of Kaukauna High School, Wilma received her teacher certification through Outagamie County Teacher's College, and did additional course work through the University of Wisconsin. She taught in area grade schools before her marriage and resumed teaching in 1957 at Holy Cross in Kaukauna. At the time of her retirement, she was teaching at St. John, Little Chute. Wilma was a dedicated, enthusiastic and creative teacher who enjoyed helping students develop their minds while broadening their horizons. Music was a lifelong interest, and Wilma played piano from the age of 10. Another strong interest was travel. She often told of her family's trip to Tacoma by car in 1929, and never tired of traveling with family and friends. An avid reader, she remarked that she never would be bored as long as she could read. For most of her life, Wilma was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kaukauna.

    The Funeral Liturgy will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 309 Desnoyer Street, Kaukauna, with Fr. Tom Pomeroy officiating. Friends may call directly at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Kaukauna.

    The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the dedicated staff at St. Paul Villa for their loving care, especially Sally, Peggy, Linda, Cheryl, Kay, Kris, Janet, Sandy and Linda, and her physician, Dr. Paul Russo. They would also like to thank Aunt Rose Marie and her daughters, and her many other visitors and friends who made her happy these past years. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to benefit St. Paul Elder Care Services, Kaukauna.

Jansen, Kaukauna, and Anthony Van Dyke, son of Mrs. Adriana Van Dyke, 820 Oviatt street, Kaukauna, was solemnized at 9 o'clock this morning in Holy Cross church, Kaukauna, the Rev. August Garthaus reading the nuptial mass. Miss Catherine Garvey, Freedom, was maid of honor, Miss Eileen Krueger was bridesmaid, Theodore Van Dyke, brother of the bridegroom, best man, and John Reuter, Kaukauna, an usher. Two cousins of the bridge, Alice Mae Jansen and Florence Brouillard, Combined Locks, were flower girls.

    Joan died peacefully on Friday, August 24, 2001, at her home, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born on December 20, 1928 in Appleton, the daughter of the late Michael and Catherine (Stilp) Kettenhofen. Joan graduated from Appleton High School West in 1946. She was employed for 28 years at Kimberly–Clark Corporation, retiring in 1990 as an executive secretary. Joan is survived by one son, Donald Stranathan, Santa Rosa, California; three daughters, Barbara (Kenneth) Paiser, Appleton; Carol (David) Lendle, Eau Claire; and Ellen (Ken) Kane, Oconomowoc. She is further survived by six grandchildren, Michael and Christa Stranathan, California; Chad Paiser, Menasha; Heather Paiser, Ripon; Heidi Paiser, California; and Laurel Lendle, Eau Claire. In addition she is survived by four step-grandchildren, Shelli Roovers, Appleton, Heather Kane, South Carolina, Kenny and Samantha Kane, New York. She is also survived by a brother, John (Fay) Kettenhofen, Appleton; a sister, Anne (Joseph) Muhlebach, Eagle River and Punta Gorda Florida; a sister-in-law, Maxine Kettenhofen, Appleton; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Robert Kettenhofen; and a sister, Mary Kettenhoften. Joan was a member of St. Pius X Church. She was also a member of Altrusa International of Appleton and a former member of the Appleton Woman’s Club. She was a wonderful mother who brought four children into the world and shared the best of her world with them. She loved her children and gave them great care, strong values and unconditional love. Her children wish to express their sincere thanks to all of her dear friends and other relatives for the support they showed throughout her illness and her life. A special thank you to Dr. Anthony Phillips, Theda Care At Home Hospice, and all of the caring and competent medical and nursing staff that have cared for her these last three years. The Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at ST. PIUS X CATHOLIC CHURCH, 500 West Marquette Street, Appleton, with Fr. Donald Zuleger officiating. Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, August 27 from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m., and again at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
