    Diedrich Absolved of Blame in Death of Urban Vosters

    Youth Came to Death in November as Result of Unavoidable Accident

    An inquest jury last week at Little Chutc absolved Lester Diedrich, Rt. 1, Kaukauna of blame in the traffic death of Urban Vosters, school boy who was killed near Little Chute, November 18, 1940 when struck by a truck driven by Diedrich.

    The virdict reached following the taking of testimony read that the boy came to his death in an unavoidable accident, no negligence on the past of the driver of the truck. The jury finds the driver did everything to avoid the accident. Diedrich testified that he was driving north on 55 when the boy, who was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Vosters, Rt. 4, Appleton, approached the highway from a side road. The boy started to run across the intersection in front of the truck and though Diedrich swerved the machine, he said, the right front end struck the younster.

    Homeward bound from school, 6 year old Urban, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Vosters, Rt. 4, Appleton was killed by a truck about 3:45 yesterday afternoon on Highway 55 about four miles north of Little Chute. The boy was walking along the highway with his sister, Joan and several other pupils of the Fernwood School when according to undersheriff Fred Frank who investigated, he began crossing the highway in front of a truck being drivin north by Lester Diedrich, about 30, Rt. 1, Kaukauna. The boy was dragged 83 feet by the light truck which was hauling a trailer loaded with pigs.

    Besides the parents the accident victum is survived by seven brothers and sisters, Jerome, Richard, Ursula, Lillian, Joan, Dolores, and Rita.

    Funeral services will be held at 9 o'clock Friday morning at St. John Church, Little Chute with the Rev. J.J. Sprangers in charge. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

    Willard J. "Bill" Garvey, of Clearwater, FL (winter resident of Neenah, WI), age 81, died Sunday, January 9, 2005 at Mease Hospital in Dunedin, FL. He was born in Oneida Township, WI. Mr. Garvey was founder of Garv-Aire, Inc., throughout the Fox Valley.

    He was a member of St. Mary's Parish in Appleton, WI. Bill was an avid golfer and enjoyed participating in various sports.

    Survivors include his wife, Rosemary of 62 years four sons: Dennis, Appleton, WI Tim, Mendota Hts. (St. Paul), MN Patrick, Appleton, WI William, Racine, WI two brothers: Michael, Freedom, WI Robert "Buzz", Freedom, WI seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

    He graduated from Appleton West High School. After completing an apprenticeship, Dick earned a Journeyman Machinist certification and worked at that skilled trade for the remainder of his life - most recently for Eagle Supply & Plastics of Appleton.

    On March 1, 1990, Dick married Vicky Smyrneos, the love of his life. They were happily married for 24 years.

    Survivors include his wife Vicky, his brother John (Laura) Ruppel and sister Kathy (Steve) Johnson, sister-in-law Kay (Phil) Mannebach, sister-in-law Cindy (Wade) Manteuffel, aunts, uncles, cousins, and a wide circle of friends. All will miss Dick's infectious energy and mischievous sense of humor.

    Dick enjoyed fishing, hunting, riding his Harley and making his home and yard a showpiece. He took great delight in amusing his many nieces and nephews as well as their children. Whether it was frolicking in the pool or presenting his gala 4th of July display, he went at it with total enthusiasm. Dick also enjoyed spending time with his fishing and hunting sidekick for the past dozen years, his nephew Travis Mannebach.

    Dick was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, E. William (Bill) Ruppel, and a sister, Jane Ruppel. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 am on March 8, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 312 S State St., Appleton. In lieu of flowers, the family will establish a memorial.

    The family thanks the medical professionals at Theda Clark for the outstanding care provided to Dick and for the compassion shown to him and to the family members.

Jerry was born on June 17, 1917 in Freedom, WI to the late George and Josephine Randerson. Jerry married Helen Crowe in 1942 and she passed away in 1972. On August 1, 1985 he married Bernice Ulman at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. A salesman his whole life he worked in the soft drink and clothing industries until retiring in 1987. In 1959 he founded the Appleton ‘Serra Club’ International, which is an organization of Catholic lay men who help promote vocations to priesthood. He was also a devoted member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and member of Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of and past president of the Appleton Jaycees. Upon retiring he and Bernice enjoyed traveling during winters to Hawaii and Florida. He enjoyed spending summers with family and friends at his cottage on Boundary Lake. He was also an avid trout fisherman, deer hunter and gardener. Jerry was a 50 year season ticket holder and devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers.

    Survivors include his wife, Bernice; children: Gerald (Linda) Randerson, Appleton, Sharon (Tom) Wennerman, Appleton, Robert Randerson, Appleton, James Randerson, Appleton, Mary Bungert, Greenville, 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sister, Eileen (Norbert) Van Wychen, Kaukauna; sister-in-law, Margie Randerson; step-children, Judy (Gene) Pittz, Clifford (Dee) Ulman, Dennis (Betty) Ulman and Louis (Pat) Ulman; 6 step-grandchildren and 10 great step-grandchildren; further survived by many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

    Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Helen; brothers: Melvin, Eugene and Patrick and his sister, Lucille.

    A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at 11:00 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (1810 N. McDonald St.) Appleton with Father Gerald R. Falk officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday evening from 4 until 7 PM with a 7:00 prayer service all at the funeral home. On Thursday morning there will also be visitation from 9:30 AM until the time of service. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Appleton. A memorial fund is being established.
