    Smits, William C.


    William C. Smits, Sr., 92, of De Pere, died Tuesday morning, June 19, 2007, at a local nursing home. Bill was born December 7, 1914, in Green Bay and was the son of the late John and Mary (Van Boxtel) Smits. On September 3, 1938, he married Betty Friebel at St. Mary's Catholic Church. She preceded him in death on May 23, 1971. He then married Marie Van Gheem on March 1, 1973. Bill retired from Paper Converting in May of 1977, after thirty seven years of service. Bill was one of the founders of De Pere Little League and coached for many years. Bill was elected Man of the Year in 1970, and was a volunteer for the Concerned Hearts Club. He was a member of Catholic Order of Foresters, Whirl-A-Way Square Dancers, served on De Pere Park Board, long-time Past President of St. Boniface Ushers Club, and a member of the YMCA Retired Men's Club. Bill was an avid golfer and bowler to the end. In fact, his fellow Keglers nicknamed him "the Grinder."


    Survivors include his wife, Marie, two daughters, Jean Ann (Richard) Faltynski, Appleton, Mary Ann (Jerry) Willems, De Pere, one son, William, Jr. (Sandy) Smits , Green Bay, stepchildren, Jan Fox, Green Bay, Gary (Ann) Van Gheem, Arizona, Mary (Jim) Prescot, California, eight grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Marge Smits, Green Bay, numerous nieces and nephews.


    Bill was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty, in 1971, three brothers, Al, Bernard, and John, and three sisters, Marge, Marie, and Gertrude.


    Friends may call at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 305 North Tenth Street, De Pere, from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2007. Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue after 9:00 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until the procession leaves for church. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Suburban Drive at Lourdes Avenue, De Pere. Burial in Mt. Olivet Cemetery. John was a very loving and devoted husband and father and was always there to help someone in need. John was married to Barb Gloudemans on September 11, 1976 and they shared 34 wonderful years together. He graduated from Fox Valley Technical College in 1972 and currently worked for Metso Paper as a machinist for 38 years. John was an avid hunter and fisherman. His passion was the education and mentoring of youths shown through his various volunteer activities. He was a lead instructor for Hunters Education for over 10 years, was a member of the NRA and Twin City Rod and Gun Club. John volunteered at the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts as a den leader. For 15 years John passionately dedicated himself as chair person for the Boy Scouts counsel event, Mom and Son, where he worked as head ranger. John was also one of the consultants for the start of the Dad and Lad Event. John was a hall monitor for the Inter Parish Religious Education Program for several years.

    John will be sadly missed by his loving wife, Barb Babino, of Appleton; sons: Joseph Babino and William Babino, both of Appleton; brother, Fred (Dana) Babino of Appleton; sister, Barb (Dennis) Ashton of Appleton; nieces: Dawn, Marcia; nephew, Greg, and special friends, Frank O., Roy A. and Barb Z.

    John was preceded in death by his parents, John Babino Sr., and Margaret (Hoffmann) Babino, and brother, Michael Babino.

    The Funeral Service for John will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, October 27, 2010 at the WICHMANN FUNERAL HOME, with Fr. David J. Funk, OFM Cap. officiating. Friends will be received at the funeral home from 4 p.m. until the time of service. The visitation will also resume after the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund for John has been established.

    John (dad) you were a very loving, caring and very hard working father and husband. John you were the love of my life, my soulmate, my very best friend and we all love you and miss you very much. We will always remember you fondly and you will always hold a very special place in our hearts. Love, Barb, Joe and Billy.
