  • Occupation: He was a Stone cutter, Mason.
  • Note: Jerome Le Royer de la Dauversiere formed a company in Paris to establish a colony on the island of Montreal. In 1641, the company sent a small Roman Catholic missionary group to the island. The group was led by Paul de Chomedey, Sieur de Maisonneuve. Augustin left La Rochelle, France on 9 May 1641 on one of two ships. The ship he was on carried 24 others including a priest. The other ship carried 12 men, one Jesuit priest, and one nurse. The crossing took three months. Augustin?s ship encountered bad weather and arrived at Tadoussac on 20 Sep 1641, about 300 miles down stream from their destination (Montreal). The colonist built a fort at what is now Palace Royal in Old Montreal and established the settlement of Villemarie.

He received a land grant of 40 arpents (close to 40 acres), in what is now Montreal , to clear and plot the land. Augustin?s interests were not in the land but in the black market of the fur trade, and the land never got cleared by him. The corners of the land grant are identified today by historical markers in the old section of Montreal.

The French had established good relations with the Algonquins and the Hurons, but the Iroquois did not like either tribe and resented the fur trading enterprise between them and the French. The Iroquois repeatedly attacked Villemarie and the fort inflicting casualties until the colony was reduced to 50 or so inhabitants by 1651, forcing Maisonneuve to sail to France to bring back Reinforcements. It was two years before he was able to return with 95 men on 16 Nov 1653 to bolster the settlement. Twenty four of these men were destined to be killed by the Iroquois.

Augustin was killed in Nov 1653, by the Iroquois, the same month the reinforcements arrived. Whether he was captured or killed outright is unknown. Another source states that he left the confines of Villemarie (Montreal) and went into the wilderness from which he never returned. Having never returned, a year later his wife requested that the church declare him dead so she could remarry.
