Joe was born in Kimberly, Wisconsin, on April 12, 1923, son of the late Antone and Anna (Van Schyndel) Van Bommel. He married Lois Ackman on May 19, 1945. During World War II, at age 19, Joe piloted 132 missions over the Himalayas while serving in the Air Transport Command, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak-Leaf Cluster and the Air Medal. God saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around you and whispered, "Come to me." With tearful eyes we watched you suffer, and saw you pass away. And though we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.
