MADISON – Gary J. Van Ryzin, age 62, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 after a courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born on April 26, 1953 in Appleton, WI, son of the late Howard and Rosanne (Verbeten) Van Ryzin. He grew up in Appleton and graduated from Xavier High School in 1971. In 1975 he graduated from UW-Madison with a BS in Economics and Journalism, and married his hometown sweetheart, Pamela Casey. In 1976, he completed a MA-Journalism at UG-Athens and began his career at the National Roofing Contractors Association in Chicago. He continued his education part-time and completed his MBA and earned his CPA certification. In 1980 he and Pamela moved to Madison, where he worked in private industry as a financial executive while continuing his educational pursuits part-time at UW-Madison, earning a MS-Business and Doctor of Law. After years in the private sector (CUNA, Full Compass, Great Lakes Higher Education) he joined his beloved UW-Madison as a contract administrator in RSP, and spent the last 7 years as the Astronomy Department Administrator.
Gary’s interests were both broad and deep. Early on he developed passions for history, music, literature, and his pets, which stayed with him his whole life. An early interest in blues music led him to a college job as the music director for the UW student union where he produced shows starring his favorite artists, Howlin’ Wolf and BB King.

Gary took great joy in planning adventures for his family in Hawaii, where they took multiple trips and immersed themselves in the local culture. It was his favorite place in the world and the entire Van Ryzin family developed a special connection to the islands.

Gary’s greatest joy was his family. He took pride in raising 3 amazing children with his loving wife. He mentored and tutored them in all subjects, continually challenging them to do their best whether in athletic or scholastic endeavors. He felt most accomplished through his children’s success; his daughter an emergency medicine physician, and his two sons, one a banker in New York and the other a research scientist at NC State.

Gary is survived by his wife Pamela, of 40 years; children, Kimberly, Andrew (Amy), and Benjamin; brother, Wade (Chris); and many nieces, nephews and loving in-laws.

A Celebration of Gary’s Life will be held at Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Evjue Room, on Saturday, November 21, 2015, visitation from 1:30pm-4:30pm with a service at 2:30pm. Memorial Mass in Appleton to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund will be established. Special thanks to UW Hospital and Agrace Hospice.
  • Graduation: He graduated from Xavier High School, Appleton, in 1971.
