Robert W Ebben

M, b. January 24, 1889, d. May 2, 1976

Family: Dorothea Lucy Schilling (b. November 11, 1885, d. July 1, 1963)

Biography

  • Birth: Robert W Ebben was born on January 24, 1889 in Hollandtown, Brown Co, Wisconsin.
  • Marriage: He and Dorothea Lucy Schilling were married on October 1, 1912.
  • Death: Robert W Ebben died on May 2, 1976, at age 87.
  • Burial: He was buried in St Joseph Cemetery, Appleton, Outagamie Co, Wisconsin.
  • Note: Picture if you will the president of Appleton's First National Bank approaching an eager-eyed young office employee who had recently resigned from Kimberly Clark, and asking if that young man would like to help out at this bank while the regular help took vacation. Perhaps not so startling a story, but it does prove that Bank President Herman Erb was a discerning man, for that young clerk he offered the part time job to not only accepted the challenge, but wrote a bright success story in the bank's history.
It was obvious from his first association with the First National Bank that the young part time employee, Robert W. Ebben, had found his niche in life. Originally hired as messenger and clerk with the bank, he was elected Assistant Cashier in 1934 and in 1931 was elected cashier.
By 1947 Ebben was named vice-president and cashier and later director, and he still retains his connection with the bank, although officially retired in 1954. Robert was the only employee who ever was elected a vice-president and a member of the board of directors. Fifty years after being asked to fill in for vacationing employees, Ebben was honored for his half century of continuous service to the First National Bank, by being named to the Wisconsin Bankers Association Fifty-Year Club.
A resident of Appleton since 1896, Robert W. Ebben was born in the Town of Holland. While attending Appleton parochial and public schools, he actively participated in extra-curricular activities, most notably football and track. Perhaps his participation was a bit too exuberant, for injuries he sustained as a youth have remained to nag him in the later years.
High school athletic injuries notwithstanding, Ebben remained a dynamic aggressive man, and was active in associations outside the confines of the bank. One of the founders of the Zwicker Knitting Works, he served on its first Board of Directors after the knitting mill's 1919 incorporation. Zwicker Knitting Works not ranks as one of Appleton's more important industries, and availed itself of Ebben's talents; when he retired from Zwickers, he held the title of Vice-President. Other business dealings included being named Secretary and Director of the Western Elevator Company in 1941; Director of the Appleton Chamber of Commerce for six years and President of the Kimberly State Bank from 1938 to 1954, also serving as financial advisor to that organization.
A fifty-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Robert Ebben attends Mass at St. Josephs Catholic Church. A member of the Appleton Elks Club, for some years he was a member of the local Lions Club and served as Commander of the Appleton Yacht Club.
Married on October 1, 1912 to Dorothea Schilling of Grand Chute, Mr. Ebben was the proud father of five children: Catherine, now Mrs. M. A. Buchanan; Mary M Ebben who owns the local travel agency bearing her name; and Robert R., Carleton E., and Alfred C. Ebben.
For a man who was asked to “help out” at the bank, back in 1910, Robert W. Ebben has proved that while a stroke of good luck might help in getting one's feet planted on the right path, it still takes drive and a keen intelligence to reach the top. When he started with the First National Bank, he found the assets listed at $3 million; now all these years later, the bank assets are over $66 million. . . making a success story for man and employer that could only be told in this country.
