  • Note: Jack Schommer, Freedom, age 85, entered eternal life on Sunday January 13, 2013 at St. Elizabeth Hospital with his family at his side. He was born in Little Chute on January 20, 1927 to the late John and Nellie (Hammen) Schommer. Jack served in the Navy as a Seaman First Class and was stationed in Hawaii. He married Mary "Mae" Geurts at St. Nicholas Parish on August 18, 1951. She preceded him in death on October 24, 2012. Together, they loved to travel, whether it was winter trips to California and Florida or trips abroad. Jack's faith played a large role in his life, praying the rosary with Mae daily. Jack retired from United Grocers in 1986. He was a member of St. Nicholas Parish. Jack loved to socialize with family and friends. He was a jokester and could be counted on for a one-liner for each occasion. Jack enjoyed bowling and playing cards, especially Sheephead. He was a member of the Freedom VFW Post 7692, the Knights of Columbus and the Freedom Volunteer Fire Department. Jack also enjoyed gardening, puttering around in the yard, feeding his birds and watching the Packers.

    Jack is survived by his children: Susan (Terry) Muenster, Seymour; Bill "Baldy" (special friend Sandi Ryan), Florence; Bob (Donna), Freedom; Rick (Cindy), Freedom; and Stacey, Stevens Point; grandchildren: Jason (Leah), Kristin and Cody (special friend Marsha) Muenster, Nicole, Craig, Eric, Brett, Adam and Alyssa Schommer; great grandchildren: Zachary, Jacob and Elliana Muenster; brothers and sisters-in-law: Ivo (Mary) Geurts, Eileen Weins, Ursie (Jerry) Zwiers and Joe (Shirley) and Rita Geurts. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

    In addition to his wife and parents, Jack was preceded in death by his grandchildren: Derrick and Annie Schommer; father and mother-in-law: Albert and Mary (Vandenberg) Geurts; sisters and brothers: Alice (Marvin) Murphy, Earl (Jackie), Robert (Sally) and Florence Schommer; and sister and brother-in-law: Marge (Joe) Rosenberg and John Geurts.

    Visitation will be held Wednesday January 16, 2013 at O'CONNELL FUNERAL HOME (1776 E. Main Little Chute) beginning at 4:00 p.m. until time of Vigil service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday January 17, 2013 at ST. NICHOLAS PARISH (W2037 County Road S Freedom) beginning at 11:00 a.m. until time of Mass at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Daniel Felton will officiate.     Thompson, Frances Frances Thompson, 86, passed away March 5, 2007, at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center, California. Fran was born March 13, 1920, in Freedom to the late Leo and Adrianna Schommer and had resided in Canyon Lake, California, since 1976. Prior to that, she lived in Huntington Beach, CA., where she raised her children. She worked as a waitress for over 50 years. She loved bowling, poker, gardening and her grandchildren.

    Fran is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Tom Thompson of Canyon Lake, CA; her daughters and sons-in-law: Judi (Darryl) Hymel of Friendswood, TX, and Kathy (Pete Andersen) Thompson of Canyon Lake, CA; brother, Ray Schommer of Darboy; sisters: Betty Coppus of Little Chute and Anna Mae DeCoster of Freedom; sisters-in-law: Helen Schommer, Betty Schommer and Marcy Seidl; grandsons: David, Grant, Scott and Chad; and great-grandchildren: Nathan, Trent and Ava.

    She was preceded in death by her daughter, Judy Van Buren; her grandson, Craig Wagester; brothers: Merle, John and Leo Jr.; sisters: Glady Anschutz, Hazel and Eleen Schommer; and brothers-in-law: Henry Anschutz, Charles Coppus and Mark DeCoster.

    A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, March 9, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Rome Catholic Church in Wildemar, CA. Graveside services followed at Elsinore Valley Cemetery.

    Fran had the spirit of an 18-year-old and a heart of gold.

  • Note: John “Junior” Wirth, age 84, of Kimberly, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on June 25, 1932, in Isaar, son of the late John and Ann (Sanderfoot) Wirth. Junior proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at the Combined Locks paper mill for over 40 years before his retirement.

    Junior was an avid fisherman, a big Wisconsin sports fan, and a polka music enthusiast. He enjoyed playing cribbage and sheepshead with his friends at Kamps Bar. Most of all, Junior enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending their activities.

    Junior is survived by his children: Shelley (Bob) Jaehnke, Joe Wirth and Becky (Andrew) McDicken; grandchildren: Justin Jaehnke, Jennifer (fiance, Kyle) Jaehnke, John Wirth, Charlie Wirth, Suzie Wirth, Cole McDicken and Katy McDicken; a sister, Joann Jansen; a step-sister, Sylvia Bird; a brother-in-law, Leo Vandenberg; many other family members, friends and fishing buddies, especially Dick.

    Junior was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Lorenzo Schommer, Orville (Mary) Schommer, Elizabeth (Bud) Pennings, Marie Schommer, Betty (John) Keller, Marion Vandenberg, Bill (LeaAnn) DeGoey, Angie (Gene) Van Der Steen, Ellie (Don) Vandenberg and Carol (Bob) Burmester; brothers-in-law: Bill Jansen and Bob Bird.

    Memorial services will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 13, 2017, at the Verkuilen-Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home, 101 Canal Street, Little Chute. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the service. Full military honors will be performed after the service by the American Legion Post #258, Little Chute. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.

    The Wirth family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Theda Care at Home Hospice, the staff at Caroline Assisted Living, especially CeCe and Miss Kathy, and to Dr. Shannon Schmidt and her staff at Theda Care Oncology for all of their wonderful care and compassion.

  • Note: Raymond J. Schommer, Combined Locks, age 87, died Thursday October 29, 2015 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King, surrounded by his family. He was born in Freedom on May 25, 1928 to the late Leo and Jennie (Arnoldussen) Schommer. Ray served in the Army from 1949-1951 during the Korean War. He married Betty Scheller on May 10, 1958 at St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom. She preceded him in death on January 4, 2012 after 53 years of marriage. Ray was an active member of St. Paul Parish. He was also a member of the Jacob Coppus American Legion Post 258 and the Freedom V.F.W. Post 7692 and was a past commander of both organizations. In June of 2015, he was humbled and honored to visit Washington DC as part of the Wisconsin Old Glory Honor Flight.

    Ray's hobbies included throwing horseshoes, bowling and playing cards. He also enjoyed camping and fishing. Ray never turned down a bowl of ice cream.

    Raymond is survived by his children: Debora (Randy) Markusen, Mountain; Tim (Carla) Schommer, Combined Locks; Carol Schommer, Kaukauna; Eileen (Scott) Buss, Appleton; Julie (Bob) Wyngaard, Kimberly; and James (Tracy) Schommer, Kimberly; grandchildren: Jesse (Mandy) and Wesley Markusen, Kim (Justin) Ringler, Luke Wyngaard, Marlee and Sydney Buss, Reece and Phin Schommer; great grandchildren: Khaleesi and Quinten Markusen, Lane and Nolan Ringler; sister: Anna DeCoster; and sisters-in-law: Helen Schommer, Gloria (Bill) Hughes, Janice Gerlach, Mary Lou (Norman) Wilkens and Pearl Scheller. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends,

  • Note: Betty J. Schommer, 80, Combined Locks, died Wednesday January 4, 2012 at Colony Oaks Care Center. She was born in Van Dyne on May 17, 1931 to the late Walter and Esther (Matulle) Scheller. Betty married Raymond J. Schommer on May 10, 1958 at St. Nicholas Parish in Freedom. She volunteered at the Community Blood Center and belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary Post 7692. Betty enjoyed bowling and gardening. She also had fun playing horseshoes very poorly! Betty was a nurse at Kaukauna Community Hospital. She treasured her children and grandchildren and were very proud of them. Betty enjoyed time spent with family and friends.

    Survivors include her husband, Alvin 'Bud'; one brother, John Wirth, Combined Locks; a sister, Joanne Jansen, Kaukauna; a special nephew, Mike Jansen, Kaukauna; six step sisters, Betty Keller, Manitowoc; Mrs. Leo [Marion] Vandenberg, Appleton; Mrs. Robert [Sylvia] Bird, California; Mrs. Eugene [Angie] Vandersteen, Kaukauna; Mrs. Donald [Eleanor] Vandenberg, Freedom; Carol Burmester, Greenfild; a step brother, Bill De Goey, Combined; a sister in-law, Mary Schommer, Kaukauna.

    She was preceded in death by her father, two brothers and one sister.

    The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 1985 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Combined with the Rev. Robert Vandenberg officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the Verkuilen Funeral Home from 4 -9 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. until the time of services. Prayers services at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

    Age 73, died at 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 6, 1995. He was born March 1, 1922 in Phlox, Wisconsin, the son of the late William and Bertha [Knorr] Pennings. Bud had worked at Appleton Papers Lox Mill for 36 years from February 5th 1948 to March 1, 1984. He enjoyed his cottage of Lake Poygan and also enjoyed hunting and fishing and his dog, Muffin. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church and the American Legion Post 258, Little Chute. He had served in the Army Air Corps in England for 3 1/2 years during World War II.

    Survivors include a brother, Clarence Pennings, Kimberly; four sisters, Helen [Clair] Dutkievic, Combined Locks; Beatrice Watry, Little Chute; Evelyn [Julius Schmidt, Sherwood; Lila [Norbert] Delrow, Kaukauna; a special nephew, Michael [Mary] Jansen, Kaukauna; a special niece, Adele [Gerald] Stein, Little Chute; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

    He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth [Schommer] Pennings; and his second wife, Donna [Renier] Pennings; his step mother, Margaret [Hietpas] Pennings; sister, Marie Pennings; two brother in-laws, Harvey Kobussen and Giles Watry; a sister in-law, Eunice Pennings.

    Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 1985 from St. Paul Catholic Church, Combined Locks, with the Rev. Robert Vandenberg officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. Saturday until the time of service. There will be military rites following the services.
