    A Visit With A Retiree
Simon Roovers, who retired in 1945 at the age of 69, still resides in his home of 50 years at 121 E. First st., Kimberly.
Simon was born in Chaam, Holland, June 2, 1876. After attending grade school for six years, he went to work for his folks on their small farm until they died. He then worked in a grain and flour mill until he was 29.
The Norbertine Fathers, who then had their headquarters in Holland, advertised for men to cane to America to work in the logging camps in Northland, Mich. Simon, along with six of his friends, signed up. When they arrived in Michigan, they were put to work for $25 a month. However, they only worked three days because the camp was infested with bedbugs, and the lumberjacks drank too much to suit them.
Simon then contacted a man from Amsterdam who was living in Michigan. This man arranged employment near Kenosha for Simon and the other six on a horse ranch, owned by the Schlitz Brewery. After six or seven months there, they moved to Montana at the urging of an advertising agent who was looking for people to settle out west; the enticement -land for $50 an acre.
Each bought 40 acres. The land had to be irrigated, and the work was tough. To keep the men there, the land company provided them with the necessary equipment to work the land. This had to be paid for in two years. The men worked there the two years, but found themselves
getting deeper and deeper in debt. Finally, they devised a plan to rid themselves of this burden-harvest the crops and take off. They did!
Simon went back to Holl and in 1909 for a two-month visit. Upon his return to America, he came to Kimberly to settle. He began work for Kimberly-Clark Corporation as a laborer in the woodyard, carrying 40-inch logs from boxcars
to the woodpiles. His career included four years in the woodroom, a year on the roustabouts, and 12 years with the paper handlers. The advent of tractors in the mill reduced the need for so many paper handlers so Simon transferred to the beater room, where he remained un til he retired. Simon worked till he was 69 because of the shortage of labor during World War II, but when the boys returned
from service he finally was able to retire.
In 1912 Simon had taken time for another visit to Holland. While there he met Cornelia Van Hest, who soon became his wife. Simon and Cornelia were married one morning, and aboard ship that evening headed for America. They spent their honeymoon on the high seas. Their first home was on James Street, rented from Kimberly-Clark.
Simon and his wife were blessed with six children, three of them presently employed at the Kimberly Mill. George works on the cutters,
Pete is a pipe fitter and Johanna works on the sorting floor. Of the others, Catherine lives in Appleton, Marie in New York and Louise lives at home with her father. Mrs. Roovers passed away in 1952.
Simon's time is used well. He spends much of it gardening and tending his flowers. Now that cold weather is here, he is making tip-ups for ice fishing on Shawano Lake near his son's cottage this winter.
Of Kimberly-Clark, Simon says it's a good place to work-good wages and benefits-and he always told his children the same thing. He stated that Kimberly-Clark gave him much assistance when he first came to Kimberly.
Yes, Simon Roovers is a very contented and active Life Member at his spry 86 years of age.
