  • Note: Bernice Joyce Simon-Lopas was my great grandmother. She was born on December 29, 1921 in Niagara, Wisconsin. Her parents were Paul Simon and Anna Roeder Simon. Their last name used to be Simone, but her dad Paul changed their last name during his life because Simon was easier to pronounce. Her dad used to be a cooper. A cooper is someone who makes and repairs casks and barrels. He also used to be a watchman at a paper mill.
Bernice had two sisters and one brother. Her family moved a lot when she was growing up. She moved nine times in eleven years when she was a kid. Bernice and her brother and sisters went to many different schools while growing up.
Bernice got married to Lester Walter Lopas when she was nineteen years old. Her wedding date was April 19, 1941. Lester and Bernice had three children. Their children's names were Lester, Kenneth, and Darlene Lopas. Their child Lester died as a baby when he was 4 days old. Their child Kenneth is my grandpa on my mother's side.
My great grandma Bernice worked at Prange's. Prange's was a department store in Wisconsin several years ago. She worked in ticketing. She lived most of her life in Kaukauna, Wisconsin. She raised her children in Kaukauna, and that is where my Grandpa Ken went to school.
Bernice was a very outspoken person. She was also very funny. She loved to tease people and give them a hard time in a joking way. I remember visiting her at a nursing home and I thought she was very funny for an old person. She always made me laugh, and always gave me candy bars. I liked to visit her.
Her favorite game that she liked to play was Canasta. She also LOVED anything to do with crafts. She loved knitting, crocheting, macramé, sewing, hooking rugs, ceramics, reupholstering furniture, and making Christmas ornaments. Even when she was in the nursing home, she always made a teepee out of her napkin when she was done eating. She was very creative and talented. She also did a lot of volunteer work for her church, and it was called Ladies Aid.
Bernice loved dogs. She had two dogs as pets. They were both white with long hair. The one thing she hated was worms. She was afraid of them.
Bernice Lopas died on July 13, 2008 in Appleton, Wisconsin. She was at Rennes Health Center and she died peacefully in her sleep.
